Chapter 37 - City of Licht 2

Milo's scanned across the Templar Headquarters' ornate halls as the kind receptionist led him, Xu Wei, and Alistair through dimly lit corridors. The muffled echo of their footsteps mingled with the hushed whispers of secrets long buried within these ancient walls. Milo couldn't help but marvel at the beauty surrounding them – tapestries depicting legendary battles hung alongside grand paintings, while gleaming weapons lay on display, each a testament to the power of the order.

"Watch your step," the receptionist cautioned as they ascended a narrow staircase. Milo's gaze lingered on a particularly intricate carving of a dragon intertwined with a phoenix.

"Thanks," he muttered, his thoughts consumed by the task ahead. Milo found solace in analyzing this environment, yet, the opulence of their surroundings left him uneasy, he'd never been surrounded by this much gold and treasure before.

The receptionist finally paused before an ornately carved door adorned with semi-precious stones. "Seraphina's private quarters," she announced, her voice barely above a whisper. "She is waiting for you inside."

"Thank you," Alistair said, offering her a grateful nod. She returned it and retreated down the hallway, leaving the trio to face whatever lay behind the door.

Alistair pushed open the door and the group walked into the large room. A wave of awe washed over Milo, momentarily drowning out his thoughts. Seraphina's quarters boasted an even more stunning collection of artifacts and tapestries than what they'd seen so far, speaking volumes about her status within the Templar order. A richly embroidered rug covered the floor, while shelves filled with ancient tomes lined the walls. Milo's gaze was drawn to an exquisite, crystal-encrusted sword mounted above her fireplace, its hilt gleaming with latent power.

Seraphina sat regally by her ornate desk. Her beauty was arresting, with luminous features that seemed to capture the very essence of light itself. Her raven-black hair cascaded like liquid night, a stark contrast to her alabaster skin, and her eyes, a brilliant shade of sapphire, sparkled with intelligence and determination. Every movement she made carried a graceful air, as if she were a dancer choreographing each step in a grand performance. Her presence commanded respect and attention, a testament to her unwavering dedication to the Order of Light and her tireless efforts to protect the City of Licht.

As she looked up from her desk, her eyes locked onto Alistair, and her face went ashen. She stumbled back in shock, gripping the edge of a polished wooden table for support.

"Yo-You're alive?" Seraphina choked out, her voice barely above a whisper.

Alistair hesitated for a moment before stepping forward, his shoulders squared and his expression a mix of relief and regret. "Yes, I am, Seraphina," he replied, his voice firm yet tinged with sorrow. "I never meant for you to think otherwise."

"Wow," Milo breathed, his curiosity piqued. He shifted his gaze to Alistair, who stood rigid, a storm of emotion seeming to be brewing behind his eyes. "How do you know Seraphina?" Milo asked, unable to suppress the question any longer.

Alistair hesitated, his jaw clenched as he wrestled with the truth. "We… we have a history," he finally admitted, his voice laden with regret.

Milo frowned at the vague answer but decided not to push further. Instead, he focused on examining every detail of the awe-striking room.

Xu Wei, ever the calm and disciplined presence, leaned against a bookcase, observing the exchange between Alistair and Milo.

Milo watched the exchange from the corner of his eye, the tension between the two palpable in the air. He studied Seraphina's reaction to Alistair's presence, noting the disbelief that clouded her features. What had happened between them to cause such a response?

"I thought you were dead, Alistair," Seraphina stammered, her eyes flickering between him and the other members of their party. "How is it possible that you survived? They destroyed your pe-" The woman paused and pressed her hands onto her mouth.

Alistair sighed, his gaze never leaving Seraphina's face. "It's a long story," he began, his voice laden with emotion. "But it involves a lot of luck on my side."

As Alistair's words hung in the air, Seraphina's expression shifted from disbelief to anger. Her hands clenched into fists at her side, and her eyes bore into Alistair with a fiery intensity that made Milo squirm uncomfortably.

"If you were alive this whole time, why didn't you come back?" she demanded, her voice trembling with suppressed fury. "I thought you were dead! No, I knew you were dead."

Alistair hesitated, swallowing hard before responding. "I wanted to keep you safe," he confessed, his own voice cracking beneath the weight of his emotions. "I knew that as long as I stayed away, the Alliance wouldn't target you."

"Please, Seraphina," Alistair pleaded, desperation seeping into his voice. "We need your help. The Alliance is getting closer to finally getting the power they have been searching for, and we must stop them before it's too late. I need to do right by my failures from the past, please, I beg you."

Seraphina scoffed, her eyes brimming with tears that threatened to spill down her cheeks. "Is that supposed to make me feel better? That you abandoned abandoned me – for my own good? Do you think I can not protect myself? That I need protecting in the first place?"

In that moment, Milo felt a sudden surge of empathy for both Alistair and Seraphina. He could understand the reasoning behind Alistair's actions, knowing all too well what it felt like to want to protect those you cared about. At the same time, he understood Seraphina's pain, the sense of betrayal that came from being left behind without explanation.

"Seraphina, I never meant to hurt you," Alistair whispered, his sincerity palpable. "But I couldn't bear the thought of you suffering because of me. If staying away was the only way to ensure your safety, then that was a sacrifice I was willing to make."

"Even if it meant losing everything that mattered to you?" Seraphina shot back, her voice catching in her throat.

"Especially then," Alistair replied, his voice barely audible.

Milo focused intently on Seraphina. Would she be willing to aid them in their quest, or would it prove too great an obstacle? As the seconds ticked by, Milo's heart raced, his anxiety fueled by the thought of the Alliance getting closer to them with every ticking second.

"Very well," Seraphina finally conceded, her voice wavering with uncertainty. "I will do what I can to help you."

"Thank you," Alistair breathed, relief flooding his features.

As the tension between Alistair and Seraphina hung like a thick fog in the air, Milo's gaze met Xu Wei's. The swordsman's dark eyes reflected unease, mirroring the uncertainty roiling within Milo himself.

Milo felt like an intruder, witnessing a painfully intimate moment between two people who had once shared something profound. It was obvious that their past was tangled and complex, and Milo wondered if he could ever truly grasp the depth of the emotions running through the room.

"Seraphina," Alistair said at last, his voice thick with emotion but resolute. "We can't change the past, but we must focus on the present. There's a far greater threat looming over us."

The urgency in Alistair's voice brought Milo back to the reality of their situation. They were not here for a reunion; they were here to save their world from the Alliance of Three and their sinister quest for the Crystal of Balance.

"Tell me," Seraphina demanded, her expression hardening as she switched gears, focusing on the matter at hand. She crossed her arms, waiting for Alistair to explain.

"Seraphina, the Alliance of Three is closing in on us," Alistair began. "They are getting greedier as time passes. Right now, we need to protect Milo here."

Alistair took a deep breath, his gaze locked with Seraphina's as he began to reveal the weighty truth. "Seraphina, I must confide in you. Milo possesses a unique and dangerous gift—Void Magic. It's the very reason the Alliance of Three is relentlessly pursuing him. They aim to steal this magic, and if they succeed, the entire continent will be plunged into peril."

Seraphina's eyes widened with concern as she absorbed the gravity of Alistair's words. "Void Magic? I've never heard of this. What does that have to do with anything?"

Alistair's expression darkened. "They seek power, Seraphina. They believe harnessing Void Magic will grant them unmatched abilities. But I know their true source of power. It wasn't the Arcana clan responsible for those dark acts. Instead, we were unjustly framed by the fearful trio of pyros, wesos, and hyphos. The Alliance, I am certain, is using dark magic to fuel their strength, and they put all the allegations onto our people to escape justice."

Seraphina's brows furrowed with a mix of concern and disbelief. "Are you saying that the Alliance's power isn't natural? That they're manipulating dark magic to achieve their goals?"

Alistair nodded solemnly. "Yes, precisely. They've deceived many, including the Templars, with their illusion of righteousness. But I know the truth, and we must stop them before their insatiable greed for power brings ruin to us all."

"Until Milo came into my life," Alistair continued, his gaze flicking towards the young man, "I had lost all hope. But now, I know we have a chance to prevent this catastrophe and avenge the Arcana clan."

Milo felt a warmth spreading through him, a sense of purpose and belonging that he hadn't felt in a long time. It was as if Alistair's faith in him had ignited a fire within his soul, one that burned with determination to stop the Alliance and restore balance to their world.

"Your faith in him is admirable," Seraphina said, her eyes darting between Milo and Alistair. "But how do you plan to stop them? What can we do?"

"We need your help," Alistair replied earnestly, his face wrought with the desperation that underscored each word. "We need to speak with High Priest Solarius, and I believe that together, we can figure out a way to find the Crystal of Balance and bring down the Alliance. This is the only way, without the crystal, we won't match against their dark arts."

The weight of Seraphina's silence hung in the air as she studied them, her commitment to help laced with unspoken conditions. Milo could see it in the way her eyes flickered from Alistair to Xu Wei, then finally to him, as if sizing up the gravity of their request. A hint of reluctance lingered in her gaze, and he knew there was more to her decision than simply arranging a meeting.

"Very well," Seraphina said at last, breaking the tense quiet. "But I must warn you that my influence can only go so far. The High Council is not easily swayed, especially when it comes to outsiders."

"Thank you, Seraphina," Alistair breathed, relief washing over his features.

As they left Seraphina's quarters, Milo couldn't help but feel a renewed sense of purpose.

The burden of their mission weighed heavily on Milo's shoulders, but he knew deep down that the future – and perhaps the fate of the entire realm – rested in their hands. It was a responsibility he would not take lightly.

"Martha!" Seraphina called out, her voice echoing through the hallowed halls of the Templar Headquarters. Moments later, the kind receptionist appeared, her eyes wide with curiosity.

"Please arrange temporary accommodations for our guests in the City of Licht," Seraphina instructed. "They'll be staying with us while we work out the details of their...request."

"Of course, Lady Seraphina," Martha replied, bowing her head respectfully before leading the trio away from Seraphina's private quarters.

As they followed Martha down the lavish corridors, Milo's thoughts raced, torn between relief and unease. Seraphina was willing to help, but what would her unspoken conditions entail? How far would they have to go to earn the trust of the Templar Order and the High Council?

"Is everything alright, Milo?" Xu Wei asked, her voice a gentle whisper beside him.

"Fine," Milo replied, forcing a smile. "Just thinking about what's ahead."

"Whatever it is, we'll face it together," Xu Wei said firmly, her words bolstering Milo's resolve.

"Thanks," he murmured, grateful for her unwavering support.

Trailing behind Alistair, the echoes of their footsteps mingled with the memories of his past, Milo couldn't shake the feeling that they were walking on a tightrope between hope and disaster. But there was no turning back now.

And as they stepped into the City of Licht, bathed in the glow of the setting sun, Milo knew that every ounce of courage and determination would be necessary to overcome the trials that lay ahead. For the fate of their world rested in their hands, and it was a responsibility they could not – and would not – take lightly.
