Chapter 12

Chapter 12

Aramis silently walked towards his large table and then sat on its chair. On it, he seemed to be deep in thought. Thinking it might take him a while to finish his current action, Artanis sat on a nearby chair. The room was then filled with nothing, but silence. Aside from the ticking of the antique clock hung at the wall.

This silence continued for a few minutes, only to suddenly be broken by Aramis, as he suddenly opens a drawer on his table taking off it a pile of papers. Next was a rather thin sheet of wood was taken off it as well, revealing a hidden compartment in the drawer, and from it he took a ring, a ring exactly equal to the one Artanis had received from Hywel, which he soon wore.

“Well, I suppose it’s within his rights to do so, I suppose you expect an explanation?” Aramis asked, looking at her, waiting for an answer.

“If you wouldn’t mind.” Of course, was her answer, in such situation, what kind of curious person such as herself would say no to such question? Hearing her answer he started to speak.

“The ring you now hold is a relic, or rather a copy of a relic. The owner of the original ring, was Andvari Gold. An ancient dwarven merchant, who life has ended ages ago. The relic is now kept by us, of the Andvari Clan.” He said, looking at his own ring. Artanis had to do her best to contain her happiness.

‘Lucky! To think I stumbled into something like that.’ She though, on the outside, she was doing her best to look surprised. Which she did, thanks to a few lessons given by her mother, Susana Ferreira had insisted that she did. Being an actress, she considered being to manipulate one’s expression a very useful skill to succeed at life, as often, expressing one’s true emotions could lead into problems.

“The Andvari, are a group of merchants and nobles. And the few, whom known about our existence, acknowledge us a one of the most influential, non-religious groups. As money is, as you may know, something very powerful.” That said, he took a small book, from the drawer’s hidden compartment. Having the book in his hand, left his chair, and walked towards Artanis.

“And now, you are one of us. The skill described on this book, is one of the many secrets of the Andvari. Read it, and memorize it well, for I will not be giving the book for you.” He said, handing her the rather thin and small book, which had gold plates as its cover.

"Thank you, it is an honor." She answered, as she had no reason to refuse.

“I see you’ve finished reading it.” Said Aramis, who took the book from her hands, and once again hid it, on his drawer, locking it soon after.

“Well, would you be so kind as to entertain me with a game?” He asked, smiling.

“Sure?” Artanis answered, wondering what kind of game he had planned, although the way he smiled gave her, she felt refusing to partake in it would be rather bad for her.

“Excellent, it’s somewhat similar to the test taken by aspiring merchants. That is, you will have to bring me some merchandise.” Said Aramis, who seemed curious about her skills, as Artanis had not told him that, her meeting with Hywel had only consisted in her carrying his products, and a rather short conversation. In his mind, she was an excellent trader that caught his master attention, and he wished to see just how good she was.

“Good luck.” Were his last words, before Artanis left the merchant’s guild house. Her quest, involved gathering rabbit leather, which according to Dario were increasing in price each passing day. The faster she was to buy it, the better.

She thought of equipping the mysterious gold ring, but she still could not identify it, so she gave up on doing so. Only a fool would use something he did not know how to use properly, and she was not a fool.

If you spot this narrative on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

“Sigh, here I go again…” Artanis mumbled, since the best place she knew to find possible sellers was the city square, since it were always full of players, from different levels and classes. And so she once again started her long trip towards it.

Leaving the guild a few hours before midnight she started walking in the direction of the city’s square, sometime during the trip a message window appeared informing her of a stat increase.

Strenght has permanently been increased by 1

‘So freaking heavy’ She complained, having walked for hour, in the direction of the city square, the endless stone road was familiar to her having walked on it so many times, and just like before the trip was tiring, even more with the heavy backpack she was carrying.

The sun started rising in the east, bathing the once dark city with its golden light, seeing it she decided to rest, taking off her backpack, she sat next to a stone house wall. And from inside the backpack she took her water canteen and started to drink out of it.

You have witnessed Rockheim’s Sunrise:

As if an art piece created by nature herself, Rockheim’s bathed by the Sun's golden light, become seemingly made of gold. This glorious view has inspired you.

Art has permanently been increased by 1

‘I never noticed the sunrise was so beautiful, maybe I should try to wake up earlier.’ Thought Artanis, surprised at the beautiful view before her. She lived on an incredibly beautiful country, full of natural beauties, but living on a metropolis, such things were not often seen. And during her vacations, like pretty much everyone else in her family, except her father, which often meditated in the morning. She were very fond of the beach, the Sun warmth felt great as she played on the beach, and often, as she sunbathed she were bothered by men.

Some were younger, some of her age, but the most frequent were older men, thanks to her well developed body, even when she were fifteen years old, she attracted their attention, often not believing her when she came off with her age. Eventually, they gave up and she could continue sunbathing in peace, at least for a while. But occasionally, they kept insisting she accompanied them in a date, some could not care less about her age, and very forceful in their attempts to convince her.

Thankfully, eventually her father came back from his jog, and seeing the huge man looking at them, their survival instinct kicked in, his size alone were enough to scare them, but the pissed off look he gave seeing his precious daughter bothered by man, which according to him, were much Bellow his daughter level. Was frightening, so, thanks to him. Many of them discovered how fast they could really run. How they dared to hit on his precious treasure? Such disgusting dogs should go back to wherever they had come from and stay there to die.

She had finished drinking all of her canteen’s contents she put her back into her backpack, deciding to inspect it, something she had yet to do.

“Such a great backpack, I suppose I should not complain about its weight.” She said to herself, as she got off the ground and wore it on her back, Having rested for a significant time, she were ready to continue the trip, it was just a few hours left of walking. She continued walking, until she finally arrived at the city’s square.

Strength has permanently increased by 1

Vitality has permanently increased by 1

The city’s square was as it always was, filled with many adventurers and merchants selling their wares. Walking into it was a beautiful elven maiden, her traveler garbs, drenched in sweat, caused all single man to stare, some tried to do so discretely. Among them were man accompanied by their significant ones, some having noticed their stares at the elf’s body, were quite angry. And although none voiced their complaints, by far from being safe from their anger, they were just holding back as there were too many witnesses.

Ignoring the stares, which she was already used to feel, although she did not like them, but there was nothing, she could do about it. Tired, she took of her backpack and sat on the same wooden bench she always had, wondering once again, why it was always empty. She decided she would ask Wystan, next time she see him. Holding her valuable backpack, afraid someone would take it from her, she started to yell.

“Buying Rabbit Leather, pay 20 copper!” She yelled, some of the passing adventures laughed, some called her a noob, but one of them was kind enough to enlighten her.

“You must be new, right? You see, right now most sell it for over 40 copper.” Said the kind man, who wore a simple white robe, seeming to be a priest, he were the stereotypical clergy, kind and compassionate, but that was not true, the only reason he acted as such, was because a priest could gain fame and faith from helping others. The real reason, he had become a cleric for, was so he could easily find groups. Being an opportunistic man, he never lost a chance to earn stats and fame. And so, he decided to help the elven maiden.

“But… I can eat twenty wolf meat kebabs with that!” Artanis said, surprised. One of the merchants in her guild, had told her that such kind of leather increased in price each passing day, but he had not said, it were already so expensive.

“Yes, it’s kind of absurd is it not?” Were the most sincere words he had said to her, he considered the fact, than rabbit leather cost so much was ridiculous. Thanks to that, low-level leather armor had become extremely expensive, most aspiring warriors ended managing buying iron chainmail before they had the chance to buy, even the most basic leather armor.

“Thank you sir, it’s good to know so.” She said, getting off the bench.

“No problem, good luck. And may Tyr bless you.” Said the cleric, who seemed to be praying, as he held his iron amulet, and mumbled a few words, leaving soon after.

‘Now what will I do?’ The leather’s price was so absurd, than with four silver coins she could only afford ten pieces of leather. With the same amount of money, she could buy four full means at Rock Soup. She started to hate the one-month restriction on leaving the city, it would be easier to hunt for the leather herself. But since she could not do so, she tried using what she had, that is her connections.

“Is there anyway someone could send me rabbit leather?” She asked in her guild chat, she knew there were no one close to her, but perhaps something like a mailing system existed, which could deliver it in a few days.

“Sure, but I think it would take nearly a week for it to arrive, if you’re lucky.” Answered Cheonjiwang, which were at forest, days away from horse.

“I see, sorry to bother you.” Artanis was disappointed as her first plan had failed, and decided to start her plan B, by offering the use her skills such as repair, polish and sharpening, she could perhaps trade her services, a piece of leather for each. As repairing a weapon could cost more than forty coppers, it were a good plan. And to implement it she got off the bench, heading towards Wystan’s shop.
