Chapter II: Curiosity Has Its Benefits

Chapter II: Curiosity Has Its Benefits

Woopsie. Fell asleep there for a bit. The smell of something delicious stirred up my stomach, and now it's rumbling. Pretty loudly. You know how it sounds like when someone's working a jackhammer outside your house? I'd compare it to that. I should cry a bit, to alert my family about my problems.

"Wahh! Wahh!"

Whoo. Still not used to this. I tried my best impression of how a newborn would sound, and it came out pretty well, if I do say so myself.

Let's look around while waiting. My line of sight is sort of restricted, the walls of the crib are like pillars that block my view. Even so it still looks like I can see a fair amount of the room.

Hmm. My crib seems to be centered in the room. And it's circular, not rectangular. Weird, but, okay. Directly above me is a mobile. You know, one of those things that hang over the crib and spin around continously. And somewhere in the background, the radio is playing some kid-ish music. The repetitive tone somehow reminds me of a popular lullaby sung in my world.

Wait. Since there's radios, we should be at least a bit technologically advanced. At least that confirms that I didn't reincarnate in some medieval era, although that would've been cool.

Let's look around some more.

Only then I realise the music I was hearing wasn't actually coming out of a radio, it's from a, wait. Holographic TV? Goddamn.

This world seems much more modern than my old one. At least I don't remember there being holograms in every house. When I peer to my right, a screen emerges. I reach for it and tap it. I can't understand the language. It's incomprehensible. The moment I tap onto the screen, the music changes and instead, a sort of dubstep sounding one plays. Pressing it again, this time it plays a wonderful sounding piano piece. Even though I was born into a poor family in my past life, I always did enjoy playing various instruments, including the piano. So hearing a piece similar to B**thoven's "Moonlight Sonata" makes me feel relaxed.

While listening to the piano, I look around my room once again. Various types of furniture, are placed in certain places.

I hear footsteps, and decide to stop scouting and relaxed myself once again.

The door opens, and the figure of my mother walks in. She looks particularly curious, as the first thing she seems to recognise upon entering my room is that the earlier kid-ish music has now turned into a piano piece.

"Kenneth? What happened here?"

"Guaaa?"

"Oops. My bad. Seems like you figured out how to change the music. You're so smart!"

Uh, sure. I guess. All I did was tap the screen a few times, but sure. Praise me more. Be awed by my almighty prowess!

My mother heads towards me, and picks me up. I try to move my legs to adjust my posture to make myself easier to be picked up, but realise that, my legs aren't moving. What the....

My whole lower body is paralysed! I can't move my legs at all!

"Oh? No need to try moving Kenneth. Leave it all to mommy. You were born as a cripple, so you can't move your lower body."

Noo! Wait.

Actually that might be good.

I mean, it's bad in the same way, but, that means I don't have to move around! and I get to pass myself as a disabled person. Well I am disabled, soo someone's gotta push me around my wheelchair once I get bigger.

The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

Still though. I guess this is a sign to take it easy? I did work my ass off in my past life.

After picking me up, Mother and I head downstairs, and hell, she's not even giving me time to analyse my surroundings! Okay, let's just look around quickly. Outside my room, there's two others beside it. One labled, "Lena's room", and the other, "Lucas' room."

That means I have two siblings. Possibly older than me. Gah! Mom wait! I'm trying to look around!

Not even giving me time to cry, we soon reach the dining room, I assumed. There were 3 people seated in the large circular table.

"Oh, is that Kenneth? Can I hold him, Mom?" A blonde haired girl asks.

This must be my sister Lena. And the one beside her Lucas. Lena looks to be aged between 14 to 16 years old, with curves that'd make you think she was a full grown woman. I would've thought she was my aunt or something if she didn't call my name like she was calling a pet.

Lucas has brown hair, and has a fine toned body. He looks like the dependable older brother. Unlike Lena, he doesn't seem as ecstatic to see me, but nevertheless he still showed some hint of excitement in his amber eyes.

"All right, Lena. I'll let you hold your baby brother later. Let's eat first."

"Gauu?"

Mm, mm. Smells delicious. There were a good number of dishes placed around the table. Ranging from some fried meat, which I guessed as chicken, and some sort of salad in the corner. Ooh. Rice. I love rice.

Although I was from America in my past life, I did enjoy eating rice. I always regarded it as my staple food. When I first took a bite out of it, I never stopped eating out along with my other dishes that I used to cook.

"Op, op. Where do you think you're reaching for young man? You're still a newborn. You still have to drink my milk."

What. No. Hell no. I want my rice.

"Waaaaa! *sniff*"

"I know it smells delicious, but please hold yourself. When you get older, I'll let you eat some, too, okay?" (Mikaela)

(In case you guys forgot, MC's name is Michael, now Kenneth.

His Mother is named Mikaela, his dad George, his brother Lucas, and his sister Lena.)

I wanted to eat, but this body didn't allow me to. Instead my mom gave me her breast milk once again, and I indulged.

After eating, mom handed me over to Lena, who was looking at with a joyful expression.

"Be careful. Remember he's a cripple."

"I will, Mom. Thanks!"

After holding me in her arms, she began to rock me back and forth, or should I say swing.

Lena was pretty comfortable, too. I felt a wave of drowsiness again, and I soon fell asleep.

Once I woke up, I noticed that we were somewhere outside the house. It's my first time seeing it from outside, but it was pretty huge. It was around 3 floors tall, and we were living in a busy part of the city, from what I could gather.

Looking around, I saw people flying through the air, not supported by any jetpacks, or rocket boots, but rather by using wind. Yup. Magic.

People propelled thenselves throughout the air using wind magic to steer their bodies, allowing for free control of flight.

I, myself was inside a stroller. We weren't floating or anything of the sort, rather, Lena was the one pushing me, with the rest of the family walking beside her.

Seems like we were on a little family stroll around the city. I looked around once again, and relished myself in the beauty of this futuristic city. Instead of machines being powered by coal and oil like in my old world. I could see that people in this world used magic to power theirs.

I tried to muster my power to make some sort of magic to appear, but all I received was nothing.

Sweat started to appear on my body, and I realised that it seemed to be more fragile than normal ones. I got tired pretty easily.

Well, all that trying made me exhausted. I took a nap once again.

When I awoke, we seemed to have been back at the house, and I was placed in my old baby crib.

I decided to keep on practicing magic, and if that didn't work, well, I'd try to use other means.

I've always particularly been more proud of my mind. I always held better in times where I had to memorise things. Give me a minute or two, and I would have remembered almost every word in a page.

I also prided myself in being able to think faster. Critical thinking questions were never hard, and oral tests were more like recitals. It was just me speaking facts the whole time.

A certain number days later.

During my time practicing, I had noticed something in my body. My mind seemed to be able to read simple letters in this world's language. Practicing this ability, I could now remember every letter in the alphabet, and was beginning to arrange simple sentences.

Not through my mouth though, no. I used the screen beside me to type in it's keyboard, practicing.

And soon enough, I could now form at most, 7 word sentences.

I also noticed something else. Whenever I cry about something, Mother almost always seems to allow it. Like that one time when I wanted to be breastfed, but she said no.

I cried for a bit, and soon enough, it was almost like she didn't even refuse me in the first place. Is it because I'm a baby?

Or.

Is there something else involved?
