Afterlife
A sword for the worthy

A sword for the worthy

Morgan left a while ago and Elizabeth just finished cleaning everything up. So far she was probably 15% done with the grinding and engraving of runes. But now with Morgan gone and with no other distractions, Elizabeth would be able to fully focus on her task and utilize all her skills.

Steady Hands

Basic Seamstress skill

Elizabeth stretched her arms and got comfortable, she pulled up her working desk so that it was up to her shoulder when she was sitting down. She put her elbows on the desk and got to work on engraving. As she activated all her skills it was as if the world went completely silent, her eyes zoomed into the runes and she was able to plan out the available surface area.

The runes needed to be spaced so that they didn't cross over and cause characters to misalign, they also needed to be deep enough for her enchantment to settle in without decreasing the sword's weight or causing the blade to become more brittle. From the outside Elizabeth looked like she was moving at times 4 speed, her hands were pushing and releasing with extraordinary dexterity. However to her, she was moving at slow motion, making every movement accurate and deliberate.

Hours flew by and Elizabeth was finished with engraving both sides of the blade, to the untrained eye the blade simply looked like it was scratched up a bit and needed fixing, however Elizabeth could see each of the runes light up with a light orange hue. She circulated her mana and pushed it to her right hand's middle and index fingers. Then she slowly pushed her fingers across the surface of the blade, covering every inch of the engraved runes. After finishing the last couple of letters, the blade flashed in a bright white light and all the runes became infused with a red energy. This meant the runes were completely locked into the blade and could not be scratched or scraped off unless the entire blade shattered. So now obviously, she needed to increase the blade's durability and flexibility.

She prepared a large tank of water long enough to put the entire blade in and set it next to her forge. She then filled the forge with a special fuel, combustium. When untreated, combustium was used for all sorts of explosives. But by treating it with a special chemical, its explosive properties were taken away, all which is left is the extreme heat it gave off. Utilizing a mixture of fire and wind magic, Elizabeth heated the blade up and quenched it in the water repeatedly. With each repetition, the blade's molecular structure became firmer and firmer, she was able to accurately measure the heat so that she didn't accidentally soften the material. A beautiful wavy pattern appeared on the blade as she continued heating and quenching. The color of the blade was a vibrant blue, with the middle of the blade being a slight reddish color. She activated her appraisal skill to look at the stats of the blade.

Eyes of Master Appraisal (Maximum proficiency)

Unfinished Sword

Grade: Masterpiece

Durability: Unbreakable

Currently Unbound to any player

The blade is forged from an alloy of compound mana steel and mithril, allowing it to withstand extreme levels of mana, it will maintain it's sharpness without having to be sharpened or polished. Enchantments on the blade give it many different properties, mostly to help further enhance the material's effects but also increase flexibility and allow the sword to change forms.

Elizabeth was happy she created yet another masterpiece grade weapon, all she needed to do now was to complete sharpening and polishing and attaching the hilt, guard and pommel of the blade. Normally one would have to use many different techniques to connect the pieces together, but with the help of mana threads and metallurgy, she was able to easily connect the pieces together. As they slot together, the entire blade shook slightly and shone with a slightly blue aura. As she held it in her hand she felt her mana freely flowing from her body into the blade.

"Hopefully he's not busy right now"

Elizabeth thought, it was currently around 10am so she Nathan would probably be working at the moment. She decided to just go over to the Hunter's guild's branch office on the 25th floor. If she remembered correctly, he was supposedly organizing a few raids on and was staying here instead of the main office on the 47th floor.

If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

She put on a discreet hoodie and knee braces under her pants. After doing a couple slight squats to make sure the knee braces were comfortable she locked and left the restaurant for the Hunter's guild's branch office.

The branch office was built like a mixture of an inn and an office building, right pass the front door was tables and benches on each side of the building. A blue carpet lead from the door to the front desk where a woman was talking with the man currently on shift. The right side of the room was a large bulletin board full of requests marked on sheets of paper. The left side was a door leading to the training room and other rooms.

"Please Sir! I have important information for the guild master, I promise I won't take long"

A woman was pleading with one of the guild's high rank officials, he seemed slightly angry but mostly annoyed.

"Ma'am, you're going to need to contact us before hand and set up a time before hand. The guild master is very busy and if we let you through we can't justify holding everyone else back"

Elizabeth could tell he's dealt with these situations much too many times, he talked as if reading off from a script. She walked up and waved at him.

"Hey Dean, I'm done with Nathan's sword, he busy?"

Dean turned and faced Elizabeth and smiled

"Oh hey Elizabeth, he wouldn't mind anyways. Just go through that middle door to the left. You wouldn't happen to have some gifts for me too would you?"

Elizabeth smirked

"Oh you wish, you know how possessive he is."

"Yeah yeah, maybe one day he'll bring some of us along to get some food. Now go, he's been excited for a week straight."

Elizabeth smiled and walked to the door to the left, leaving the woman dumbfounded.

"That woman just walked right in, why do I need to reserve a time?"

Dean's tone once again fell to indifference

"I'm sorry Ma'am there isn't anything I can do it is simply the rules."

Elizabeth quietly twisted open the silver door knob and pushed open the dark wood door into the office. Directly ahead was a desk with piles of paperwork, a shield was hung on the wall behind the desk. To the right is a few cabinets and bookshelves filled with many different books and files. To the left was a large leather sofa, where Nathan was currently taking a nap.

"Nathan are you seriously lazing off right now, Scout's going to get angry at you again"

He didn't move an inch, but Elizabeth knew all high rankers have their senses honed to the very extreme and would be able to wake up at any sign of danger. Right now he was simply ignoring him thinking the vice guild master sent her to try and make Nathan get to work. She slowly crept closer, kneeled down and whispered.

"If you don't wake up I'll sell your sword to Dean"

He immediately shot up

"No no I'm awake I'm awake"

Elizabeth smiled and pulled the wrapped sword from her inventory, even through the wrapping the blue aura leaked through. Nathan's eyes bulged in the sockets, he looked like a hungry dog looking at a delicious treat. Except instead of small dog, he was a 7 foot tall massive man.

"Can I see it?"

Nathan could no longer wait, so Elizabeth slowly unwrapped the wrapping. The blade shone as light from the windows reflected off the surface.

"I call it Odin's fury, he won't get mad at me for that right? You're his apostle after all"

"Oh no no, to have a masterpiece named after him would be flattering."

Elizabeth activated her appraisal skill and shared the information with Nathan through the system

Odin's Fury +10

Grade: Masterpiece

Attack: Godlike

Durability: Unbreakable

Strength required: Pinnacle (high)

Skill needed: Warrior - Advanced swordsmanship

Bound to Player Nathaniel Boseman

Proficiency skills:

Dimensional slash: Fatigue +10, by infusing the edge of the blade with high levels of mana, the blade is able to slice through dimension and ignore defenses.

Explosive slice: When at full size, each slice of the blade breaks the sound barrier and creates explosions in the air.

Power Hilt Punch: Fatigue +2, by charging up a punch using the hilt of the sword, the power increases exponentially.

Meteor strike: Fatigue +5, by charging up the vacuum trait of the blade, all nearby magic is absorbed and released in the next attack.

Passive traits:

Vacuum: All physical attacks are attracted towards the blade of this sword, enemies need to use extreme strengths to push their swords on course and cause damage. When infused with enough mana, even magic gets absorbed.

Expansion: As the user inputs their mana into the hilt and through the sword, the size of the blade increases. The blade can go from a normal short sword to a giant great sword. As the blade increases in size, the guard bends towards the hand and makes hilt punches more powerful.

"Oh my god, this is the first time I've seen anything with a +10 enchantment. Not to even mention the Godlike attack and Unbreakable durability. Come on lets test this bad boy."

He basically stumbled off the sofa and dragged Elizabeth out the room into the training room next door. The walls were completely solid black, though the room was well lit with floating orbs of light. At the back of the room was a few archery targets and on either side of the room were training dummies made with a rubbery material.

He held the hilt of the blade and adjusted his grip to comfort. A grin stretched across his face as he swung the sword in its initial state. Each cut created firm lacerations across the dummies, the material slowly mending on it's own.

"Wow it's surprisingly comfortable, usually swords of this size wouldn't fit me very well."

"I made it that size because it's the smallest I could go for it to still be comfortable and usable. If you infuse your mana into your blade it will get bigger, you can also use your special class skills."

His grip tightened around the hilt, his veins flexed as mana coursed through his body and into the sword. The runes on the blade glowed blue as the blade expanded and grew, going from a short sword to a broadsword to a bastard sword and finally a massive great sword. The blade was now as tall as Nathan himself, as wide as the length of his forearm. The air around the blade seemed to pulse as energy radiated off the sword.

He took step forward and performed a basic downward slice, a loud boom echoed in the room and Elizabeth fell backwards from the simple force of the air moving away from the blade.

"Hey man give me a warning first that thing's strong."

She moved back away from the blast radius as Nathan injected more mana and sliced down with as much mana as he could. Yet another loud boom echoed in the room, luckily Elizabeth managed to predict the range of the explosion. In the path of the sword's slice is a space of absolute pitch black, like someone painted out the space and left it empty. After a few seconds the space around the darkness folded inward and filled it in.

"Oh my god, what was that. That was so cool, it doesn't even take that much mana."

"You're only saying that because your intelligence stat is pinnacle high, you don't need to have to blade go full size every time. If you practice enough you can get used to all of the different sizes."

"Does it only get bigger? Can it like change to other weapons too if I form the mana instead of just injecting it?"

"It only expands right now, I doubt there's a material which is that malleable yet durable. If you do come across something like that though please let me play around with it a bit"

Nathan ran over and picked Elizabeth in a hug with a childish excitement, she winced as his thick arms wrapped around her and twirled her around.

"Thank you so much for this, I'll pay you back somehow."

"Ow okay, don't worry about it. If you want to pay me back, help me finish the construction of the top floor. I'm a little tired now so I'll head back"

He slowly placed her down, she stumbled a bit and sat down on the floor. She reached down to readjust her knee braces.

"You need some work on your self control, now go and finish your work, I don't want Scout to be mad at me. If you're good and manage to finish your work I'll make you some drinks"

She smiled and picked herself up, waving goodbye as she walked out the training room door and left.
