The White House, West Wing, September 17th, 2023, United States of America
"FOR FUCKS SAKE, WHY DID THIS HAPPEN?!"
A loud, crude response from the incumbent POTUS, Lawrence F. Treffen, could barely be heard outside the oval office.
Sworn into office within the month of January the year before last, his country's turbulent situation was already a burden to deal with. Yet, he could manage. But now it had become much more serious. Stacked on his desk were reports of all kinds, paper after another about the situation of the United States, the tanking economy... Reading them one after another made it more stressful.
He did NOT want it to end like this.
These expositions made it clear to him how it happened, and when it happened. But why? Why did it happen? But it wasn't like he could do anything about it, at least anything that wouldn't hurt his reputation, which was becoming a crumbling facade. Elbow on his desk, hand on his temple, inside of him was a wandering mind, with a mix of contemplation. All he had to do was resign, but his prideful self didn't want to. No president would resign and leave a mess like this behind. He had to do something about this. Anything.
In front of his desk were two individuals, Wilken Knaugh, one of his social aides, and Johnson Martel, his Secretary of State. Wilken, acknowledging Lawrence's situation, chose to say nothing. Johnson, on the other hand, chose otherwise.
"Mr. President, we have some good news — and bad news."
"Get on with the bad news first, Johnson."
"Well, you see, Mr. President... The bad news is that we can't contact anyone outside the Anglosphere. Here, a statement from the Commission." Johnson hands over the paper.
What do they have to say?

PRESIDENTIAL COMMISSION ON THE GREAT TRANSFER INCIDENT [FORMERLY ON THE INSPECTION OF IMPORTS.]
September 17th, 2023
Dear Mr. President :
On behalf of the Commission, it is my privilege to present the report of the Presidential Commission on the Great Transfer Incident.
Since being sworn in on September 14th, 2023, the Commission has been able to piece together a comprehensive investigation of the Incident. This report documents our findings and makes recommendations for your consideration.
Our objective has been not only to record all kinds of information about the anomaly that caused the Incident but to send crucial statements for you, Mr. President, to adapt to changes caused by the Incident, of which there are many. However, the Commission did not construe its mandate to require a detailed evaluation of the entire list of changes that the Incident has made. The Commission acknowledges this responsibility and will do whatever it can to expand its knowledge of the situation based on the best sources of information that it can receive from members of the Commission and outside. Here is a list of some of the changes and issues of which not only you, Mr. President, will face, but the American People, and the entirety of the Anglosphere too.
LIST OF CHANGES
· The American economy is a dangerous path that you will have to tread on. Attempts to reconnect trade with countries outside the Anglosphere have failed, and it is clear that the Great Transfer has completely transported nations of the Anglosphere to another world. The economy is dwindling. Many economic experts both inside and outside of the Commission have stated that a recessional crisis is upcoming.
· The United States bears all the necessities of a functioning welfare state but lacks specialized resources required for producing even more specialized material for manufacturing. Securing communication and reconnecting with fellow member nations of the Anglosphere will be necessary for the United States to recover from its losses due to the Transfer. Necessary measures have been taken to ensure that this goal is a success.
· Connection with the Anglosphere has been successful, and we will secure trade with Australia, New Zealand, The United Kingdom, and Ireland once again. We have already secured trade with Canada, and we will be convening for an International Summit by September 20th, 2023. The goal of the Summit is to reaffirm the security of the Anglosphere, discuss everything about the Transfer, and cooperate with our fellow allies.
· Societal stability is an uncertainty. The Transfer has stressed out the American public, and all efforts must be accomplished to calm down the populace. There has been a lot of footage on protests, peaceful or violent, throughout the major cities of New York, Miami, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Detroit. As such, it is a recommendation for you to proclaim an end to civil disobedience.
· All but one of the satellites are gone. We have taken urgent action to resolve this problem immediately. Coordination with the largest providers of artificial satellites will result in the launch of a hundred and twenty satellites every fortnight starting today. The ISS is the largest and the only satellite to transfer with the Anglosphere.
· As for the anomaly, and the cause of the Incident, how it happened is a question that the Commission and the rest of the scientific community have no definite answers to as of yet. One of the closest theoretical answers the Commission has formed is the Universal Rift theory, which is based on the idea that multiple Universes exist, but the Commission is still unsure. All we know is when it happened, the date of which was September 12th, 2023, just two days before your request for the Committee for the 'inspection of the abrupt lack of imports'.
The nation's task now is to adapt and make do with what we have. The fate of the United States rests upon the hands of your administration. The American people put their faith in you, Mr. President.
Sincerely,
Simon G. Kauber, Chairman of the Commission
The President of the United States,
The White House
Washington, D. C. 20500

Unbelievable. Fuckin' unbelievable — God just fucking hates me, doesn't he?
What the fuck do I do? I know — I should retire– Fuck it. Why even bother, I should get my ass back on track...
While waiting for Lawrence to finish reading, Johnson becomes distracted by the many ornaments surrounding the Oval Office, contemplating his nation's history. He snaps himself out and notices that Lawrence is now reading the closure of the letter. He breaks the silence by remarking on the letter.
"Mr. President, as you can read on the letter, there are a lot of issues that you have to deal with."
"I know, Johnson. I'm not blind, and I'm not deaf either." Lawrence scoffs, folding the letter fourfold, and placing it at the desk. He then lays at the back of his chair, resting both of his arms on the armchair.
Johnson becomes aggravated. Lawrence's response gives him the urge to spew out insult after another at Lawrence. He holds in, aware of his position and fate if he ever said anything that would alienate Lawrence even once. He has dealt with him for eleven months, but this is the closest he's ever been to insulting Lawrence in person. He keeps up with the etiquette... until he finally says something.
"Mr. President, I respect you in many areas, but your brash attitude is not one of them."
Lawrence takes his time to give off a scornful look at Johnson, a clear gesture of himself becoming less comfortable with the way this conversation is going. He hunches himself forward at a pace, his hands already laid on the table, willing to end this conversation formally. He makes a weary response.
"What else do I have to say? I'm the President in a time of utmost urgency. I might as well get the stress off of my damn chest."
Johnson takes his time to hold himself more, reassuring himself that Lawrence has nothing personal to do with him. He is aware that Lawrence is having a struggle in doing his duties and giving himself some personal time, but he can't help himself to not say anything about it...
He speaks once more.
"I understand, Mr. President. But it is best to keep yourself composed now, we don't want–"
Lawrence interrupts him. He already has stressed himself enough with the paperwork. Lawrence does not want to deal with this bullshit. He wants this conversation to end immediately.
"I am trying, Johnson. And I am failing. Get it over with and listen to me."
...
After a few seconds of silence, Lawrence follows up with a calculated statement.
"I want you to make contact with London once again. Another assembly. This time, only between the two. The Eagle and the Lion."
Johnson remains silent. He knows he can't mess up this time. Lawrence continues with another calculated statement.
"American Embassy of London. As soon as possible. A few days before the summit. Coordinate with the State Department. Everything else is under your hands beyond those four orders."
"Understood." Johnson's nervous tone becomes plainer. Lawrence knows, but he has more important matters to do.
Accompanied by one of Lawrence's aides, Secretary of State Johnson Martel, within the orders from Lawrence, makes his departure out of the White House and back to Truman Building, in an official state car, where he will coordinate with the State Department for an urgent diplomatic meeting with the British.
...
Minutes after telling Johnson to leave, Lawrence slumps back to his usual position. He becomes spaced out after a while. He begins to overthink more about the letter.

...
...This is not normal. What the fuck did I just read? Another world? Multiple universes?! Wha– why the fuck are they acting so normal about this? All nations outside the Anglosphere, gone in a fucking fla... no, not even a flash. It was all abrupt — like God just placed our asses there. The Commission knows jack shit about this 'Transfer' incident. All they've given me is an empty theory and the date of when it happened. September 12th, 2023... What a horrible way to go.
...You know what? I should stop beating myself up over and over again. It's only gonna get worse anyways. I should be looking forward to this 'new world'. No China, no Russia, and no enemies. Or at least that's the case for now. For all I know, there could be a hostile civilization just two thousand miles away from our coasts. I hope it won't be the case.
...
Lawrence snaps himself out of the overthinking. He shifts and turns the chair and begins to contemplate himself once again. This time, it's not about the situation. It's about himself. What else should he do? What else can he do? These questions whirl all about in his head, but he seems to lack answers for these. He almost goes back to being spaced out... Until the phone rang.
He roughly shifts back the chair to the front of the desk and picks up the ringing phone.
Another call? What the hell is it going to be about this time?
Lawrence responds in advance, his hand firm on the phone.

DECODED TRANSCRIPT: OVAL OFFICE CALL, PRESIDENT TO VICE PRESIDENT
5 DAYS AFTER THE TRANSFER, SEPTEMBER 17TH, 2023
LAWRENCE : HELLO? THIS IS PRESIDENT LAWRENCE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. STATE YOUR NAME AND ORDER OF PRECEDENCE. ALSO YOUR AREA OF RESIDENCE, TOO. BERNARD MEETHE, VICE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, OBSERVATORY OFFICE. : BERNARD LAWRENCE : WHY YES, BERNARD, WHAT ARE YOU CALLING ME IN FOR? MR. PRESIDENT, IT IS AN URGENT MATTER. THE CABINET REQUESTS AN ASSEMBLY. : BERNARD LAWRENCE : YES, YES. I KNOW. AS FOR THE REQUEST — I'LL ACCEPT IT. I WAS ALREADY THINKING ABOUT CALLING A CABINET ASSEMBLY AN HOUR AGO. BEFORE YOU HANG THE PHONE, COULD YOU GIVE ME SOME INFORMATION ABOUT THE PURPOSE OF THIS ASSEMBLY? I'M DEALING WITH THE PLANNED INTERNATIONAL SUMMIT FOR THE NEXT WEEKEND, AND I'M GOING TO NEED SOME PERSONAL TIME. I DON'T HAVE MUCH TIME, MR. PRESIDENT. BUT IT'S ABOUT THE TRANSFER. AND IT ISN'T JUST THE CABINET THAT WILL ARRIVE HERE. : BERNARD LAWRENCE : UH–HUH, YEAH.. OKAY, WHO ELSE IS GOING IN THE CABINET ROOM? YOUR COMMITTEE, MR. PRESIDENT. : BERNARD LAWRENCE : REALLY? GOD DAMN, FINALLY THEN? ALRIGHT, I'LL REALLY BE GOING IN THERE. GOOD TO KNOW, MR. PRESIDENT, AND GOD DAMN INDEED. : BERNARD ONE MORE THING, MR. PRESIDENT– : BERNARD LAWRENCE : YEAH, YEAH. THE LETTER, I KNOW, I'VE ALREADY RECEIVED IT.
NO, MR. PRESIDENT, I KNOW YOU'RE AWARE OF THE LETTER BUT IT'S SOMETHING MUCH MORE IMPORTANT. WE'LL DISCUSS IT IN PRIVATE RIGHT AFTER THE INTERNATIONAL SUMMIT. : BERNARD.
LAWRENCE : WILL TAKE NOTE, HANGING UP THE PHONE.
----------------------------------------
Lawrence hangs up the phone, with himself now in a hunched position, with the only thing supporting him being the desk.
He has no time to contemplate. No time to stare blankly at the void. It was time for him to take action. Now.
...
Lawrence stood up and moved to the Cabinet Room. There he sat at his designated chair, just slightly higher than the other twenty-five seats. He waited for a few hours before the first two of the fifteen heads of the executive departments came in. They were Secretary of the Treasury, Alison Barbara, and Attorney General Mike Mandel. Another few minutes and there came the wave of the rest of the executive secretaries. The one who entered the room last was the Vice President himself, Bernard Meethe. Kline Ineel, Deputy Secretary of State, sat at the chair of the Secretary of State, as an acting representative of Johnson Martel, who had been given a personal order by Lawrence.
...
A few seconds of silence came... and went. Lawrence, having read the room, spoke first.
"So, ladies and gentlemen... What's the matter?" Lawrence hunches forward.
Lawrence stared at his secretaries. Some sipped their drinks, once or twice as a refreshment, many waited for somebody else in the Cabinet to respond. Eventually, Alison Barbara spoke. Lawrence turns his head to Alison.
"Mr. President, it's about the Transfer. I assume you already know much about it since you sent a committee to investigate the abrupt lack of imports from the now disappeared nations of Earth. However, what you do not know is that ... brink of another economic crisis, one that has the potential to be worse than the Great Depression. Your best course of action ... to cooperate with the Department of the Treasury, especially with the Federal Reserve."
As soon as she finished her statement, Secretary of Commerce James Mayner followed up.
"I agree with Alison. Domestic-wise, the United States is self-sufficient in its essentials. But the extreme lack of imports which constitute ... will not only be unfavorable to small commercial businesses but be detrimental for many specific industries, particularly the ... The only choice to make is for us to strengthen trade with our largest remaining trade partners, Canada and the United Kingdom, which were transferred along with the United States."
James Mayner finishes his statement. Secretary of Agriculture Mark Larry follows up with his statement. Lawrence turns his head once again. This time, his eyes at Mark.
"Mr. President, the issue of the lack of imports is not only a detriment to commerce and the service economy but also the agricultural industry. Produce has significantly decreased in a matter of days, and the Department of Agriculture has to implement emergency measures to ... and keep up with the demand."
Finally, President Lawrence makes a confident, straightforward response.
"Secretary Barbara, Secretary Mayner, and Secretary Larry — your departments are granted permission to do whatever they can to resolve the underlying issues of their respective duties. Anyone else?"
Lawrence takes another sip of water as a way of coping with his stress. Meanwhile, Secretary of Defense Karl Baldric speaks up.
"Mr. President, the Department of Defense has several underlying issues. Some of our subordinate agencies have had their capabilities rendered useless due to the Transfer, particularly that of the NGA, ... Cooperation with the NRO and the space industry has alleviated some of the damages caused by the Transfer, but full recovery can only be accomplished in due time. Because of this, spatial GEOINT will be less effective. Fortunately, the Transfer has not damaged our naval, air, and ground capabilities... At least not to an extent."
Lawrence takes his time swallowing the information. Simultaneously, he becomes ever more anxious. Lawrence makes a crude comment.
"Not to an extent? What the hell do you mean about that, Karl?"
Karl follows up on his affirmation.
"Mr. President, the Navy, and the Army are fine. No expensive assets were lost before, during, and after the Transfer. However, for some damned reason, the anomaly wasn't merciful enough to teleport any aerial assets that were flying anywhere outside of our borders. Those that were grounded in our bases abroad were spared, however, so the losses were minimal. As for the current location of our bases, all of them were teleported by the Transfer. Now they're all around the inner regions."
Immediately after listening to Karl's say, Lawrence makes another comment.
"I see. Some of those bases should be demolished and their assets transferred to reduce maintenance costs."
Karl tells Lawrence assuringly.
"I do think so too, Mr. President. It will take a while to relocate those assets and organize them, but it will be worth it."
After a long-winded session of statements between Lawrence and Karl, Secretary of Transportation Terrance Wilde spoke next in a quick manner.
"Mr. President, the Department of Transportation is struggling to ground all flights. The aerospace industry is in a crisis of its own. At least seven hundred commercial airliners have disappeared due to the Transfer and there are still hundreds more flying within the continent. The FAA organized a national meeting in its HQ and dozens of officials from ... in the United States to coordinate on launching a recovery program. Furthermore, the FHWA, the FRA, and the FTA are reconnecting highways that have been cut off by the Transfer, which will force us to limit road access within the former US-Mexico border."
Lawrence had heard enough. He wanted the assembly to end at this instant. He speaks once more.
"I've heard enough. It's clear to me that there are issues all around the United States that are rooted in this incident. For those who weren't able to voice out about their matters specific to their departments, you may send a letter to the Oval Office. Otherwise, cooperate with your agencies to solve these issues. The assembly has ended, everyone may leave."
The assembly has ended. By etiquette, Lawrence is the first to leave. Right after he does, members of the Cabinet leave in unison.
...
Lawrence is once again seated at his chair in the Oval Office. He's getting tired of all these meetings. He knows that he still has another one to go. So many problems, so little time.
