Things were going pretty well for Humanity. The Human species was becoming more advanced, peaceful and prosperous for every decade that went by. There were even plans being made to colonize the entire solar system within a generation We thought nothing could stop us at this point, with so many of our problems solved and ways to deal with problems that might pop up in the future. Of course, life isn't so nice to give us a problem we know how to deal with or even give us a chance to plan.  The only action one can really take when multiple alien species invade your planet from glowing portals from nowhere, is the one thing we have done since our ancestors decided to climb down the trees and start walking on two legs.
