Prolog

Kate stirred to the soft sounds of a nearby horse neighing. Her senses slowly awakened to the world around her. Opening her eyes, she felt a Groggy and disoriented wash over her. The world seemed to spin for a moment before slowly coming into focus. Blinking away the remnants of sleep, she pushed herself off the carriage cushion, her fingers grasping the worn wooden blinds. She slowly opened them with a creak, allowing the morning light to flood into the cramped space.

Hissing softly, Kate shielded her eyes, feeling them blink with small tears. As her vision adjusted to the light, she sensed the warmth of the morning sun on her skin. The sound of a door opening beside her drew her attention, and she tensed, muscles tightening with anticipation.

The sudden movement of weight shifted beside her, sharpening Kate's senses. She turned her head slightly, squinting against the brightness to see the outline of a man leaning towards her. His deep voice broke the morning silence, rough with sleep.

"I see you're finally awake," he said.

Kate nodded, her throat dry as she struggled to find her voice. "Yes, I... I suppose I am," she replied, her words a hoarse whisper.

The figure moved closer, revealing the form of a slightly tall, older gentleman, his features weathered by time. Lines etched deep into his face spoke of a life lived, of untold stories and experiences. He reached for a waterskin at his waist, unhooking the wooden cork. Kate watched as he handed it to her, noticing the worn leather and patches adorning it.

Taking the waterskin, Kate sniffed it carefully, her senses on high alert. The familiar scent of water tinged with earthy undertones tickled the back of her mind, stirring distant memories.

Closing her eyes, she took another deep sniff, allowing the aroma to envelop her senses. Suddenly, it clicked. The scent wasn't just familiar—it was a memory from her childhood, a distant echo of days spent exploring fields and forests. A woman's distant voice echoed in her memory until it disappeared altogether.

"My name is Samuel," the older man said, settling into the carriage and closing the door behind him.

"Where are we, Samuel?" Kate asked, uncertainty lacing her voice.

Samuel settled into the worn cushions, his gaze thoughtful as he considered her question. "We're on the outskirts of Oakridge Farm," he replied, his voice steady. "A small, quiet place nestled in the hills, far from the city's hustle and bustle. We're gathering supplies for our journey to Eldoria, home of the Magic Academy."

Kate nodded, taking in her surroundings with a mixture of awe and trepidation. The carriage, though cozy, bore signs of wear and tear, a testament to its travels. Outside, the rhythmic clip-clop of hooves echoed on the dirt path as they ventured forward.

Glancing out the window, Kate watched as the scenery changed from rolling hills to dense forests, the towering trees casting dappled shadows across the dirt path. The air was alive with the sounds of chirping birds and the rustle of leaves of small wildlife running across tree branches, a symphony of nature that seemed to beckon her.

Beside her, Samuel sat with a calm demeanour, his weathered features bathed in sunlight streaming through the carriage windows. Samuel reached into a nearby carriage compartment and pulled out a stack of leather-bound books and a set of flowing robes, their fabric shimmering with intricate blank white patterns.

"Here are the essentials for the Academy, your books and robes," he said, his voice tinged with exhaustion.

Kate's eyes sparkled with anticipation as she received the books and robes, a tangible reminder of the journey ahead. But amidst her excitement, a nagging feeling of something forgotten tugged at her mind.

"And these robes," Samuel continued, holding out the flowing garments, "will mark you as a student of the Academy. Wear them with pride. As you learn you're magical, the blank markings will slowly turn into your elemental colour.

Kate nodded, her heart pounding with excitement at the prospect of joining the ranks of the Academy's scholars and wizards. She took the books and robes from Samuel, but then she stopped remembering that memory of something forgotten.

"Samuel," Kate began, uncertain of how to voice her concerns.

Samuel turned to her, his expression gentle yet curious, inviting her to share her thoughts.

"It's just... I have no memory from my past," Kate confessed, her voice tinged with worry.

Samuel's understanding gaze offered her comfort. "Memories can be elusive," he reassured her, "but they don't define who you are."

Though reassured, Kate couldn't shake the lingering worry. "But what if there's something important in my past that I need to remember?" she asked.

Samuel's gaze held hers, "Perhaps there is," he acknowledged. "but dwelling on what we cannot remember will only hold us back. What matters is the person you are now and the journey you choose to embark upon."

Kate took a deep breath, letting his words sink in. She knew he was right. The past may hold mysteries, but her focus was on the present and the adventures that awaited her in Eldoria.

As the carriage continued its journey, Kate felt a sense of determination settle within her. Whatever challenges and discoveries lay ahead, she was ready to embrace them with courage and curiosity.

Perhaps, she thought, she would seek her past when the time was right. But for now, her focus was on the journey ahead.

Deep within the depths of a cave, a stone structure rumbled to life, its ancient mechanisms stirring with a faint, golden glow. The dim but bright light flickered on, casting shadows on the rough-hewn walls and illuminating the cavern with a promise of hope.

But amidst the glow, a discordant sound echoed through the chamber. "System error," it buzzed, the words distorted and fragmented as if struggling to break free from the cave's confines.

"Sy3tem eeeor," it repeated, the message growing more erratic with each repetition. The system was faltering, its once steady operations now unraveling before it.

The air crackled with tension within the cave's depths as the system's malfunction threatened to cascade into chaos. The golden light wavered, casting eerie shadows that danced along the cavern floor.
