A New Hunger
Chapter 1

Chapter 1

A scenic ocean view lays bare beneath the winding mountain road. A lone car travels along the road dancing from lane to lane. Intoxication filled the driver as a bottle of almost empty whiskey slid across the floor leaking its amber contents. Roads never truly remain empty just as no one ever remains pure. The purity of the scenic view was violated by a sudden crash with an oncoming vehicle. Glass erupted from windows like fireworks. A single human body was ejected from the victimized car. The chance of a seatbelt failure not only happening but leading to a death is 0.013%. A young woman with a bright smile was gone now. A happy life twisted into a sad statistic. Her partner an unconscious lad was slumped over his steering wheel. The sound of the horn continuously blared from his weight.

This horrific tragedy was common on the dilapidated streets of America. Roads so unkempt they almost begged cars to hit each other. However, this day the fault was that of a man who drank and then got behind the wheel turning a transportation machine into a vehicle of murder. Gasps of air struggled to inflate compressed lungs as if trying to breath in while someone presses against your chest with all their weight. Blood was spilling from the body as it took one ragged breath after another. A beautiful, serene, and haunting visage was all that remained in front of this young woman’s eyes as she took those last breathes. A life cut short. Nothing new. As one door closes another opens or at the very least that’s what many are told. The door of life closed, and the door of death was fast opening. Moments before it opened it was slammed shut. A life was now in a state of stasis. It is in this place in this state that a new life path is born but not for the one in this state but for another.

Three strangers descended upon the accident with the presence of angels but an intent more like demons. Trotting through the glass filled road barefoot. Each one brimming with a vile hunger for human blood and flesh. A sickening cannibalistic image floods the mind as all three strangers were certainly of human guise. One grabbed the drunkard and began to devour him. It was like taking a bite out of a juicy steak. Blood flooded out as a gravy enhancing every bite. The drunkard struggled as more and more of his body was shoved into the maw of a hungry predator that resembled a modern-day Viking. The drunkard mustered all the strength he had to punch the man feasting on his flesh. It proved fruitless. His arm broke as he collided with the stone hard body of the stranger. The stranger chuckled with guttural glee as his muscular frame, the spitting image of a living marble statue of a Viking warrior bulged with each chuckle.

Another of the three bounded towards the car. A silence fell over the scene. The man slumped against the horn was pulled from the wreckage. Snatched up like a baby bird from the nest. A life so precariously dangled in the hands of a flippant predator. He began to smile at the baby bird he was soon to devour. Clotted droplets of blood sprayed from the young man’s mouth in a crimson mist.

“This one is not close to death like the rest” The second stranger spoke with a restrained French accent.

The third stranger looked over at the first who was gorging himself. She tilted her head as she heard the smallest breath of air escape the girl’s mouth. A deep exasperated sigh rushed out her mouth. Her prey was still able to be rescued.

“Yes. So is mine” Her voice echoed as if three females spoke in unison.

“Can we eat them?” The second stranger asked as he began to bare down on the young man in his clutches.

“NO!” The first stranger roared as he threw the drunkard or rather what remained of him between the two “Eat that! We don’t have permission to hunt here.”

The woman’s bright cherry blossom pink hair swayed as she turned to the third stranger. Their eyes met. Two beasts forced to share a poultry meal. The third stranger dropped the young man and walked over to the dead body ripping an arm off.

“I need to cut back anyways” He jested as he began to tear into the arm like a drumstick.

“Alright I will take the rest and then we can leave” The woman sounded resigned to her share of the meal.

“Please help” Came the ragged voice of the young man through gasps of air struggling to inflate his blood-filled lungs.

The three stopped and looked at him furious. How dare a simple piece of meat request anything of the superior beings who stood before it.

“Please” He pleaded again tears pouring from his eyes as he dragged his body through the glass laden road.

The loud sound of teeth being kissed resounded as the first stranger glared at the young man.

“You are only alive because we don’t want to incur the wrath of the old man but do not test me” He berated the young man who continued to plead

The young man kept crawling as he watched the young woman he loved breathe for the last time. Her chest went up and as it came down it stood still. The door of death opened as she was ushered in. The cherry blossom haired woman stood over him and leaned in. Her face was covered in the blood and bits of the drunkard.

“Would you like us to save her?” She smiled sinisterly as she pulled his heart strings.

Putting every bit of energy he had, to look up at her he saw the truth in her eyes. She was offering the impossible but clearly, she believed it. Her cold dead eyes glimmered an inhumanly red color. The devil danced on her tongue as she asked again.

“Yes please” He begged as he resigned his soul to this she-devil.

She walked over to the girl and raised her pointer finger. Her nail morphed into a long black needle like claw. A large pop and then a sudden wet gushing sound erupted as she stabbed the claw into the young woman’s chest. The girl’s chest heaved up and down in rapid succession as she gasped for air. The other two looked at each other then began to rush the pink haired woman. The first stranger grabbed her hand and pulled her finger free.

“We cannot make another!” He roared like a tiger protecting its territory.

“I was only bringing her back. Nothing more.” She laughed as her three toned voice melded together for just a second.

The young woman was heaving and coughing as her body was shocked back to a status among the living. The door of life flung open, and she was unable to escape it, she was so alive. She tried to move when she saw the young man crying and smiling his face which had become a bloody mess.

“See. She is alive” The pink haired woman pulled her hand free and walked over to the boy “in exchange I want to eat you”

The lightbulb burnt out as she bared her fangs down on the young man. The menace she would have inflicted wasted. Sleeping contently with the relief washing over him. A lamb laying upon clouds as a black winged angel scooped him up.

“Let us go before rescue shows up” The modern-day Viking boomed as he turned towards the forest that laid bare beneath the road.

“But of course” Agreeing with him the woman gleefully shifted the weight of the young man on her shoulder. He would be at least 185 pounds and yet she moved him around like he was a common kindergartner’s backpack.

“Can we not just take the woman as well?” The third questioned.

“No. She must be left behind. Now we leave” Upon those words the three leapt off the side of the mountain.
