Chapter 16: Overtime

Ria

I headed towards the police line with Seri to see what I could do to help them with the relief efforts.

“Who are you?” one of the district police asked.

“Veria Zakilo, licensed medical and field surgeon.” I showed him my holo-card with my credentials on it.

He then deactivated the police line and let me step through and he let Seri through without question, guess the harpy jetsuit is identifying enough. I just shook my head as I walked into the area where some of the officers were gathered around a young man. He has a few IMR wounds on his body from what looks like glancing blows with a laser weapon.

“So, Instantaneous mass reduction wounds, laser weapon obviously, he a defector?” I asked while observing his quite frankly lucky escape from the foundry.

Another police officer nodded at me.

“Not without almost becoming a strainer for his efforts, he explained the situation going on in there, its not pretty.” She commented while looking at the poor man.

I nodded back before staunching the intermittent blood leakage.

“He’ll need some lab skyn regrowth but he’ll live.” I noted after using staunching compound.

You might be reading a stolen copy. Visit Royal Road for the authentic version.

The defector nodded deliriously and was sent to the back of an ambulance. I then really looked around the scene in front of me and I saw that there were a lot of pockmarks on the road, likely from plasma weapons.

“Has there been any activity from the foundry?” I asked after I finished getting my bearings.

“Beyond our defector? No” the police officer from earlier answered.

I then just sighed until I heard a great clanking and rumbling through the ground that almost knocked me over. Looking in the direction of the rumbling I saw a huge AIndroid that had knuckles covered in spikes and huge feet that cracked the plascrete ground.

“Well, this might be a problem.” I noted as I opened my toolbox and slapped on my buzzsaw gauntlet revving up the tungsteel tipped blade.

“What happened to do no harm?” The police officer asked, looking at my weapon.

“I think we can agree that AIndroids aren’t a people.'' I noted with a wide grin.

Then I started running parallel to the AIndroid looking for any obvious weak points in the machine’s design. The only thing I could really come up with was the legs but getting there was going to be a problem as the knuckledrivers on its arms are going to be terrible for my health. Looking behind the AIndroid I saw it…some wires.

“Ok…what would Akari do…?” I pondered while running. “Well, besides insulting Xeriko she’d probably say “try rolling under the legs.”

And I did just that as I kicked on more speed and rolled under the AIndroid’s ground rattling knuckledriver to pop back up behind the beast and I saw an external battery pack.

“I still wonder why these are built like that…its not like an exposed battery is doing them any favors.” I postulated.

During my musings the AIndroid pivoted on its torso to face me again instead of keeping its back exposed.

“Yeah that makes more sense.” I pouted.

It trundled along trying to attack me again and I just kept running, keeping it away from the police line.

“Maybe Akari was right, we definitely need to build a vehicle.” I groaned as I kept running.

I then doubled back and slashed at a leg with my revving buzzsaw and made a deep gash into Knuckledriver’s leg.

“Ok that still works, awesome.” I remarked as I made sweeping slashes before the bot started teetering and fell over where I severed the wires hooking the battery to it. I also retrieved the battery and stuffed it into my bag for Akari so she could tinker with it.

Looking around to make sure no one was hurt I went back to the cordon so I could check for any more defectors or treat any plasma burns from deterring fire. I sighed as I walked back grumbling to myself.

“I’m totally asking for hazard pay after all this nonsense.”
