To Grant a Wish

To Grant a Wish

The pitiful, the weak, those who cannot create an opportunity for themselves, and those who have gained the envy of another. These are the people, whose despair, and pain radiate in an almost palpable wave across the lands, resonating and attracting. Creatures like the Algae, the Dolor, might swarm those whose misery isn’t as strong. If the negative emotions grow more potent, then that individual might attract the attention of a deity like Oizys or Miseria. But for those whose pain threatens to overwhelm them, they might attract the attention of a different type.

There exist beings of unfathomable power, able to bend reality to the whim of mortals they attach themselves to. Bestowing gifts and blessings that cannot be compared and are desired by all. Rather than attaching themselves to those in despair to feed off of their emotions or to strengthen themselves, these entities grant wishes and bestow gifts upon their chosen ones, effectively eliminating any negativity they initially had.

But it never lasts, the gifts and blessings they grant are always temporary, dwindling and fading away at a designated time or being broken by an outside force. And for those individuals who have only ever known pain, losing the gifts is a devastating blow, and can easily send them into a depressive spiral, one they might not recover from. In this instance, the gift-granting entity might give their target another boon, once again halting the onslaught of negative emotions and bringing forth positivity. And then the cycle repeats, gifts and happiness, followed by despair, followed by yet another gift. Again, and again the pattern repeats, until the very end, the entity’s target archives a source of happiness that isn’t reliant on the wishes it grants. That or the source of their despair has been rendered obsolete. Then, and only then, will the whish-granting entity disappear, following the ripples back to a different source of anguish and sorrow, to repeat the cycle of emotional highs and drops, over and over again.

These entities, while appearing benevolent, are entirely malevolent. Enjoying the fluctuating emotions, they cause in their targets. The rapid accents followed by the destructive- and oftentimes harmful- descent are addictive to them. Becoming their targets' only source of hope, and at the same time, a blockade to their happiness.

Beware of those gift granters, who come offering wishes and blessings, for the payment they seek will only lead to a miserable trek to the end goal. They go by many names, but the most common one they go by is-………………Aaah, look, here comes one now, targeting a young woman. Look at her, covered in soot, dust, and tears.

“Poor child. Tell me, what is your name?”

“C-Cinderella. Who are you?”

“Oh, no one special, just call me your Fairy Godmother”
