Felix didn't worry when the lights went out, it not being his first experience with a power outage. I didn't worry about the food not being heated, with the meal still being good it wasn't much to worry about. Not even the strange lights coming from the window troubled him.
"Wait, green lights?" I couldn't remember seeing that before. Moving from the kitchen to the bedroom, to bypass the mess in the living room, I took a closer look. The lights outside being dark confirm the theory of an outage happening but looking further one can see that more than the immediate area have lost power. That doesn't explain where the strange lights came from though but looking up gave the answer to that question.
Up in the sky, one could see the Aurora showing off with all of its beautiful colors. The green was easily visible but one could also spot yellow, blue and red mixed in. There were even some colors he didn't know it could have with orange and pink being the most eye-catching ones. And if one looked beyond it you could see the stars in all their glory. The sight took my breath away and made me forget about all about my problems.
Watching the lights I came to the realization that I should film this or at least take a picture with how rare something like this. Until a new problem popped up. The phone not turning on no matter what buttons he pressed.
I gave up and hoped that someone else would be able to record this when the sound of a gun came from the streets below. The sound came as a surprise mostly because it sounded like the old gunpowder version. Why would someone use old models like that in the city? The police wouldn't use lethal guns unless there was a crisis and even criminals knew to use guns that wouldn't instantly signal to everyone where you are.
Further up the street, one could see flashes of light followed by gunshots. One could just about see three people shooting at something out there. Two of them went further back and looked to be fiddling with their weapons, probably reloading, when a scream sounded out and was silenced shortly after. The screamer looking to be the third one who kept shooting. I squinted my eyes at that, when did that happen, I looked away only for a second. The three people were now two and looked to be running instead of continuing to shoot at whatever took the third one.
The smart thing would be to move away from the window and see if there was someone who had a phone that could call for help, but my body wouldn't respond. My eyes moved away from the people who were still running and up to where the third one was taken.
Over there I could see a glowing light that seemed to be aimed towards me. My first thought was that it was probably looking for the two that ran away, that was when as if sensing that someone was looking at it, aimed the light straight towards me. I stood there petrified out of fear, will whatever that abducted the third one come for me next or was I just seeing things? The light concentrating in my direction answered that question.
The only good thing from that was that it broke me out of my paralysis and I could finally move again. Racing out of the apartment and into the hallway, I had to come up with a plan.
Going outside wouldn't help with whatever being out there is strong enough to scare three armed men. He couldn't call the police with his phone out of power but he can use someone else. It had to be someone that was actually awake and the gunshots wouldn't wake anyone up unless they slept with the window open as he did. Most bedrooms being soundproofed really worked against him right now.
There was only two he knew of that would probably up right now. One lived on the other side of the complex though so I would have to for the one that lives two floors down. The unfortunate part was that the hallway was only lit by the emergency lights so there were only weak lights illuminating my path. Running down the stairs I tried to think of what I was supposed to say when he got there. 'Help me, there were three people outside and the third one disappeared or someone pointed a light at me and that scared me.'
The time to think about this probably wasn't when I was running down a dark staircase, going more by memory than sight, with one step too long lead to me tripping on the steps.
The fall was mercifully short with me only a falling a few steps. Standing up, a bit sore but no lasting damage, I took the next floor much more carefully.
Reaching the second floor, with no more accidents, I had to find where the apartment was. Walking past the doors I realized a problem, the lights were strong enough to navigate, but not for reading nameplates. I hoped that my memory was strong enough from the few times I visited to find the place. I only tripped four more times, on shoes and garbage that were left in the hallway, before I found the correct door. I started knocking the door with my voice joining in to get my neighbors attention.
"Tokugawa, are you awake?" I yelled repeatedly.
An answer didn't take long before Tokugawa opened it with a candle in his hand, clearly showing the huge smile he had. The smile and his cheerful demeanor confused me with how out of place it was, letting Tokugawa have the initiative of the conversation.
"Oh, Akello is that you?" Tokugawa questioned.
"Yes, I really nee-" was as far I got before Tokugawa took over the conversation as soon as he heard me say yes.
"Come in, come in and remember to take off your shoes now. We can arrange a seat for one more and it wou-" he continued until he was interrupted by a voice coming from further in, making him turn around.
I couldn't understand much of what was being said with him reverting to his native Taiko to answer what sounded like a question. With his cheerful demeanor turned away from me, I was able to gather myself and say what I needed to.
"I need your help!" I could have worded it better but it was enough for him to turn back and wait for me to continue.
I didn't really know what to say first but I just went with telling the short version. He took a moment to digest the story before he talked.
"If I understand this correctly, you heard the sound of guns being shot and saw three people shooting at something. The three eventually became two, you don't know how and they started running after the third one disappeared ." he looked at me with a questioning frown. "Then a light came and started pointing at you. The action making you believe that it would be coming for." he finished.
"Yes, it sounds weird when you put it like that but I don't know what to do and I was hoping you could he-" I said before he was the one that interrupted me. I'm starting to sense a pattern.
"Say no more Akello," he said.."I will go and fetch my swords."
"What?" Being all I got out before he closed the door and left me in the hallway.
Maybe I should have gone for the one on the other side?
