An Immortal's Pain
7 | Escape: Part 1

7 | Escape: Part 1

Razrushitel was having a bad day. The head of the guards had yelled at him in the morning. He had been sentenced to clean the latrines in the troll sector. "If you had ever seen a troll use the bathroom”, he thought, “you would not hand out that punishment so lightly. And only for a minor discretion. I only ate one pixie. It’s not my fault they look so delicious.”

To compound the insult, he now had to check on a prisoner who a god, a GOD, was holding. Gods and demons shouldn’t mix in his opinion. There was too much bad blood between their respective leaders for it to make sense that the higher-ups would allow one to order them to do something, especially since the god in question was a god of light. Plus, there was no reason that the prisoner needed to be checked on. Nobody who was working there, at least in the lower levels of the guard corps, had ever seen the human move. He was broken. According to some of the older guards, he had been staring at the ceiling for over thirty years now. How the creature hadn’t died, Raz didn’t know, as nobody had fed it over the same time frame.

He opened the door to the cell where it was being held. Lo and behold, it was still there in the same position as always. Groaning, he went about his routine, making sure there was no tunnel forming, that none of the bricks in the wall were loose, anything that the prisoner could possibly use to escape. Finding nothing amiss, he walked over to the prisoner and poked him. “Why do we even have you here?” the demon asked rhetorically, “You’re basically fucking dead. It would be a smart move by management to just get rid of you. It’s not like the god would notice, he’s probably forgotten all about you.”

The prisoner had no response. “Of course you aren’t going to say anything,” the demon grumbled, “I’m not even sure if you possess a brain anymore.”

As the demon turned around to leave the cell, he felt something grab a hold of him from behind. Suddenly the world was upside down. “Shit,” the demon thought.

He was hurled through the air, striking the wall on the other side of the cell from the door. Dazed, he attempted to regain his footing but was met with a punch to the temple. He sprawled out against the wall. The prisoner, who had just been lying on the table like an invalid was in front of him, a crazed grin on his face. The prisoner punched him again, and again, and again. Raz was barely seeing straight. Eventually, he collapsed onto the floor and the last thing he felt was a burning sensation in his chest as he watched the human punch through his ribs and rip out his heart.

Pavel stood up, his hands dripping with the blood of the slain demon. He was still holding the demon’s heart. He made a fist and squashed it. The achievement that he had gained was interesting. He figured that in his fight out of there, he might be able to tier it up at least once. He also wondered if there were achievements like it for each creature or race; he would enjoy a Godslayer achievement once he finally killed Lenus.

He quickly allocated his free points into vitality. His class and profession did not give him great increases to it and he figured that he would have to do a lot of mele fighting to escape the prison. Vitality would help him tank a few more blows before he would die. As long as he was able to survive the fight, he would probably be fine as his regeneration factor would keep him alive afterward in all likelihood.

Pavel kneeled down and started rummaging through the pockets of the dead guard, looking for anything useful. He only found a large key ring with hundreds of labeled keys. That was good, it would make the first stage of his plan much easier. He stripped the guard of his pants, as he was a similar size as the guard, though the shift was mangled beyond repair due to his actions while killing the guard. He also retrieved the guard’s badge in case it could be used for something in the future. He grabbed the guard’s sword and pulled the corpse to the corner of the room, out of the direct line of sight of the door. He just had to hope that nobody would enter the room and see the bloodstains on the wall from their tussle.

Pavel made his way to the doorway and peeked out into the hallway. There was one guard at the far end of the hallway; Pavel’s cell was located at the end of the corridor. Luckily for Pavel, the guard was facing away from him, which would make sneaking up on it easier. Pavel slowly crept out of the room, drawing his sword, and started down the hallway. Once he was close to the guard he struck, removing the head of the unsuspecting demon from its shoulders.

He caught the body as it slumped to the ground to lessen the chances that someone or something heard his activities. He grabbed the body and pulled it back to his cell, piling it up on top of the previous one. Again, he left the cell, this time closing the door behind him and locking it. He made his way to the door of the cell next to him and pulled out the corresponding key to the markings on the cell door. He opened it and stepped into a room that looked exactly like the one that he had spent his time in.

He stepped inside, seeing someone strapped to the table, just as he had been for all those years. He wouldn’t wish that fate on anyone. Well, almost anyone. There was one person that he would do it to. “Hey man,” Pavel prodded, “There any way to get you out of these things?”

The man jerked his head to face Pavel. “Why,” he asked, “You gonna get me out of here?”

“Yeah,” Pavel responded, “Figure if I start a larger break or even a riot, it just increases my chances of getting out of here alive.”

“Count me in,” the man said, “Been waiting to be able to get back at these fucking bastards for ages. The only time I remember being unlocked, the guard placed his badge at the foot of the table and my straps came off. It won’t be easy to get one though.”

“Not to worry,” Pavel said, “Already killed two of those bastards and thought a badge might come in handy.”

Pavel made his way to the foot of the table and saw an indent where a badge could be placed. He did it, and the straps went limp. The man stood up, stretching. “Thanks, mate,” he said, “The name’s James. You said you killed two of the fuckers, you happen to have an extra badge and set of keys laying around somewhere. Figgure I might be able to help you wrangle up some extra help. A bit more chaos for the both of us.”

Pavel shook his hand and they started out of the room. “Yeah, if the other guard I killed had them on him, I should.”

They made their way to Pavel’s old cell, James equipping himself with the same outfit as Pavel: the badge, keys, pants, and sword. “You got any clue on navigating this place?” James asked.

“No, but I figure we can pick up a map somewhere in this hellhole,” Pavel responded, “Let’s go free some more of the poor bastards locked up down here. What got you in here in the first place?”

“Killed a few too many lesser demons and some archdemon decided to take offense to that, so voila, I ended up here. You?”

“Pissed off a god,” Pavel responded.

“Shit mate, that’s tough. Didn’t know the higher planes slummed with the lower ones.”

They made their way to the next few cells, unlocking them, but finding nobody there. “I’ve been meaning to ask,” Pavel said as the found another empty cell, “What are your capabilities.”

James gave him a weird look. “I thought you would have Analyzed me by now? I figure you’re over level 10?”

Pavel smacked his forehead, “Right, forgot about that.” He proceeded to do so, getting the results back that James was a Human - Warrior - Level 19.

“Damn, you’re ahead of me on levels by a good bit,” Pavel commented.

“Ok, something’s up,” James said, “You don’t know as much as you should. I’ve been ignoring the inconsistencies for a while now, but you seem like a child with the System. What's up?”

Pavel gave him a brief rundown of what had happened to him. However, he omitted some of the details about how long he had been down there and his immortality. He felt that they would raise some further questions or envy that he did not want to deal with. Having dealt with the questions, they set out. When they finally made it to the end of their hall, Pavel silently motioned that he was going to peek around the corner. He stuck his head out, trying to catch a glimpse of danger. Nothing. They made their way out and walked down the corridor. About 50 meters ahead was a door, one that looked different than all of the cell doors that they had passed.

The duo made their way over to it and readied themselves for a fight as they entered. As they opened the door, to their surprise, there was only one guard there, a Lesser Demon (Sloth) - Guard - Level 13, who was sleeping in the chair. The duo quickly slit his throat, making sure that he didn’t make a noise.

The room seemed to be a break room or guard room, as there was food and personal effects stored there. However, the only thing that they found of interest to them was a map of the prison. It showed where the different quarters of inmates were and where the higher-priority prisoners were held. Some guard routes were even shown on it.

The two men sat down to form a plan. They weren’t worried about anyone coming in, as they would likely hold the element of surprise against whatever walked through the door. It also seemed that the two of them combined could take on any one guard, as all of the guards that they had encountered were of a lower level than James and Pavel had demonstrated that he had the capability to take them.

The first thing that they marked on the map was the solution to their objective. There was a transport grid that James recognized as the one that they had brought him to the prison from. If they were able to make it there, James would be able to return to his home and Pavel would be able to go, well, somewhere.

However, the room was likely heavily guarded, so they decided to continue with Pavel’s previous plan of causing as much chaos as possible to draw the guards away from that room. It seemed that the prison had segregated the prisoners by race, with the orcs in one area, the trolls in another, and so on. They planned to cause a riot throughout the prison in hopes that that would warrant a heavy response from the wardens.

With the plan set, they headed out. At a fork in the corridors, they split up; Pavel going to free the Elves, Trolls, and maybe the Angels, if they were under guard that he could break, and James heading in the other direction to free the Humans, and the other assorted races that had been lumped together for some reason. They would meet up where the passages met up again near the warden’s office and teleporter. Saluting each other, each man disappeared into the depths of the prison.
