(This isn't neccessary to read and is almost completely inconsequential to the story which will appear much more light-hearted without this chapter. I put this here because people don't usually read the pre-chapter note)
I died. That’s all I could think as my body floated in the endless glass-void. Without concepts of time or gravity my understanding of reality seemed to waver and my mind became weak. After what seemed like an eternity or perhaps a single second, my eyes drew towards an energy within the void.
God had come for me. I didn’t know how I knew, only that this energy was in fact God. “You have died and now your time to be reborn has come.” I nodded in acceptance, after all, to question God’s word is to deny reality isn’t it?
...But my human curiosity got the better of me, and forced me to ask why, without knowing what consequences may occur.

God: “Why are you being reborn?” I nodded. “That is the way of the world.” I nodded in understanding and waited for God to tell me my purpose. God seemed to be amused by that notion. “I do not grant purpose mortal, I only give you the ability to take it for yourself.”
God: “You will be reborn in a world of sword and magic, one inspired by the fantasy of your past life. In this world, I will grant you one familiar of your wish, and your powers will follow the theme of your chosen vassal. In this world you can easily be a special existence, if you so wish.”
“God, forgive my impudence but why me? To grant me this special gift, what makes me so special?” I asked even if the answer was obvious. He had told me before after all. I could feel God smile.
God: “Nothing. You are no more special than the last creature reborn in this same world, or the creature before that. But that does not need to be your truth. Even if you are a useless cog in an endless machine, if you feel that you fit inside, then you do. Only you can make yourself special, and only you can bring about your own change.”
“Thank you.” God nodded. “What makes mortals special is their desire, so choose that which you want the most.” And suddenly, I was no longer in that white void.
