Chapter 33 - Escape

Alistair, Xu Wei, and Milo sprinted through stairs beneath the frozen lake, their breaths ragged and hearts pounding in sync with the echoes of their enemies' footsteps. They could practically feel the malice emanating from the Alliance of Three as they closed in on them.

"Almost there!" Alistair shouted, sweat dripping from his brow.

As they reached the sanctuary beneath the lake Alistair went to work immediately.

"Quickly," Alistair ordered, his hands weaving intricate patterns in the air. "Protective measures!"

A dozen rock golems rumbled to life, their stoic faces carved from the very earth beneath them. In an instant, the once silent chamber echoed with the sound of grinding stone as the golems lurched toward the entrance, ready to engage the Alliance of Three.

"Go, you two!" Alistair urged, his voice filled with determination. "Gather whatever you can! We must not allow these treasures to fall into the hands of our enemies."

"Got it," Milo replied, his nature kicking into gear as he assessed the items before him, quickly prioritizing which were worth taking.

"Be careful," Xu Wei added, his calm demeanor a stark contrast to the chaos unfolding around them. He moved with purpose, plucking scrolls and artifacts from their resting places with expert precision.

As Milo grabbed handfuls of ancient texts and gold-inlaid weapons, he couldn't help but wonder what secrets they harbored.

"Stay focused," Milo muttered under his breath, a silent mantra as he continued to gather what he could.

A sudden explosion rocked the chamber, dust and debris raining down upon them. The rock golems clashed against the Alliance's forces, their stone fists thundering against intruders with brutal force. The sounds of battle filled the air – grunts of pain, cries of anger, and the relentless grinding of stone against flesh and steel.

"Time's running out," Alistair called from across the room, his face etched with worry as he frantically stuffed more items into a worn leather bag.

Milo nodded, his heart pounding in his chest as adrenaline coursed through his veins. He glanced over at Xu Wei, who met his gaze with a resolute nod. They were in this together, and they would see it through to the end.

With each passing moment, the sanctuary seemed to tremble beneath the weight of the battle raging just beyond its walls. Milo's heart raced as the urgency of their situation bore down on him like a crushing weight. And yet, amid the chaos, he drew strength from his friends and the knowledge that together, they would prevail.

Milo's muscles tensed as he surveyed the chaos around him, the cacophony of battle echoing through the sanctuary. Alistair's voice cut through the din, his tone laced with urgency. "I can create a portal to get us out of here, but we need to destroy the sanctuary first. If the Alliance gets their hands on the knowledge stored within these walls, we'll be in even greater danger."

His heart raced, adrenaline pumping through his veins. The situation was dire, and they had to act fast. Xu Wei's determined gaze met Milo's, steeling his resolve.

"Understood," Milo called back, his voice steady despite the turmoil surrounding them. "Xu Wei and I will help hold them off while you prepare the portal."

Alistair nodded, his hands already weaving arcane symbols in the air as he began the intricate process of opening a portal. Milo and Xu Wei exchanged a glance before charging into the fray alongside the rock golems, their combined might a shield against the encroaching enemy forces.

As he fought, Milo's mind raced with strategies, each move calculated and executed with precision. He observed the enemy's weaknesses, their unguarded flanks and moments of hesitation, and he exploited them with ruthless efficiency. With a swift spin, he lunged at the nearest Alliance member, transforming into his jaguar form in a blur of feral grace.

The sharp crack of stone striking flesh filled the air as his claws found their mark, followed by grunts of pain and surprise from the Alliance members. Milo's void magic hummed with power, nullifying the counterattacks that came his way, leaving his adversaries bewildered and vulnerable. The battle became a dance of calculated aggression, and Milo was its relentless choreographer.

"Keep them at bay," Xu Wei shouted, his wind magic swirling around him like an ethereal cloak. "Alistair needs more time!"

Milo gritted his teeth, sweat dripping down his brow as he dodged, parried, and struck with lethal precision. His instincts guided him, honing his focus as he sought to give Alistair the time he needed. In the midst of the battle, he found solace in the present moment, relying on his senses to navigate the battlefield.

"Almost there!" Alistair cried, his voice strained as he continued to weave the portal's complex sigils. "Just a little longer!"

"Stay focused, Milo," Xu Wei urged, his voice barely audible over the sound of clashing steel and shattering rock.

"Right," Milo muttered under his breath, his heart pounding in his ears.

Milo leaped into the fray once more. With a swift pounce, he landed amidst the enemy ranks, conjuring dozens of roots and vines that erupted from the ground like serpents. The sinewy tendrils snaked around the Alliance members, binding them in place, rendering their movements futile. Beside him, Xu Wei's wind magic came to life in a whirlwind of destruction. The tempest of howling wind blades swept through the battlefield, slashing through dark-clad adversaries like a scythe through wheat. The Alliance members were sent sprawling, their ranks shattered by the relentless assault of wind and earth. The air was filled with the sound of gasps and cries as their enemies found themselves ensnared and battered, their resistance crumbling before the onslaught of nature's fury.

"Don't let them get away," Alexis shouted from across the lake, her voice dripping with disdain. "You weak bastards, is this all the Alliance has to show for? Can't even take care of a bunch of children?"

Milo gritted his teeth, a torrent of rage surging through him like a tempest. The fiery rage in his eyes burned even brighter as he watched Alexis taunt them from a safe distance, her betrayal an agonizing dagger in his heart. His jaw clenched, muscles coiled with fury, and every fiber of his being screamed for retribution.

'No Milo, don't let it consume you. Ignore her taunts, you need to get out of here and protect your allies,' he thought to himself.

As the battle raged on, Milo's thoughts turned to the sanctuary's impending destruction and the knowledge that would be lost forever. It was a sacrifice they had to make, but it weighed heavy on his heart. Survival was the priority now, and they would face whatever consequences awaited them together.

"Portal's almost ready!" Alistair shouted, his voice cracking with exhaustion. "Get back here!"

Milo and Xu Wei exchanged a final glance before disengaging from the fight, racing towards the shimmering portal. Behind them, the rock golems continued to hold their ground, buying precious seconds for their escape.

"Let's go!" Alistair urged, his eyes filled with equal parts relief and determination.

"Thirty seconds," Alistair announced, his voice echoing throughout the sanctuary. The countdown began to reverberate off the stone walls, its ominous tone sending chills down Milo's spine.

"Go! Now!" Xu Wei shouted as he sprinted towards the portal, his urgency mirrored in his clenched fists and furrowed brow.

Milo followed suit, his legs pumping furiously beneath him, every muscle straining against the weight of his stuffed backpack. He could feel the ground trembling beneath his feet, the sanctuary's walls groaning in protest as they prepared to cave in on themselves.

"Damn it, we'll never make it in time!" Milo thought, panic rising like bile in his throat. His heart hammered against his ribs, urging him to run faster, but he knew there was only so much his body could take.

"Stay focused!" Alistair yelled, his voice barely audible above the cacophony of crumbling stone. "We're almost there!"

Milo forced himself to push harder, his vision tunneling as the portal grew closer. He could see Alistair's outstretched hand, beckoning them forward with an air of desperation that matched his own racing heart.

"Come on, Milo!" Xu Wei called over his shoulder. He reached for Milo's hand, the wind whipping around his fingertips in a display of raw elemental power. "Let's get out of here!"

"Almost...there..." Milo gasped, his lungs burning with the effort. He felt the first tendrils of sweat trickle down his temple, mingling with the dust that filled the air as the sanctuary continued to crumble around them.

With one final burst of adrenaline-fueled speed, Milo lunged forward, grasping Xu Wei's outstretched hand just as the countdown reached its end. The last thing he remembered before the world went dark was the sensation of being pulled through the portal, his heart pounding in his ears, and the echoes of the sanctuary's destruction ringing through the air.
