Chatper Four: interface and the city of Eldoria

Kate awoke feeling dizzy and tired, her head spinning with disorientation. She blinked several times, trying to clear the fog from her mind, and slowly surveyed her surroundings. The room was dimly lit, with the soft glow of candlelight casting long shadows on the walls. kate noticed something odd, at the bottom of her eye view were three dots blinking.

kate blinked her eyes and then focused on the wired symbol.

Kate blinked repeatedly, trying to clear her vision, but the error-filled system box remained, hovering persistently in her line of sight. Rubbing her eyes proved futile as the strange display continued to obscure her view. A mixture of panic and curiosity surged through her as she stared at the blinking symbols and error messages.

"What is this?" she muttered, her mind still clouded with dizziness. The flickering candlelight in the dimly lit room only added to the surreal nature of her situation.

Instinct urged her to find someone who could explain what was happening. She carefully opened the door, using the wall for support as she made her way downstairs. The voices and the sound of a crackling fire offered a semblance of normalcy that she desperately needed.

Kate walked down the hallway, the candle flames casting dancing shadows on the walls. She glanced again at the strange display, trying to make sense of the jumbled information. Magical Sense? Enhanced Agility? Heightened Senses? Healing Factor? It all sounded fantastical, yet somehow fitting given her bizarre circumstances.

"Kate, you're awake!" a voice called out, breaking her train of thought.

She turned to see a young noble boy standing in a doorway behind her, his face a mix of relief and concern.

"Are you alright? You look like you've seen a ghost," he said, stepping closer.

"I... I don't know," Kate replied, her voice shaky. "I woke up feeling dizzy and tired, and now I keep seeing this strange error message in front of my eyes."

The boy's brow furrowed. "Strange error message? What do you mean?"

Kate hesitated, unsure of how to explain. "It's like a system box, with details about me and my abilities. It says there are errors and that unauthorized access was detected. I don't understand any of it."

The boy's expression shifted from confusion to understanding. "It sounds like you've gained access to your interface. It's rare, but not unheard of."

"Interface?" Kate echoed, struggling to grasp the concept.

"Yes," the boy nodded. "It's a manifestation of your latent magical abilities. It helps you understand and control your powers. However, it often malfunctions, so most people who encounter it choose to ignore it."

"Oh, I hadn't introduced myself," he continued. "My name is Ethan Carlisle. You saved me back in the village."

Kate's eyes widened in recognition. "Ethan Carlisle... I remember you. You're the one I hid in that crack in the wall. I'm Kate Winters."

Ethan smiled warmly. "It's good to meet you officially, Kate. And thank you," he said, a hint of red in his cheeks.

Kate managed a small smile in return. "I'm just glad you're safe. It's been such a strange experience."

Ethan gestured towards the stairs. As they carefully descended, the comforting sounds of a crackling fire and murmured conversation grew louder. The warmth of the room below contrasted with the chill in the air, wrapping Kate in a sense of safety she hadn't felt in days.

Martha looked up as they entered, her eyes lighting up with relief. "Kate, you're up! How are you feeling?"

"Better," Kate replied. She still felt a stiffness in her body, but the warmth of the fire was helping.

Kate took a glance at Martha, who was a middle-aged woman with a warm and welcoming presence. Her chestnut brown hair, streaked with silver, was neatly tied back in a bun, with a few loose tendrils framing her kind face.

She had laugh lines around her eyes and mouth, a testament to her cheerful and hospitable nature. Martha was of medium height, with a sturdy build that reflected her hardworking lifestyle. She often wore simple, practical clothing—long skirts and blouses in earthy tones, covered by an apron adorned with pockets filled with various small items she might need throughout her busy day.

Martha's Inn was a reflection of her personality: cozy, welcoming, and well-kept. The common room where Kate found herself was filled with rustic wooden furniture, a roaring fireplace that cast a warm glow, and shelves lined with books and trinkets collected over the years. The aroma of home-cooked meals often filled the air, adding to the inn's inviting atmosphere. Martha's gentle demeanour and attentive care made her a beloved figure among the inn's regular patrons and a comforting presence for new arrivals like Kate.

Above the bar where Martha usually resided hung an old-looking longsword, damaged with half of the blade missing. It was a reminder of battles long past and hinted at a side of Martha that her guests seldom saw.

"Come sit down, child. You must still be quite worn out; you still look pale," Martha said as she walked over with a wooden tankard, gesturing for Kate to sit in the chair by the fire.

"Thank you," Kate murmured, easing into the chair.

"Now, now, no need to thank me. It's the least I could do after hearing what you did," Martha said, pressing the drink into Kate's hands.

Kate gratefully took the tankard, feeling the warmth of the drink seep into her fingers. She took a cautious sip, the rich, soothing flavour spreading through her body and helping to ease her lingering dizziness.

Ethan took a seat across from Kate, his eyes filled with curiosity and concern. "Do you remember anything more about what happened, Kate?" he asked gently.

Kate shook her head, her brow furrowed. "It's all still a blur. I remember running, and then... the creature. But after that, everything is hazy."

Martha placed a comforting hand on Kate's shoulder. "Don't push yourself too hard, dear. Your memories of that event will come back in time. For now, just focus on resting and recovering." Kate nodded.

"Where are Mia and the others from the caravan?" Kate asked, looking around the inn.

"They left a day ago," Martha replied. "Since you were in such bad condition, Samuel stopped here to let them regather their supplies and drop you three off." She turned to look at Ethan. "This young man wanted to stay and look after you. Oh my, that was quite a fight with his parents," she added with a smirk, sipping her tea.

kate smiled glad that Mia was now safe and sound, kate hoped one day soon she meet her again. A small smile played at her lips as she drank some of her tea, the warmth a welcoming confect.

Later that evening, as Kate lay in bed, she couldn't help but think about the urgent quest and what it might mean for her future. The mysterious system box still hovered in her vision, pulsing now and then with the prompt: 'Do you accept Y/N?'

Kate took a deep breath and, with resolve, whispered, "Yes."

The next morning, sunlight streamed through the window, casting a warm glow across the room. Kate stretched, feeling well-rested. She dressed in her simple yet practical attire and made her way downstairs, the wooden steps creaking softly beneath her feet.

Martha was already bustling about, preparing breakfast. The aroma of freshly baked bread and sizzling bacon, Eggs filled the air, making Kate's stomach growl. Samuel sat at a table, studying a map spread out before him. Beside him was Ethan too, who looked up with a friendly smile when he saw her.

"Good morning, Kate," Ethan greeted warmly. "Feeling better today?"

"Much better, thank you," Kate replied, sitting across from them.

"I've been mapping out our route. It will be a few days' journey from here, but the path is well-traveled and relatively safe only issue is that we be going though the duiud forest," Samuel said, leaning in, his brow furrowed with thought. "We'll need to make sure we have enough supplies. The last stretch before Eldoria can be a bit sparse on resources."

Martha approached with a plate of food, setting it down in front of Kate. "Eat up, dear. You'll need your strength for the journey ahead."

This narrative has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. If you see it on Amazon, please report it.

Kate nodded gratefully and began to eat, savoring the warmth and comfort of the meal. "Thank you, Martha. For everything."

Martha smiled and patted her shoulder. "It's no trouble at all, Kate. Just promise me you'll be careful."

"We will," Ethan assured her. "We'll make sure to stay alert and stick to the main roads."

After breakfast, they gathered their belongings and made final preparations. As Kate packed her bag, she carefully retrieved her school robes and books. While organizing her things, she came across a silver necklace with a rough scale at its centre, hidden in her leather backpack.

Picking it up, she placed it in her palm and felt a wave of sadness wash over her. Taking a deep breath, she unhooked the clasp and wrapped it around her neck, where it settled just above her chest.

Martha stood at the door, waving them off with a mixture of pride and concern. "Safe travels, all of you."

"I will, Martha. Thank you," Kate said, hugging her tightly before stepping outside.

Kate, Ethan, and Samuel stepped outside into the crisp morning air. The sun was climbing higher in the sky, casting a warm glow over the landscape. The trio adjusted their packs and began their journey down the road, leaving the inn behind.

The path to Eldoria was well-traveled but not without its challenges. As they walked, they passed through dense forests, rolling hills, and small villages. The beauty of the landscape was marred by Kate’s constant worry about the urgent quest and the mysterious system she now had access to.

“Tell me more about this system, Ethan” Kate whispered, breaking the silence as they navigated a narrow forest trail. “How does it work?”

Ethan glanced at her, then at Samuel noticing he was a bit ahead of them, before replying. “The system is like a magical interface that helps you, to understand and manage your abilities. people use to have access it to, all over, but only the century less and less people gained access to it, and those who did still had access or gain it started to notice it was malfunctioning, but over the centuries usually reserved for advanced magicians, but it seems you’ve been given access early for some reason.”

Kate nodded thoughtfully. “And this quest to restore the world system’s integrity… What do you think it means?”

“It’s hard to say. The world system could be anything from the balance of magical energies to the fabric of reality itself. If it’s malfunctioning, it could explain a lot of the strange occurrences we’ve been noticing lately.”

They continued walking in silence, each lost in their thoughts. As they approached a small clearing, the peaceful atmosphere was shattered by the sound of rustling in the bushes. The trio tensed, preparing for whatever might emerge.

A group of bandits burst from the undergrowth, brandishing crude weapons. “Hand over your valuables and no one gets hurt!” their leader snarled.

Samuel stepped forward, his hand on the hilt of his sword “We don’t want any trouble. Let us pass and we’ll forget this encounter.”

The bandit leader laughed, his voice echoing through the clearing. "You old fool, there are seven of us and only three of you. You really think you can take us on?"

Samuel sighed, his expression one of weary resignation. He knelt down, his hand brushing the ground as he gathered a handful of small pebbles. The bandits watched him with a mix of curiosity and amusement, clearly underestimating the seasoned warrior before them.

"Last warning," Samuel said, his voice steady and calm. "Allow us to pass peacefully, or face the consequences." His eyes darted to each bandit, mentally marking their positions and assessing the threat they posed.

The bandit leader sneered, clearly unimpressed. "Big words for an old man with a handful of rocks. Get 'em, boys!"

The bandits lunged forward, weapons raised and eyes gleaming with malicious intent. Samuel's grip tightened around the pebbles, his movements fluid and precise. With a swift, practiced motion, he flung the pebbles into the air. For a moment, they seemed to defy gravity, suspended in mid-air before accelerating towards their targets with unnerving precision.

Each pebble found its mark with deadly accuracy, striking the bandits in vulnerable spots—eyes, throats, and pressure points. Cries of pain and surprise erupted as the bandits stumbled and fell, clutching at their injuries. One of the pebbles struck a bandit square in the forehead, leaving a crimson trail as his eyes rolled back and he collapsed to the ground.

With a determined look, Samuel surged forward, his movements a blur. His sword flashed in the dappled sunlight, cutting through the air with lethal efficiency. He parried an incoming strike from a bandit, sidestepping and delivering a swift riposte that left his attacker crumpled on the ground. Another bandit charged, but Samuel deftly sidestepped, delivering a devastating kick that sent the bandit sprawling.

Kate and Ethan watched in awe as Samuel moved through the bandits like a whirlwind, his every action calculated and precise. They could hardly believe the level of skill and control he exhibited.

One of the bandits, braver or perhaps more foolish than the others, attempted a desperate lunge at Samuel. Samuel met him with a cold, unwavering gaze, deflecting the attack with his sword and driving the hilt into the bandit's face. The man dropped to his knees, blood streaming from his nose and mouth.

Samuel's eyes locked onto the bandit leader, who stood frozen in shock at the decimation of his crew. Samuel closed the distance in a heartbeat, his boot connecting with the leader's chest in a powerful kick that sent him sprawling to the ground. Samuel stood over him, the tip of his sword pressing against the man's throat, a thin line of blood trickling down.

"Last chance," Samuel growled, his voice low and menacing. "Allow us to pass peacefully, or I will gut you like a deer."

The bandit leader, his bravado shattered by the sheer display of skill and power, hesitated. He glanced around at his fallen comrades, the realization dawning on him that they were no match for this seasoned warrior. His eyes met Samuel's, and he saw no mercy there.

"Fall back!" he barked, his voice trembling with fear and anger. He glared at Samuel, Kate, and Ethan, committing their faces to memory with a promise of future retribution. Then, without another word, he scrambled to his feet and retreated into the forest, his remaining men following in his wake. The clearing fell eerily silent, the only sounds the ragged breaths of the injured and the rustling of leaves.

Samuel sheathed his sword, his expression unchanged by the violence he had just unleashed. "Amateurs," he muttered, shaking his head in disdain.

Kate let out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding. "That was... incredible," she said, her voice tinged with a mix of relief and admiration.

Ethan nodded, his expression serious. "Yes, that was incredible."

"We can't afford to let our guard down. There will be more dangers ahead, especially as we get closer to Eldoria," Samuel said, rubbing his hands together.

Kate and Ethan took a moment to gather themselves, the adrenaline still coursing through their veins. Samuel inspected his companions, ensuring they were unhurt before they resumed their journey.

As they traveled, they encountered more signs of unrest—villages with crops blighted by strange diseases, forests where the very air seemed to hum with unease. It became clear that whatever was wrong with the world system, its effects were widespread and growing.

One afternoon, as they made their way through a particularly dense forest, they heard a rustling in the bushes. They tensed, ready for another encounter with bandits, but instead, a group of travelers emerged. They looked weary and bedraggled, their clothes torn and faces smudged with dirt.

"Help us," one of them pleaded, his voice hoarse. "Our village... it's been overrun by creatures. We barely escaped with our lives."

Ethan stepped forward, his expression grim. "What kind of creatures?"

The man shook his head, his eyes wide with fear. "I don't know. They came out of nowhere, attacking everything in sight. They're like nothing we've ever seen before."

Samuel nodded. "We'll help you. Show us the way."

The travelers led them to a nearby village, or what was left of it. The buildings were in ruins, smoke rising from smoldering fires. The ground was littered with debris, and the air was thick with the stench of decay. Kate's heart sank at the sight.

They cautiously made their way through the village, alert for any signs of danger. Suddenly, a guttural roar echoed through the streets, and a hulking creature emerged from the shadows. It was a grotesque amalgamation of flesh and metal, its eyes glowing with a malevolent light.

Ethan raised his hands, preparing a spell, while Samuel drew his sword. Kate grabbed her rusty iron pointer. The creature charged, and the battle began.

The fight was brutal, each blow resonating with the clash of magic and steel. The creature was relentless, its movements swift and deadly. But Kate, Ethan, and Samuel fought with a unity born of necessity, their combined efforts finally bringing the beast down.

As the creature fell, a strange energy seeped from its body, dissipating into the air. The village fell silent once more, the echoes of the battle lingering in the stillness.

Kate wiped the sweat from her brow, her heart still pounding. "What was that thing?"

Ethan shook his head. "I don't know."

Samuel sheathed his sword, his expression resolute. "We need to get to Eldoria as soon as possible."

They helped the surviving villagers, offering what aid they could before continuing their journey.

As they pressed on, the road to Eldoria seemed longer and more treacherous. The landscape was lush and green, with birds singing in the trees and a gentle breeze rustling the leaves. The beauty of their surroundings was a stark contrast to the tension that lingered from their recent encounters. Despite the peaceful scenery, an undercurrent of urgency and unease permeated the group.

As dusk approached, they reached a small village nestled in a valley. The village was quaint, with cobblestone streets and thatched-roof cottages. The locals eyed them curiously but offered friendly nods and smiles. The trio made their way to the village inn, a cozy establishment with a warm glow emanating from its windows.

The innkeeper, a stout man with a bushy beard, greeted them with a hearty laugh. "Welcome, travelers! You look like you've had a long journey. Come in, come in. We've got food and warm beds waiting for you."

They gratefully accepted his hospitality, shedding their packs and settling into a corner table in the common room. The inn was bustling with activity, locals sharing stories and laughter over hearty meals. The atmosphere was comforting, a brief respite from the road.

Kate, still awed by Samuel's earlier display of skill, couldn't contain her curiosity any longer. "Samuel," she began hesitantly, "I've never seen anyone fight like that before. You moved so quickly, and those pebbles... how did you do that? What kind of warrior are you?"

Samuel chuckled as the waiter set down their drinks, looking up with a small smile. "I'm a Spellsword, Kate."

"Spellsword?" she repeated, the unfamiliar term piquing her interest. "What does that mean?"

"It means I combine magic with my sword skills," Samuel explained. "I use spells to enhance my combat abilities, whether it's controlling objects like those pebbles or enhancing my speed and reflexes."

Kate's eyes widened with newfound admiration. "So, you're both a mage and a warrior?"

"Exactly," Samuel nodded. "The key is to balance the two, using magic to complement my physical skills. It's a versatile way of fighting, allowing me to adapt to different situations on the battlefield."

"That sounds amazing," Kate said, her voice filled with wonder. "I had no idea such a thing was possible."

Samuel chuckled softly. "With enough training and dedication, many things are possible, Kate. Perhaps one day, you'll find your unique way to combine your talents."

Their food arrived: steaming bowls of stew, crusty bread, and mugs of ale. They ate in companionable silence, the events of the day weighing heavily on their minds. After their meal, they retired to their room, each lost in their thoughts as they prepared for bed.

Kate lay on her cot, staring at the ceiling. The silver necklace with the rough scale rested against her chest. She kept a hand on it, feeling the rough scale and warm metal. As she drifted off to sleep, her thoughts were filled with the day's battles and the challenges yet to come.

The next morning, they rose early, eager to continue their journey. The sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon, casting a golden glow over the village. After thanking the innkeeper for his hospitality, they set off once more.

As the sun climbed higher on their final day, Samuel reached the top of a hill and looked back towards Kate and Ethan.

"You guys should hurry and see this view," he called, a hint of a smile on his face.

Ethan, climbing ahead, reached the peak before Kate.

As Kate ascended the last few steps, panting, she looked up in awe at the sight before her.

The city of Eldoria spread out in all its splendour, its majestic towers and bustling streets bathed in the golden morning light. Just beyond the city, the Grand Academy of Magic stood proudly, one of the most prestigious schools of magic in the kingdom.
