Chapter 4: Why Should I?

Chapter 4: Why Should I?

As the Hummer was making its way to its destination, the country’s entire system collapsed.

Taking matters into their own hands, the state security forces mobilized their remaining forces to rescue those not affected by the disaster.

Almost 70 percent of the security forces were now undead, posing a serious threat to their survival. One fortunate aspect of the whole incident was that, aside from hunger, the undead showed no signs of intelligence.

Armed with their weapons and ammunition, the remaining forces managed to get rid of their fallen brothers in arms and secured the area that was free of undead.

That area was in the nation’s capital, and they broadcast the recapture of the city to the entire nation after they took half the city back.

.............................

A strange scene unfolded on a road within a city.

Thousands of undead were following behind a blood-smeared Hummer, which was making its way down the road.

The Hummer was mowing all the undead in its path without even stopping.

She turned her head to look at the man in the driver’s seat. “It’s strange that we have seen no one who is not affected,”

Without a glance at her, he remained focused on driving his Hummer, and replied, “They’ll survive somewhere, just like us.”

Occasionally, the vehicle would run over the undead on its way. The viper ran non-stop to clear the blood from the windshield.

As she kept staring at him, she finally said, “By the way, I’m Lisa, thanks for taking me with you”. Then she looked back at him with anticipation.

“Alex”, he replied and continued driving.

She shook her head and gazed straight ahead at the road, filled with wrecked vehicles and ripped bodies with the undead feeding off of them.

This book's true home is on another platform. Check it out there for the real experience.

An instant later, she caught sight of another man waving his hand from the first floor of the building.

“There’s a man there,” she exclaimed excitedly.

Alex glanced at the man briefly before continuing on his way.

“We could save him,” she said, looking astonished.

“Why should I?” he asked directly.

After being stunned for a moment, Lisa opened her mouth to speak, but then closed it and gazed ahead at the undead-filled road.

As she reflected on the time he saved her, it was only he who took her with him in her darkest times, when she killed her own father.

It is not her place to tell him to save someone. That was right. There was no reason to risk his life for someone he didn’t even know.

“Where would you like to go?” he asked Lisa after taking a glance at her.

She was surprised at first, as it was the first time he asked her anything.

“My mother lives in the capital, so I was thinking about checking it out,” she said, while tears formed in her eyes.

“Fine,” he replied and continued driving.

After starting, they slowly approached the outskirts of the city after traveling for almost two hours.

Comparatively to the city, this area had a much lower density of undead. Somehow, they escaped the city after many reroutes.

He looked at the fuel gauge, which showed that the fuel was running low.

He sighed and said, “We’ll stop at the fuel station; we’re running low on fuel.”

Lisa nodded and remained silent.

They came across a fuel station in the distance, and fortunately, it looked deserted.

Alex stopped the Hummer to fill up with fuel. He got out of the vehicle after stopping it. He was surprised to discover that the temperature had dropped.

Additionally, Lisa emerged from the Hummer with the bat in hand.

As Alex checked the pumping machine, he murmured, “Thank god, it’s still working.”.

After filling up his tank with fuel, he glanced around to find the supermarket inside the station.

“I was thinking about going to the supermarket there,” Alex said to Lisa.

As she looked at the supermarket, Lisa asked, “Will it be okay?”

“Anyhow, I need gas cans for refueling,” Alex replied.

As soon as he completed filling up the tank, he opened the backdoor and picked up his backpack.

“Pick up your bag too,” he said to Lisa.

Lisa came quickly and pulled the bag from the Hummer as well. After that, they strolled towards the supermarket.

Seeing the place so deserted made it appear too eerie. On arriving at the store, they discovered its door was locked.

They hurriedly knocked on the door, when suddenly they heard a sound as if something fell from the shelves. Following that, there was dead silence.

Then he glanced at Lisa and the bat she was holding. “Give me your bat, please.”

She handed the bat to him without thinking.

Taking the bat, he broke the lock of the door with tremendous force and handed the bat back to her.

“Follow me closely,” he whispered as he entered the market.
