Meeting With Arrogance
The ‘Resident’ and I were sitting down eating breakfast at a cafe called Veiled Sights on the north side of town. After all that work this morning breakfast tasted even better than usual. We sat quietly as we ate. Looking out the window you could see dark clouds rolling in and that the wind was picking up.
“Kaz,” I tore may gaze from the clouds. “I think that it would be a good idea to hold some kind of event this week.”
“Why?”
“… Well it has been a very stress filled month. With the Zombies rising from the dead, the mass merd deaths, town being isolated, and you leaving for a week just to name a few.”
“True…”
“So to let the citizens release some stress why don’t you hold an event.”
“Hm, well I could move the Skull Ball tournament up to the end of this week.”
“That is good. The tournament should take everyones mind off of things for a little while and lessen the tension in town.”
“Sigh, thats all good but that just adds more work for me to do. Well the tournament isn’t to hard I guess. Ah yes, ‘Resident’ I want you to be at the meeting that will be happening around two today.”
“… Understood.”
“Good, I have something to do now so I’ll see you then.” I pulled out some money and laid it on the table for the bill and walked outside leaving the ‘Resident’ alone. Once outside I could feel the wind whipping around showing just how big of a storm was coming in. I headed down to the Town Hall. It was almost time to meet with the head of the Hidden City.
When I made it to the Town Hall I noticed that the hole in the ground was now closed up leaving no trace that it was ever there. I walked in to be greeted by Lisa.
“Jim is waiting for you in your office.”
“Excellent, Lisa can you do me a favor and arrange for a meeting at two pm today?”
“Will do. Anything else?”
“No.” As she turned back to her work I headed down to my office.
Jim sat in a chair in front of my desk going through some of my documents with the curtain drawn to block out the light. Standing next to him was a woman dressed very similarly to Jim with head to toe tight fitting black cloths. The only things that weren’t covered were half of her hands, her eyes, and ears. [ Sigh… ] I shut the door to get his attention. “Morning Jim, how is it going?”
Jim set down the papers he was reading making his nails click on the desk. “Better now that the hole is closed.” I forced a professional smile onto my face as I sat down. [ This will be annoying. ]
“Well that’s good to hear.”
“I’m sure. However why was there a hole there in the first place? This should of never happened. I’m sure that we had made a deal that something like this would never occur.” My face twitched slightly at his words.
“I’m sorry Jim there was nothing I could due about it until now.”
“While I’m sure that your apology is sincere. It will not fix anything or roll back time. Now I am happy that you have fixed the hole that aloud the Others to view my home, however that does not change the fact that it was viewed in the first place.”
“… I did cover it up in the announcements yesterday.”
“Ah yes, that pathetic excuse on the radio. If I remember correctly it was something about it being an illusion. Right so the people that are now missing or dead are because it was an illusion, and that bridge that was built across the hole was just a mistake because the hole was an illusion the entire time. Really I don’t see why you thought something like that would work. No one in their right mind would buy that.”
“I’m sure that the citizens will let it go since so many things were going on that week while I was gone.”
“And if they don’t? Another town located under their own feet is something I would pay attention to. Why wouldn’t they? Do tell.”
“Sigh, listen Jim. The people in Shadow Wood hold little to no interested in things outside of their own community. Unless it directly effects them. Isn’t it the same for the Hidden City?” Jim’s frown depend when I said this.
“The Hidden City often pays attention to things outside of its walls, especially in Shadow Wood. Do you not often seek us out to preform these little missions of yours.”

I held onto the bridge of my nose in annoyance. “Yes, but that is related to you. If you did not get missions that involved things outside of the Hidden City would you pay attention?”
Jim’s eyes dilated as he glared. “… No…”
“That is exactly why saying that it is an illusion will work. None of the people here get missions like you. As such they hold little to no interest in such things. If it comes up in the meeting today it will be dealt with accordingly.”
“I hope so… Zara will be the one going to meetings from now on. She will also be the one that will take over for me in the Hidden City.” The woman’s, next to Jim, pointed grey ears twitched at those words. “As such she will be coming up more often to get an understanding of how things work. If there are any assignments for my people just give it to her. She will also be the one to give reports in from now on.”
“… I see. Is it really time for you to be retiring with all the things that are going on?”
“All the stuff that is going on now is the reason I am retiring. Anyways it is important to change officers when times are difficult to show that they can adapt quickly. It is also a part of our customs. Now introduce yourself.”
“…Good morning, I am Zara of the Camazotz tribe it is a pleasure to meet you.” Zara bowed when she said this.
“Good. Now I will be leaving Zara here for the rest of the day. Good day.” Jim walked out the door without looking back completely ignoring the trouble that he is causing. Zara just stood in front of my desk looking at me as if waiting for some kind of order or explanation.
“Sigh… Can you do paperwork?”
