CHAPTER 1
Here I am standing in front of a pair of creepy looking steel gates. How did I get here? Well, let me tell you. My name is, or was Ren Davis. I am, or was a level 41 wizard. Cultured individuals would know that this means that the number of days I’ve lived equals the number of days I’ve been a single.
Having a strict Asian mother, I was forced to study from dawn till dusk. Not only did I attend school during the day, I came home to home schooling also. Mom always said that it was to give me an edge in life. Well she was wrong.
My mother forced me into isolation and without any friends or even time to hang out with family, I grew into an introvert. My social sills were non existent. This strict education only applied to me and not to my younger sister and brother. They both felt that it was favoritism that I got all of our mothers attention at home and I of course saw it the other way around. The two of them got to do whatever they wanted while I had to suffer alone.
It would be until we were all in our 30’s that they started to understand my point of view. I tried to tell them as children and teenagers but well, kids are cruel and the task was just impossible.
My mothers endeavors to push me in my education was a raging success however. I went on to skip many grades and graduated high school at the age of 14. No need to mention the isolation and bullying I got because of my so called talents. No one bothers to see the effort I put into my studies and only passed it off as inborn genius talent.
With a full scholarship to MIT, I went on to get several degrees until I was basically kicked out. Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Material Science, Chemical engineering, Biology, and finally Physics.
Why did I stay on for so long? It was mostly to keep away from my mother. These were also the best years of my life. There were actually people around my age and a lot of them can relate to my problems at home.
The story has been illicitly taken; should you find it on Amazon, report the infringement.
This is also when I got introduced to the wonderful world of anime, manga and light novels. I have been reading fantasy and sci-fi novels for years and I knew anime was out there but it was always forbidden at home. Heck, before I left home, I hadn’t even seen porn.
At 26 I finally left school and started my life as an adult. Or so I would have wanted to believe. I moved back home and got a job designing parts for small aircrafts. It wasn’t long until my mother forced her way back into running my life.
3 months after I got home she started hounding me about getting a wife and demanding kids. I refused to date due to my lack of social skills and so she went all out. I forced myself to go on a few dates to make her happy but most of those women had exaggerated expectations that I would slave away while they ran my life.
In other words, they were all like my own dear old mom. I tried talking to my dad about it but he was no help. It finally came down to me getting a job across the country and me basically cutting myself off from the family.
Communications were narrowed down to holidays and family emergencies. After my brother and sister popped out a few kids, mom stopped badgering me. Life got better after that. Mom tried to buy me a wife from china once when I was 35 but giving her the silent treatment for 2 years seem to have done the trick.
I was content living my otaku life. I had a good job where I really only worked an hour or two a day and the rest of the time I would read manga or read light novels online. I had a nice house filled with all of the things I tinker with and my health was pretty good.
My ‘tragic’ death came as a surprise like I would envision most deaths. I went out to get the mail and while taking out my mail from the box, I noticed a ball bump into the back of my foot. I turned around and saw my neighbors kid running across the road after the ball. I then also noticed a UPS truck just 15 feet from hitting the poor kid.
The driver was bent over seemly looking for something. Lucky for the kid and unlucky for me, the driver noticed in time and swerved out of the way of the kid and right into me. My last thought before I was turned into trauma for that poor kid and meat paste was ‘UPS Truck-kun’.
