Atonement of an Immortal
Prologue: Regret

Prologue: Regret

Pain... terrible pain was all Michael felt. This was not the pain of the body. No, it was the pain coming from his very being, the pain in his soul. When the devils finally captured the child of plane, they decided to break his immortal soul and turn him into an immortal puppet. Thus, they engraved the most terrible pain in Michael's very soul. This was a terrifying torture method that the devils only used on the most heinous of criminals in their own society. In their records, this method had broken the souls of countless vile criminals and war prisoners.

But... Michael's soul was a genuine immortal soul containing immortal energy. Thus, it did not break for a long time. Even when it cracked, it healed by the virtue of its immortality. For Michael, the pain was enough to make him crazy. But even while his personality broke and he descended into madness, the pain never stopped. Initially, Michael struggled. After all, he was the child of the plane, some one destined for greatness and used to being a powerhouse. While he had never done anything to earn his own power, never cultivated, never tried to become stronger and his great destiny could be said to be the result of heaven defying luck, he did not view it as such. According to Michael, the power was his by birth. He believed himself to be superior than others. Thus, when he was captured and tortured, the first emotion he felt was anger. Boundless wrath clouded his mind as we swore to rip apart the devils. But, as time passed, the anger gave way to frustration. He grew frustrated at his own powerlessness. This further led him to blaming other people and even the plane for not protecting him. By the end, all his emotions finally gave way to despair.

While there was no source of hope in this situation, Michael still hoped. He endured hoping to one day escape his prison, endured with all his power and will, endured for a very, very long time. His personality devolved into madness but he still kept on to his hope. But, ultimately his hope to live turned into a wish for release.  In the meantime, Michael kept on thinking about his life. He remembered his mortal parents who he rejected as he believed himself to be a chosen. He remembered all other mortals he treated as dirt. Now that his immortality had become his curse, he felt for the first time that being a mortal would not be so bad. As the pain washed the arrogance from his being, he realized his flaws and felt an emotion for the first time - regret the regret for not cherishing people who were close to him and loved him, the regret for valuing wrong things in life and the regret for not trying his best.

It was then that an Ancient Being spoke to him:

> Give me your immortal energy and I shall grant you a wish.

For Michael who had lost all hope, there was no other choice. He decided to sacrifice his immortality, his arrogance and conceit. He established his resolve to try his best. This was a transformation form the very core of his personality, something that would alter the fate of entire universe in future. But, at that point neither he nor the ancient one knew this. Michael asked:

> I want a second chance.

>

> The request shall be granted.
