CHAPTER 49
Under the same moon, Zoe York was sent home to Levine Manor, looking utterly discontent.
She made a call even as she walked inside. “Quinn! Why didn’t you attend my maternal grandfather’s party with your darling Sam Poodle?”
“I’m busy-I was working overtime.”
“Why do you slave for the Saunders, really? Do you think Sam would be grateful? He has so many women on the side!”
“I’m not doing it for Sam. It’s for myself.”
“You’re stubborn.”
Zoe strode up to the second floor and nonchalantly opened a door, holding her phone between her cheek and shoulder while she reached behind to unzip her gown.
She had to take off the uncomfortable gown, but just as her zipper reached her waist, the bathroom door swung open.
Jay Parker stood frozen at the doorway.
Zoe panicked for just a split second, but she soon pretended she saw nothing and continued to undress calmly while continuing to speak into the phone. “Either way, Sam doesn’t deserve your sacrifice.”
“I know.”
“Oh, I also called to tell you that I’m shooting a TV series in North City. Let’s meet up when you’re free.”
“Sure.”
“I’m already home. Quit working overtime already and go to bed soon.”
“Yeah. Bye.”
Once she hung up, Zoe turned and found Jay with his back to her, his ears already red.
She sneered and said nonchalantly, “You’ve been with every kind of woman there is, Mr. Parker. Why are you acting like a virgin?!”
Jay pursed his lips and explained why he was there. “There’s a leak in my bathroom. I didn’t know you were coming back.”
“My dear brother forced me to come home.” Zoe snorted. “Shouldn’t you be with Mandy Jessop for the night? Didn’t know you were that quick.”
Jay’s Adam’s apple was bobbing, but Zoe simply said that as an offhand remark-she did not
expect an answer from Jay. “Anyway, I’m drowsy. It’s time for my bath and beauty sleep, so please leave if you’re done with the bathroom, Uncle Jay.” Belonging © NôvelDram/a.Org.
“Get changed first-
“Already did.”
Jay turned and saw that Zoe had put on a loose bathrobe, with a cigarette between her fingers.
Though his lips were twitching, Jay did not say what he had in mind and he simply left.
As the door closed, Zoe’s feigned composure turned to a scowl.
That was exactly why she never wanted to return after all these years.
The night was still young.
There stood a slender figure before a glass wall, from which the entirety of the bustling city could be seen.
She was holding a tablet, and with her fair fingers which were polished red, she nonchalantly swiped through a dozen high-definition photos.
Each of them showed John gently draping his suit jacket over a woman’s shoulders.
“Find out her family background. I want everything available on her-the more detailed, the better.”
“Yes, ma’am,” her bodyguard, who had been standing behind her, replied respectfully.
As morning arrived, Cordy opened her eyes and found herself having a throbbing headache.
How much did she drink last night? She even forgot how she made it back!
All she remembered was leaving the banquet hall, and everything after was a blur, including John..
She sat up on her bed right then, and she saw that she was still in the same gown.
Her heart racing, she pulled off her blanket to get out of bed.
When she did so, she saw the band-aids applied on her ankles.
Her heart raced further right then.
Her heels had been cutting into her skin, but she never let it show.
She was surprised that John would notice and help her with it.
She bit her lip.
She had to admit… that he was dangerous.
