A Thin Line
Out of the rabbit hole (Prologue)

Out of the rabbit hole (Prologue)

On a desert island, a white rabbit was happily jumping around, not at all worried about his surroundings. The islet was really small and the rabbit had explored it from start to finish, so he was sure there was nothing that could threaten him.

Suddenly something fell from the sky, landing on the sand next to him with a thud and almost hitting him. "There you go, I let down my guard and now I'm gonna get eaten by some big bird of prey." thought the rabbit, or at least so it seemed from the huge leap he made after hearing the sound. The rabbit gained a certain distance and remained on alert for a few seconds, but after a while, he was pretty sure nothing was following him; so he took courage and, with a perplexed expression (which is the standard expression of all rabbits), he began advancing towards the mysterious object that didn't seem interested in eating him.

The object was round, brown, and hairy: a coconut. The rabbit inspected it and, after looking up, realized that the object must've come from the big palm tree at the center of the island. Based on its appearance, its smell, and its origin, the rabbit was able to conclude that it must've been some kind of fruit; how ironic, he was afraid that the object would try and eat him, but as it turns out it was nothing but food served to him on a silver plate. Immediately the rabbit started working on opening the coconut using one of the biggest gifts mother nature had given him: his powerful incisors. After trying for about an hour he was forced to realize that mother nature wasn't gonna help him out of this situation, and instantly started searching around him for an alternative source of sustenance; the island had no grass at all, and the only plant there was the palm tree, of which the fruit had too hard of a shell and the leaves were too high.

Once the islet was excluded the only place where some food could have been was the surrounding ocean; with this thought, the rabbit looked at the horizon, and for the first time since he was mysteriously transported from his hole to this island he started to think that maybe it was time to worry. Just then, he noticed something in the water, something yellow, that was being pushed by the waves towards the island. The rabbit was many things, but he was not impatient, so he stood still waiting for the yellow object to reach land for what to him seemed like a few minutes, but for a person would've seemed like 3 hours, and finally the current gently placed the object on the sand. It was yellow, it had an acidic yet inviting smell, and it looked more like a fruit than the coconut did: it was a lemon. The rabbit tried again with the same approach that had brought him nothing but failure before, and this time he met success after just about a minute, and his mouth was flooded with the most sour taste he had ever encountered; he asked himself if the fruit was unripe and for a moment worried about its edibility, but after a few second of pondering he concluded that there was no better alternative; even if the fruit would've probably made him sick, he needed the sustenance that it could've provided.

After eating about half of the lemon, the rabbit felt pretty full and hydrated, so he decided to leave the rest for the next time he would've gotten hungry again; he then heard a strong rumble and instinctively looked up to the sky. The rabbit was a creature who lived in absolutes, and after a single look at the clouds he was absolutely certain that it was going to start raining soon; he went under the palm tree, the only semblance of a shelter available on the island, and, since he was feeling pretty tired, he decided to fall asleep.

When he woke up the rain had stopped and it was daytime again, but that was not the first thing he noticed; his body felt weird and really heavy, so he moved his head and opened his eyes, and he looked at himself in a way his body had never permitted him to. Was this how he always looked like, he wondered for a second, only to conclude that no, of course it wasn't: he used to have hair all over his body, and he was now practically hairless, his torso was longer than before and his arms were just way too large for his standards, he didn't know where to put them; he had five fingers in both his hands, five fingers on both his feet and his ears were way shorter. Only two feelings were inside of him at the time: the first was an (understandable) confusion, and the second was something he had never experienced before:

doubt that maybe he was just imagining things.
