Chapter 45: The Crystal Forest
The crystal forest stretched endlessly around Ning Feng and Luo Bing, a mesmerizing labyrinth of shimmering light and translucent beauty. Each tree was a marvel of natural architecture, their trunks smooth and glass-like, refracting light into a dazzling array of colors. The branches reached out in delicate arcs, supporting leaves that seemed to be made of the finest crystal, catching and scattering light in a thousand directions.
As they walked, the ground beneath their feet glowed with a faint, ethereal luminescence. It was covered in a thick, moss-like substance that provided a soft, almost spongy surface to walk on. The moss was a brilliant shade of green, but interspersed with patches that glowed in blues, purples, and pinks, creating an otherworldly carpet that complemented the dazzling display above.
The air in the forest was cool and crisp, carrying a hint of sweetness, as if infused with the scent of blooming flowers. A gentle breeze rustled the crystal leaves, creating a soft chiming sound that echoed through the forest like a distant melody. It was a place of surreal beauty, but Ning Feng couldn't shake the feeling that it was also fraught with unseen dangers.
"what?!!," Luo Bing said, her voice barely above a whisper. "This place.... how can this be?"
I looked at her, his senses on high alert. The tranquility of the crystal forest was deceptive. He knew they had to be vigilant
"What happened? Lady Luo Bing", I asked .
"This area, I can hear the qi, it's almost as if it is telling me something." She said with a bewildered face.
"I don't hear anything, but now that you mention it, I think there is something wrong with the placement of things here......its almost like a formation." I replied with my own observations.
Luo Bing looked at me with some surprise," You know formations, that's really impressive very few people can learn formations, you will be valued greatly by the formation hall, its always in need of new blood."
"As for why you can't hear anything, its because you are probably not proficient in sound techniques, they are my specialty." She explained.
"Oh, so that's why but isn't this situation too much of a coincidence. How can we just arrive in a place that is so compatible with our abilities." I thought aloud.
As we ventured deeper, the trees grew taller and the light more diffused. Occasionally, they came across clusters of flowers that seemed to be made of the same crystalline material as the trees.
These flowers emitted a soft, golden glow and gave off a faint, sweet fragrance that was both calming and intoxicating.
In the distance, we could hear the faint sound of running water. Following the sound, we soon found a crystal-clear stream flowing through the forest.
The water sparkled as if infused with tiny diamonds, and the bed of the stream was lined with smooth, colorful stones that added to the enchanting scenery.
Luo Bing knelt by the stream, examining the water carefully. "It looks safe, but we should be cautious. Even the most beautiful places can hide the deadliest dangers."
I watched as she dipped her fingers into the water, testing its temperature. "Do you think this place is natural, or was it created by the dungeon?"
Luo Bing stood up, brushing her fingers dry. "It's hard to say. The dungeon has shown us many wonders and horrors. Whether it's a creation of nature or some ancient, powerful entity, we must remain vigilant."
As they continued their journey through the forest, I couldn't help but marvel at the sheer beauty around them. But his mind was also occupied with a pressing question: Was the dungeon sentient, or were its actions the result of some complex but ultimately mindless program?
As we walked, my thoughts drifted to the nature of the dungeon itself. The way it had transported them, the strange environments, the rules and trials—it all pointed to something far beyond a simple trap.
I couldn't shake the feeling that the dungeon was aware of their presence, reacting to our actions in real-time.
The division into two-man teams, the specific environments they had been placed in, and the tasks they were likely to face all suggested a level of intelligence and intent. But was this true sentience, or just an incredibly sophisticated system designed to test and challenge those who entered?
"If this dungeon is sentient," I thought, "then it must have a purpose, a reason for putting us through these trials. Perhaps it seeks to test our strength and resolve, to find those worthy of its treasures. Or maybe it's something more sinister, a mechanism to weed out the weak and consume them."
The alternative, that the dungeon was a highly advanced but ultimately mindless construct, was equally troubling. If it was just a program, then there was no reasoning with it, no way to predict its actions beyond understanding its patterns. It would mean that their fates were entirely subject to the whims of a complex, unfeeling machine.
If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation.
I shook my head, trying to clear my thoughts. Speculation wouldn't help them now. They needed to focus on the immediate challenges and work together to survive.
"Lady Luo Bing," I said, breaking the silence. "Do you think the dungeon is sentient, or is it just a very elaborate trap?"
Luo Bing glanced at me, her eyes thoughtful. "It's difficult to say. The way it reacts and adapts to our presence suggests some level of awareness. But whether that means it's truly sentient or just a sophisticated mechanism... I don't know. We should assume it could be either and prepare for both possibilities."
She usually acts cold and bored around people from other sects but is a little more relaxed with people she consider as her sect members or maybe it has something to do with the fact that she also likes to indulge herself in things like these where she can explore various kinds of mysteries.

*The Floating Ruins*
Ning Rong and Wang Mei found themselves standing on a narrow platform, high above an endless void, surrounded by the eerie, ancient floating ruins. The air was filled with a faint hum of magic, and the occasional spark of energy leaped between the ruins, casting brief, brilliant flashes of light that illuminated their path.
The platform beneath their feet was made of weathered stone, covered in thick, creeping vines that glowed with a bioluminescent light, adding to the surreal atmosphere.
"Stay close," Ning Rong said, her voice steady. "These ruins are ancient, and who knows what traps they might hold."
Wang Mei nodded, her eyes wide with a mixture of wonder and fear. "Let's stick together and keep an eye out for anything unusual."
As they began to move forward, the platform creaked under their weight, swaying slightly. The narrow bridges connecting the platforms were barely wide enough for one person, and they had to balance carefully to avoid slipping. The ruins themselves were covered in thick vines that seemed to pulse with an inner light, adding to the already treacherous terrain.
Suddenly, the vines around them began to move, creeping towards them with a sinister intent. "Run!" Ning Rong shouted, her voice echoing through the ruins.
They sprinted across the narrow bridges, the vines close behind. Ning Rong raised her hand, summoning her lightning-based techniques. She used the artefact ring Feng gave her to minimise the usage of her qi.
A crackling bolt of lightning shot from her fingers, striking the vines and causing them to recoil with a hiss. The air was filled with the smell of ozone and burnt vegetation.
Wang Mei, using her wind-based techniques, created gusts of wind that sliced through the vines, clearing their path. The wind whipped around them, pushing the vines back and giving them a momentary respite. "This way!" Wang Mei called, pointing to a larger platform ahead.
They reached the platform and paused to catch their breath, but their relief was short-lived. The platform was covered in ancient traps, designed to catch intruders unaware.
As Ning Rong stepped forward, a section of the floor gave way, revealing a hidden pit lined with sharp spikes. She leaped back just in time, her reflexes honed by years of training.
"Watch your step," Ning Rong warned. "This place is full of traps and I think the stones are blocking our soul sense."
The moment she said that Wang Mie also stepped on trap tile as a spear raring with qi came flying towards her, she activated her wind concept as a donut shaped qi construct made of which looked like wind appeared behind her back.
Spear which was only a 3 metres away from her suddenly changed its trajectory slightly and it passed a few centimetres away from her face .
It landed on the ground and it shook the surrounding area, Wang Mie felt a cold sweat running through her back.
They navigated the platform carefully, using their abilities to detect and avoid the traps. Ning Rong's lightning concept allowed her to sense the hidden mechanisms which used the element to activate, while Wang Mei's wind concept revealed the pressure plates and tripwires. Together, they made their way across the platform, avoiding the deadly pitfalls and snares.
As they reached the edge of the platform, they were confronted by a series of creepy statues. The statues were humanoid, carved from a dark, unidentifiable stone, and their eyes seemed to follow them as they moved. The statues' expressions were twisted into grotesque masks of anger and pain, and the sight of them sent a chill down Ning Rong's spine.
"These statues are watching us," Wang Mei whispered, her voice trembling.
Ning Rong nodded, her eyes narrowing. "Stay alert. There might be more to these statues than meets the eye."
As they moved past the statues, the air grew colder, and the hum of magic intensified. Suddenly, the eyes of the statues began to glow with a sinister red light, and a low, rumbling sound filled the air. The ground beneath their feet shook, and cracks began to form in the stone.
"We need to move, now!" Ning Rong shouted, grabbing Wang Mei's arm and pulling her forward.
They ran across the platform, the statues' eyes following them with an unblinking gaze. The rumbling grew louder, and chunks of stone began to fall from the ceiling, crashing down around them. Ning Rong used her lightning techniques to blast the falling debris out of their path, while Wang Mei created powerful gusts of wind to clear the way.
As they reached the end of the platform, they found themselves facing a wide chasm. The only way across was a narrow, rickety bridge made of ancient, decaying wood. "We have no choice," Ning Rong said, her voice firm. "We have to cross."
Wang Mei nodded, her face pale but determined. "Let's do this."
They stepped onto the bridge, their steps careful and measured. The wood creaked and groaned under their weight, and the wind howled around them, threatening to tear the bridge apart.
Ning Rong led the way, her lightning techniques ready to fend off any attacks, while Wang Mei followed close behind, using her wind abilities to stabilize the bridge.
Halfway across, the bridge began to sway violently, and the vines from the ruins reached out, trying to pull them back. Ning Rong unleashed a powerful bolt of lightning, incinerating the vines and causing them to retreat. Wang Mei summoned a strong gust of wind, pushing the remaining vines away and giving them a clear path.
They reached the other side of the chasm just as the bridge collapsed into the void below. Panting and exhausted, they leaned against the wall of the platform, taking a moment to catch their breath.
"That was close," Wang Mei said, her voice shaky.
Ning Rong nodded, her eyes scanning the ruins for any more threats. "We need to stay focused. This place is full of surprises, and we can't afford to let our guard down."
As they continued their journey through the floating ruins, they couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched. The statues' eyes seemed to follow them everywhere they went, and the air was thick with an ominous presence. But despite the danger, they pressed on, determined to uncover the secrets of the fourth floor and find their way back to their friends.
The ruins were a labyrinth of narrow pathways, hidden traps, and eerie statues, but Ning Rong and Wang Mei tackled each challenge with skill and determination. They worked together seamlessly, their abilities complementing each other and allowing them to overcome the obstacles in their path.
As they reached the heart of the ruins, they found themselves standing before a massive stone door, covered in intricate carvings and glowing runes. The door seemed to pulse with a dark energy, and the air around it was charged with magic.
"This is a puzzle, I think it involves the same concept as formations to unlock the door, I think I can solve it in 10 min." Wang Mie said with a faint smile. "I can't believe it, Feng has also been giving me similar riddles to solve in order to help me with formations but his puzzle looks a bit more like a cube." She said with some amusement. "I wonder what is he doing right now?" A smile creeping on her face.
Ning Rong looked at her weirdly, "Does she have an interest in that ever frowning nerd?" Ning Rong thought but for some reason her chest felt a bit heavy.
But just at that moment they heard a rumbling sound, Wang Mie saw a group of those weirdly shaped statues charging towards them. "Sister Rong, Can you handle them for some time, I need to unlock the door."
But instead of an answer all she was Ning Rong move like a bolt of pink lightning as she appeared in the middle of those statues .
"First season" the moment she said that thurder clouds appeared out of nowhere .
Thunderclouds materialized above them, dark and ominous, crackling with electric energy. Bolts of pink lightning arced down from the clouds, striking the statues with precise, devastating force. Each strike was accompanied by a sharp crack, the sound echoing through the ruins as the statues shattered under the onslaught.
"What's wrong with her and what's up with that new technique, it's so powerful and she can even control the lightning to precisely strike at the target without wasting any qi."
But before she could say another she saw more of these statues coming.
"Second season" Ning Rong still had that frowning face instead of her usual casual smile.
