A grey egg sat lifeless, in the burrow. The others had successfully hatched. This one had not, this was the fate of the weak. However, while this egg was at the edge of death, it was not yet dead. There was still a sliver of life that was slowly fading away..
Looking within the egg, at the little creature's soul, one could see that it was a very small round wispy thing. It was quickly shrinking smaller and smaller. At least, it doesn’t have to feel it, being far too small to be cognizant. Oh well, life moves on.
Elsewhere in the spiritual realms a daemonic dance party was really making a lot of noise. So so much noise that the great architect of the spiritual realm below them banged on the firmament of his creation. This did not succeed in quieting down the daemonic dance party. It had however succeeded at dislodging a daemonic destiny fruit from its tree. This fruit, via statistical anomaly, instead of landing on the ground, simply falls through, and out of the daemonic spiritual realm, and out into the in-between space. From there it had its own wacky adventures throughout the spiritual realm, before eventually ending up within the vicinity of this tiny shrinking soul.
The daemonic destiny fruit then did the worst thing one could do to a creature. It enlightened it. A ray of rainbow light erupted from the fruit, and struck the dying soul. The tiny soul became engulfed in a feeling of endless, and eternal glory! Then, it felt the horrible pain of all of life's vicissitudes at once! The spherical featureless thing began to expand, and transform. A sound that was both screeching, and chanting could be heard.
It took on the shape of a lizard. Fate had smiled upon this little lizard, and ordained that it would indeed get to live. The fruit had diminished itself, and vanished in order to awaken the inner strength of this lizard granting it new life. What a waste, good luck out there little lizard.
Wait, what is that? There! Right there! Inside of the lizard's soul. That tiny golden spot. Huh, that's a rune! The meaning it gives off is: 'Surpassing once more.' Hmm, odd. It seems to be glowing brighter.

A rainbow wave shot out from the rune, and the lizard was once again engulfed in glory. Then it was engulfed in horrible pain, and the awareness that it was now sapient. Yippee.
Back in the material world the egg cracked open, and the lizard came out. It was a small brown thing, and it was hungry. The little burrow it was in was empty. A little light came in from the slight opening of the burrow.
The lizard poked its head out, and warily inspected the surroundings. The burrow was located in the small quiet corner of a wine cellar. It appears that he is within civilization. He cautiously steps out, and begins exploring.
Some time later the lizard had become used to, and comfortable in the cellar. There were bugs to eat, and no predators. Life was good, and lizards did not have ambition.
It did not dare leave the cellar. It had investigated why its siblings seemed to no longer be around. There were a lot of spiders in the cellar. A few had died to them, but the rest had died upstairs. This place had a small feline predator stalking the upper floors and the lizard could maybe fight off and run from a spider, but not a cat.
Time ticked on, and the lizard grew in size, and wisdom. It eventually realized that its consumption was outpacing the capacity of the cellar to provide. Unless he started hunting the large, and dangerous spiders, as a lowly little lizard.
The lizard, and a greengrass spider were facing each other. The common spider was of similar size to the lizard. Its venom would be deadly. He had coaxed it out of its web. Its web was under the wine barrels, so the lizard used gravity to drop debris until the spider got annoyed. The lizard launched itself at it. The spider bit at the lizard. It struck its tail. The lizard lost its tail, and bit down on the spider. The spider struggled a bit, but now it was in the lizard's jaws. The lizard swallowed it. It then waddled its way back into its familiar burrow. It slept.
It found itself lying down in the void. Above it, an image of a three-eyed dragon hovered over him. A light erupted from its third eye, and struck the lizard. Its light soothed him. He then dreamt of glitter, and gold, and pretty things he lacked the context to understand.
When it awoke, it had regrown its tail. It felt stronger somehow. It had a new mission: seek knowledge. It had the sinking feeling that staying here any longer would be equivalent to simply letting himself die. It regretted all the time it wasted sitting scared in his burrow. The draconic image had granted the lizard the gift of insecurity! How wonderful.
The lizard left his burrow for the last time. It had decided that its fate was to be a wanderer! The now slightly larger lizard stood proudly envisioning a brilliant future.
