Chapter 1

So this is chapter one.

The plan is to knock out the first couple chapters on earth because I kinda want to get some history and events told.

I want to start writing the more important parts before chapter 5 but this is my first attempt at really writing

so pacing and all of the literary stuff is going to be horrible. Hopefully that improves over time.

This chapter takes place a century after the introduction. I want to build the world out a little. The goal of the next chapter is probably going to be to probably going to have the changes of the modern world after magic was incorporated into it.

Also, I don't know how length of chapters should play out. Sometimes i feel like i might be rambling, other times i feel like i'm not writing enough. Iunno if people are even gonna read it. lol it's k.

Chapter 1

My name is Jacob Castor and I grew up in an orphanage but now that I’ve turned 18, I have a couple options available to me. I could join the army. That right now is a really likely option for someone like me with not a penny to my name. I could try for scholarships for some private college. I’m not dumb so that could also work. I could just give up and work in the fast food industry for the rest of my life, maybe end up becoming a manager at some restaurant or even a regional manager. That sounds like the dream. I mean, I’d probably off myself before I become a regional manager but it’s always nice to have goals before the offing comes.

None of those options are really appealing to me. See, what I’ve always wanted to do was to attend the Academy. See, the Academy is an institution dedicated in the pursuit of magic. No, I’m not talking about the pop cultural teenage heartthrob magic school but the dark gritty magic. Students from the Academy de Magicae would come to the orphanage every so often and play with the children, showing them their tricks and feats of magic. See, my dream ever since I was a little kid has always been to discover some great and extraordinary form of magic. I’ve always envied the students that came by because there was an air of freedom around them like the chains that once held us, that still holds some of us, was never there. They could fly and embrace the skies while I was stuck in the orphanage waiting to be picked up. The trouble is that to enter the Academy, you have to pass a series of tests to gauge your potential but even if you pass, you’ll still need a sponsor to get in.

The last option is to enter the Tower. I was told stories about the Tower when I was little. A century ago, the Tower was discovered. A century ago, magic was discovered and people who could use it started appearing. Stories say that the headmasters of the Academy de Magicae were the first to be able to use magic and that they ventured into the tower along with a group of soldiers. Only they were able to return and each of them had brought into our world items unimaginable. It was said that a boy was able to bring back ore that conducted mana, crystals that could power cities and medicine that could heal any wound. No one really knows what’s on the inside of the tower but since the first expedition, people have willingly gone in to search for more of these treasures. Anyone could go. Vagabonds and thieves, people down on their luck, anyone. But not many returned and when they did, they recalled nothing about the Tower. The people with the lowest mortality rates have been the mages from the academy. Since the vetting process for potential students has been known to be tough, only the best end up being accepted and they are strong. Because they are strong, expeditions with mages from the Academy have been mostly successful but because the Academy sponsors those expeditions, they’re able to control most of the treasures that enter our world.

Tomorrow I leave the orphanage. I think I’m going to try and join the Academy. It’s going to be a long shot but I have to try. If worse comes to worse, I could always work fast food for the rest of my life. My short, short life if it comes to that.
