Talent

Dominic did not have the mental capacity to think about his talent right now. Anyone who saw a giant monster dog smile at them in a human-like manner while chewing on its former owner would probably have difficulties sleeping ever again.

But this was reality for Dominic, and that dog would be done feasting soon. Now that it had detected his presence, it would definitely love to rush over and pay him a visit to discuss the mysteries of pain and how best to make him wish for death.

So, rationalizing to this point, Dominic forced himself to calm down and glanced at what his talent was. He did not have any guns or big knives in his house, and he doubted any such weapons could take down the creature he glimpsed, which was why he didn't bother to search.

It was like looking at a tank that was rolling over menacingly from enemy forces. The last thing on your mind was to rush over with your measly kitchen knife. There was only one way to take it down, so your best option was either to have some special method or run.

In this case, Dominic was looking for his 'special method'.

[Death Clones: Every time you die an unnatural death, you obtain a permanent and resurrectable clone of yourself that possesses 50% of your body's stats and abilities - except this one - which can be kept and released at will.]

Dominic was first excited, then appalled. This talent was great because there was no mention of an upper limit, but in order to accumulate clones, didn't that mean he would have to die?

Wait, first of all, how would he come back to life? Would it be instant or would time reverse to take him back to where he was previously? Or would he be given the option to resurrect where he wanted?

Dominic had so many questions but no answer was forthcoming. It would seem that for this, in particular, he would have to explore it manually in order to ascertain the rules behind it.

BANG!

And just in time, the giant pitbull crashed through the kitchen window to help Dominic achieve the answers he wanted. Clearly, it was a kind soul that cared for the world and believed that by ripping and tearing every sentient into pieces, they no longer had to worry about the apocalypse.

Dominic did not agree with this as he saw the huge beast that knocked over the kitchen counter with ease stand right beside him, its eyes slowly shifting to land on him. The man and beast stared at each other for a few seconds until it smiled and revealed a row of canines that could likely tear diamond apart.

Dominic only had the time to piss himself before the jaws opened wide and clamped down on his head, smashing it into paste. He died so quickly that he actually didn't feel any pain, and that was not because the monster before him was kinder to strangers than its own former master.

It was simply because Dominic had been sitting on the ground, so his head had been level with its mouth and was the first thing to be consumed in the bite.

Dominic entered the black void of death, a state where he was neither conscious nor unconscious, but not exactly semi-conscious either. All he knew was that some form of force seemed to act upon him, and he felt a dragging force.

Immediately, Dominic's eyes cleared, and he was still in his home. He was standing aimlessly in the kitchen area, right beside the giant pitbull that was currently ripping apart a similarly dressed corpse that was badly mangled.

The monster did not notice Dominic at first, not until the young man turned to see it chowing down on his own corpse and he began vomiting crazily that it realized that there was someone else here.

When it glanced over at the identical Dominic who was the same as the fellow it previously slaughtered and was dumbfounded. It looked between the vomiting Dominic and the corpse it was chewing back and forth, its almost human expression of confusion slightly amusing.

Then it shook its head rapidly to clear its thoughts and smiled. Who cared how there was another one? Rather than wonder why, wouldn't it be better to enjoy this special kill one-get-one-free meal?

It pawed Dominic's original corpse and put it to the side gently before casually trotting over to Dominic, who was dry heaving and regaining his senses. It looked him up and down to make sure it was not an illusion and even sniffed him.

Yep, that was definitely the smell of the living.

Making the necessary confirmation, the monster smiled once more and clamped its jaws on Dominic's waist lightning fast, lifting him up into the air. Dominic had suddenly come back to life, then filled with shock and horror, finally beginning to vomit heavily, and when placed in such a situation as heaving, one could barely move as much as they could barely breathe.

Just when he recovered and was about to get his bearings, he was lifted up by the waist, washed with so much pain and agony that he screamed loudly. The monster below had its eyes curl into happy crescents at the sounds of his scream, feeling like such a sound from its prey was a display of its superior prowess.

It then tossed Dominic into the air and then clamped down again, before doing so repeatedly, over and over again until Dominic's screams began to weaken further and further…

Eventually, the sound died down as the former pitbull placed Dominic's corpse down, which was even more mangled and ruined than the one it had been actively eating. This time, Dominic had been unfortunate to experience every part of the process before death.

The giant pitbull was non-sentient, and even being upgraded by the Omega System into an apex monster for the purpose of the Death Games, it still did not have the ability to maintain rational thought nor think critically.

However, it did have the basic ability of pattern recognition and looked around the ground floor of the house silently, waiting to see if another Dominic would pop up.

After exactly ten seconds, Dominic did appear, this time within the living room. His face was ashen, and his pupils were rapidly dilating and constricting. He was clearly extremely pale and his knees were wobbly, showing that he was in a state of extreme panic.

The monster glanced over and smiled again as it began to slowly trot over playfully. As for Dominic's new corpse, it didn't matter as it wouldn't run away, now would it? To the giant pitbull, it was better to add more to its plate than to consume what was already secured.

What shocked the monster was that Dominic seemed to come to his senses as he suddenly shuddered greatly when he saw it coming over, rushing to the nearest window before jumping through it crazily the very next moment.

The monster was surprised because the young man had been mostly stunned or panicking the entire time, so it did not expect him to take sudden and very prudent actions. Its ears perked up as it took a few steps forward to give chase but then paused.

It looked back at the two corpses behind it with extreme hesitation. It was one thing to chase after prey, but it could not allow other predators to steal the food it had secured. It sensed the presence of many others like it within the nearest kilometer, so even if Dominic ran, he wouldn't go far before meeting another one.

As such, the giant pitbull only glanced once more at the broken window before calmly walking over to the two corpses, finishing the one it had half eaten while grasping the second one in its mouth before heading upstairs to find a new den for itself.

As for Dominic, he was currently sprinting frantically through the backyard of his house, aiming for the nearby wall so that he could leap over and escape. His forehead was drenched in sweat and he was panting heavily due to his lack of exercise over the past few months as he had been mostly home-based.

However, in the face of adrenaline, all such concerns were left for future Dominic to deal with. He easily climbed over the relatively low walls since this suburban neighborhood was for the bourgeois and had a low crime rate.

When he fell unceremoniously into the new yard, Dominic did not continue running because he simply didn't have the stamina after that climb. Adrenaline certainly allowed for miracles, but not the impossible.

Dominic was left panting heavily while sweat continuously poured from his body, the heat he radiated almost palpable. He had more than a hundred thoughts racing through his brain, many disjointed and slightly related, but nothing resembling a coherent train of thought.

After all, he could still feel the lingering sensations of being attacked by that monster in his house and it wasn't easy to brush off something like that. While he was resting, Dominic couldn't help but pause when he heard a loud crash and a feminine scream.

He looked up at the two-story house in front of him, painted in a creamy-yellow color, from which a woman burst through the window of one of the bedrooms and crashed brutally to the ground.

Dominic winced as he saw her leg bend unnaturally, and as she tried to use her arm to stifle her fall, it practically shattered as the bone stabbed backward out of her elbow. However, she clearly had no time to care about the pain as she crawled away frantically, looking back with fear in her eyes.

Soon, a sleek creature leapt out of the window and landed gracefully, walking elegantly toward the crawling woman. It should have been a cat previously, but it was now a predator of the highest order, with pitch-black fur that could likely blend into the night and claws that shone with a chromatic color.

It lazily walked over with half-lidded eyes, clearly bored by this lame 'hunt.'

"No... Stacy, please... I've looked after you since you were a kitten... please don't kill me..." The woman begged as she began to sob, even as she increased the rate of her crawling.

Dominic could only watch in frozen horror, almost from a third-person perspective, as the feline monster ignored the woman's repeated pleas and approached her body. It then lifted a single claw and pierced the back of her neck casually, likely severing her spine, as the woman's movements ceased immediately, though her body kept trembling.

It then grabbed her like a sack of potatoes and slowly dragged her back into the house, even while she screamed and begged. Luckily for her, she was no longer in agony as she could not feel her shattered arm or leg anymore, but she knew a far worse fate awaited her if she was taken inside.

Dominic watched her being dragged in silently, not even daring to breathe. Only when the monster and its prey disappeared from sight and sound did he slowly get up and move as quietly and stealthily as possible toward the nearby wall.

He had no intentions of being a hero, and to be honest, he was inches away from bursting into tears from fear and shock, but he managed to swallow it all down and focus on the task at hand.

As he sneaked, Dominic's mind cleared, and he remembered his talent, which he hoped to rely on to defeat the giant pitbull. He could spawn clones of himself, right? Since he had died twice, he should then have two clones ready.

He didn't dare release them now and attract attention, although he could easily sense them. They 'existed' within his body, in a place that had nothing to do with flesh or bone. It was like a small subspace within his body that did not exist in this plane.

Unfortunately for Dominic, he only managed to cross through a bush in the back garden of this new lot before seeing the feline monster that had dragged the woman into the house casually waiting for him, lying in a bed of tulips.
