Chapter 16: Class-D Anomaly Part 1

Now aware of just how much time he had left, Riddick wasted no time and got to work. At this time, Zoe couldn't help but ask, "Do you require assistance?"

Riddick promptly refused, "Not at the moment."

Zoe then asked, "What is it you're making?"

Riddick began setting up a few materials and replied, "For starters, I think I'll make a few smoke bombs."

"I see. Do you need me to research a guide?"

Riddick refused, "That won't be necessary." After saying this, Riddick remained silent and began to work.

He first got an old-looking bowl that was kept on the shelf and used it to mix together 3 parts potassium nitrate, 2 parts sugar, and 2 parts baking soda. This was to act as his smoke bomb fuel.

After that, he began tearing off small squares of aluminum foil and placed a small amount of the fuel mixture at the center of each square. He then began to fold the foil squares into tight packets, ensuring that the mixture was well contained inside.

He then put those aside, picked up the wax paper, and began to cut squares from it, which were only slightly larger than the foil packets. He placed each of the small packets into the wax papers and twisted the ends shut, forming small pouches.

Next, Riddick examined one in his hand and nodded contentedly, "That should do. I just need to light them at the ends before use." Saying this to himself, he put the makeshift smoke bombs aside and got to work on something else.

‘I'll need a weapon, just in case. Long-range at that.’ Riddick thought to himself, and immediately knew what he would make using the materials present.

‘I think I should be able to makeshift rifle.’ Having settled on a weapon, Riddick got to work on trying to create a makeshift rifle.

He started by trying to create a barrel. To do this, he attached one of the metal rods he had to one end of the PVC pipe using duct tape and a bit of adhesive, ensuring that it was stable and straight.

Next, he moved on to the body. For this, he quickly cut the PVC pipe to his desired length, in consideration of the overall size the rifle would be. Then he took the barrel and used the strong adhesive to attach it to the barrel, making sure that it was properly centered and accurately aligned.

After doing so, he put it on the side and allowed the adhesive to set as he began to craft the stock. To start, he attached the wooden plank perpendicular to the body of the rifle and used screws to secure it in place.

Then came the firing mechanism. This was fairly simple to do, as he only needed to drill a small hole in the barrel where the ammunition would be put. As for what he would use as ammunition, Riddick quickly sorted through some sizable nuts and bolts that could fit and loaded them into the barrel, making sure their sharp ends were the ones that would be fired out.

His focus then shifted toward the tension mechanism. For this, he used strips of rubber bands by attaching one end of the rubber band to the barrel and the other end to the stock, creating tension when pulled back.

The next step would have been to test and adjust it, but Riddick really didn't have the luxury of doing this. Not only would that be noisy, but it could also ruin the gun, as it wasn't very strong to begin with. He could only put it aside and aim to use it as a last resort or if necessary.

Now, he looked at what he had created so far and thought to himself, ‘That's about all I need in terms of items I can carry. The rest I'll need for traps.’

Thinking along these lines, Riddick turned his attention toward the batteries and canisters of fuel present. He picked these items up, along with some wire, cans, tape, and adhesive. He then left the shack and went over toward the cars he had left uncovered.

Crouching near one of them, Riddick began to put the explosive materials into the cans, as they could rupture upon impact or ignition. After connecting wires, Riddick strategically placed the explosive canisters near vital parts of the car, such as the engine and the fuel tank, with the wires acting as tripwires.

From here, he connected another thin wire and tied it to the suspension of another car a few meters away. This was to ensure that all the gaps through which a person could walk through in between the cars were rigged.

So long as someone passed by and triggered it, the single trigger mechanism would ignite and set off a chain reaction. He did this on either side of the gate, where he had left a few sets of uncovered cars. So long as one person walked through and tripped the wire, it would ignite up to three cars at the same time, which would likely further ignite more, in turn taking out some of the enemies or acting as a good distraction.

Riddick then turned to the few items he had left and wondered what else he could do with them. It was then that his gaze turned toward the house once more.

Thinking along these lines, Riddick returned to the shack, got a few more items, and went over back toward the house.

Sneaking into the kitchen, this time he had brought along electrical wires, one battery, metal plates and meshes, some rubber, and the switches he had found. From there, Riddick left the items on the kitchen counter and looked out into the hallway again.

The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings.

For this trap to work, he needed to determine the areas most likely to be passed through by the intruders. After doing this, he began to lay electrical wires along the floors and some other surfaces where the intruders were likely to tread, making sure to conceal the wires as much as possible.

Next, Riddick connected the wires to a power source, a battery. But he thought for a moment and chose not to connect them only to the battery, but also the generator, to act as the secondary power source.

This was to ensure he got maximum voltage and could kill anyone unlucky enough to fall victim. Afterward, placed many of the metal meshes he had in strategic locations of the house and secured them tightly using adhesive. This would ensure the electrical current flowed through anyone who came in contact with them.

Parts of rubber where then used to create insulation barriers to some of the meshes to make sure the electric current didn't dissipate too quickly or accidentally discharge.

Lastly, Riddick incorporated the old switches by using them as triggers, replacing the original ones that covered the house. So if someone were to wake up and turn on the light, they would activate the trap and likely die instantly from electrocution.

But Riddick couldn't put it past the intruders to have insulated boots, so he wanted to go another step further.

But before he could do this, he turned to his watch and asked again, "Zoe, how much time do I have left now?"

"You have 8 minutes and 42 seconds."

Hearing this, Riddick pulled the watch away from his face and pondered for a moment before giving a slight nod.

"I just have to wing the last part," saying this, Riddick walked over into the kitchen and turned on the tap for the sink. Then, he went into the downstairs bathroom and turned on that sink as well, making sure to plug them up so the water could keep filling up and eventually overflow.

After he finished doing this, he exited through the window with the makeshift rifle in hand and the smoke bombs hanging off his waist. Then, he turned his attention toward the front gate where the intruders would most likely come through.

He looked around the yard, noting potential vantage points. But as his thoughts trailed off, he focused on the cars near where he stood, or to be precise, under them.

He quickly walked over, laid on the ground, and crawled under one. He then began to bring out his gun and aim it at different angles to see where he could get the best shots off, if necessary. To do this, he had to repeat this action on several more cars before he found one with the right angle, thankfully not too far from his Morgan, and roughly 100 meters away from the front gate and about 30 meters away from the house.

"This will do, now, we wait."

With nothing more he could do, Riddick settled into the point he had found and began to wait patiently as the minutes ticked away. Eventually, when he had around 1 minute left until Jamie's alarm went off, he began to hear the sound of engines in the distance.

It was low, and someone with ordinary hearing likely wouldn't be able to hear.

However, Riddick could, and taking his hearing into account, he could estimate the distance.

‘They're probably about a kilometer out,’ he thought to himself before letting out a sigh and then taking a deep breath as his eyes gained focused.

While Riddick considered both of these measures, there were many concerns that still plagued his mind. The biggest being if there was a powerful superhuman present.

Thankfully, the chances of this were low.

If that were indeed the case, Phil wouldn't have been so concerned about coming, unless Riddick was unaware of Johnny having superhuman abilities as well, in which case his whole plan may fall apart depending on how the two sides clashed.

Again, he felt the chances of this were extremely low, but he didn't rule them out completely because, although he could be considered extraordinary by virtue of being a superhuman, he belonged to the lowest class, Class D.

In the modern classification of superhumans, there existed five classes: Class D, C, B, A, and X.

Class D was made up of those with basic superhuman abilities and was considered the lowest tier. Examples included enhanced strength, speed, and senses. And because Riddick possessed superhuman physiology, he too fell under this class, same as Nikolai at one point.

After this came Class C, which was often called the class where true superhumans began, as some didn't even consider Class D's to be superhuman at all.

The classification was based on which powers were most prominent, and for Class C, the three most prominent subclasses were Telepathy; the ability to read minds and communicate telepathically, Technokinetics; power of manipulation over technology, and Biokinetic; control over biological processes.

Class B was where things really became dangerous, as the three most prominent classes were Pyrokinetic; control over fire, Chronokinetic; manipulation over time; and Geomancers; control over earth and nature.

Then came, Class A. Where people possessed superhuman abilities that bordered on godlike. The three most prominent abilities being Cosmic; manipulation over cosmic forces, Quantum Master; mastery over quantum mechanics, and Reality Warper; ability to alter reality at will.

And although these three prominent classes existed, they had ever only been three cases of each subclass, with each person having been killed before they could ever fully explore their powers…

Then finally came, Class X, famously known as the class to which Von Creed belonged.

Class X was marked for individuals whose powers couldn't be categorized by the other classes due to uniqueness or unpredictability. It’s three prominent classes were,

Anomalies; A class to which Von Creed and Nikolai belonged, individuals with powers that defy explanation, Void Walkers; control over space and dimensions, and Ethereal/Arcane beings; existences beyond conventional understanding such as demons, magicians and so on.

The reason it was called the classification and not a power system was simple: it was because power really could never be measured accurately by pinning classes against each other.

Classes existed to define the average level of danger one could expect from a superhuman in that category, but they were never definitive.

As Riddick just proved by killing a Pyrokinetic, considered to be a Class B superhuman. However, if Riddick were instead met face-to-face with a Chronokinetic, under those circumstances, he may have very well died.

In the world of superhumans, nothing was ever concise, and thinking one was powerful simply because of their class was sheer stupidity.

After all, the three beings once considered to have the most potential to become godlike existences were all killed. This lesson still struck today; it humbled many, especially those belonging to older generations.

For newer generations, though, the classification system was akin to a power system because more often than not, someone of a higher class would beat those of lower classes.

So as Riddick waited, his concern drew from this. It was something that led him to never underestimate his opponents and to always be cautious.

Before long, the sound of the distant engines drew closer and closer. Riddick watched as the counter on his watch for when Jamie's alarm would go off approached zero.

At this point, he could even see dust arise over the walls of the compound's fence.

Riddick firmed the grip on his gun and focused at the gate as the counter reached zero, and he said to himself,

"They're here."
