Chapter Three: Saved by an Interesting Girl

“Ergh…Where am I…” I groaned, awaking in yet another new area. “And why do these chapters always start with me waking up?”

I’d twist my head to the non-existent camera now looking at the reader and breaking the fourth wall, even though this is a book and not a show.

I looked around, my head hovering from side to side as I took in my surroundings. I was now sitting in a bed in some kind of cabin, with the covers drawn over me only leaving my shoulder up to my head.

My thoughts were quickly interrupted as a spoon was shoved into my mouth. It tasted like…Chicken noodle soup? I looked up to see who had done that.

“Oh, looks like you’re awake.” A voice had called out, my eyes tracked down the voice, my vision was a tad blurry, but as it focused more and more the details of the girls face grew to become more refined. She had silver, long hair that flowed down to her shoulders, and two green eyes of which were staring into mine. She quickly removed the spoon from my mouth.

My hands now headed up the fabric of the bed as I pushed myself up so I was now sitting, with my back pressed up against the bed-frame.

“Who are you? Where am I now?” I asked, a little unsure if all the stuff I said earlier was out loud or not.

“My name is Yuki Hayashi…I’m a support class player stationed in this dangerous forest for heroes like you who go out grinding strong monsters for HP then completely faint afterwards.” She answered bluntly, I’m not completely sure but something in what she said implied a tone of anger.

“Eh..?” I would twist my head, bringing my hand to the back of my hair. Yuki gave me a cold stare.

“I mean, seriously, who are you and what’re you even doing out here of all places? I checked all your stats and they’re all…F.” She stated.

A blow that shattered my soul, I forgot I lost all of my stats from my previous life, I spent a lot of time getting those to where they were.

“My name is Yoshida Ren, how I got here is a long story…Anyhow, thank you for retrieving me and healing me here! I should probably head out now, I’ve gotta get out of your hair and all.” I would begin to ramble on as I simultaneously began to change into the top part of my new clothing, which was still quite peasant looking…

I made my way towards the door, only to be stopped by Yuki placing her hand onto my shoulder, yanking me back so that I faced her.

“Not so fast…You’re just going to die out there again like you had fainted the first time I found you, only worse with crazy strong monsters out there. Normally, I usually just call in some strong heroes to escort you out but they’re all busy right now. What’s your rush, anyways?” She asked.

“I was given a second chance…And I can’t waste it. I’m going to become the rank one hero in the world. I learned that every second is precious, I gotta get outta here and do missions n all asap!” I answered.

“You’re not going to GET to do missions if you just die again, it’ll be a waste. I’ll go with you, so I can heal you once you get folded by the monsters we come across.” She said, with a small nod to go along with her statement.

“Hmm…Alright then, whatever gets me out of this forest.”

And with that, the two of us were on our way out of here.

It wasn’t until I really focused that I noticed my new condition.

My vision over time was being slowly restored, and my energy was a lot higher, as if my stamina had been completely replenished over the time where I had been asleep after that intense battle with that Serpent Monster.

She really did a good job repairing me after that fight!

Anyhow, the two of us began our journey traversing throughout the dangerous, large forest. It didn’t occur to me until a lot later that I didn’t even have any idea of how to get out of here. However, Yuki knew this place well, and even if she didn’t she also carried around a map. How nifty.

She’d continue guiding and navigating me through lush green paths and stone filled smaller areas, and rivers and lakes and hills.

We were closing in towards the exit which would lead us into the city district, and for most of the time during the entirety of our journey so far we didn’t talk at all. However we came down a particularly long path of which streaked down for what felt like a mile. The silence had grown to such deafening levels that I simply had to speak.

“So…Why’d you become a Support Class?” I asked, almost nonchalantly, sticking my hands into my pockets with my head facing away from her.

“I hate violence, healing is the opposite of hurting, simple.” She answered matter of factly.

“That can’t be your only reason, can it?” I followed up.

“Maybe there is more, but I don’t know you all that well yet. Why’d you become a hero, anyway?” She’d ask.

I took a second to think, before formulating my answer.

“I grew up in a pretty harsh environment with no parents, I wanted to provide people with that sense of security that I never got to have, that’s about it for me.” I responded, looking towards her.

She had this big gaping look on her face with widened eyes, I suppose it might’ve made her feel a bit awkward for her to deny her personal story behind why she chose what she did only for me to share my own reasons.

Our enlightening conversation would be abruptly cut off. Intense rustling would rage out from a nearby bush. I stuck my forearm out as a barrier between Yuki and the bush, like some kind of wall blocking her from the noise.

“I got it.” I told her.

“I’m right behind you to heal you for when you get beat up!” She pat me on the shoulder before giving me a strong shove towards the mysterious noise.

Without warning, a small green blur would flash out from the bush. Almost instinctively, I drew the sword I got as loot from killing Ness as I clashed with the strange beast. Now that it had fully stopped I was able to get a good look at it in its entirety. It had sharp teeth, green skin and long point ears of which stretched out from its head. Not to mention its shorter stature and yellow eyes.

These types of things…It’s species, has a name, what was it again? Oh right, it’s a goblin!

It clashed with me using an iron dagger with a wooden handle, it quickly broke away from the clash leaping back onto the floor as I took the time to input its stats. Clicking a small button that recognizable holographic panel would spontaneously appear in front of me.

The stone dagger the creature uses has special properties, including miniscule buffs coming with some of the attacks.

I would quickly inspected the stats, taking note that this creature wasn’t even stronger than Ness. Nothing I haven’t faced before, right? I exited the panel to face this strange goblin man in a 1 on 1.

“Glimbo” would leap out towards me, dagger drawn, I quickly raised the sword taking a more defensive stance.

Class F Skill Activation; Chaotic Swing

The little guy would suddenly rapidly alter its course from left to right, leaving small afterimages in the wake of all his moments, this would slightly catch me off guard as he now leaped up, taking a strong slash onto my side of which I barely managed to redirect. A small cut would be left as I clutched my side.

I forgot that all my raw physical stats are way lower, which meant that as of this moment even this Class C goblin was above me. I looked over to Yuk, who would be chilling with a butterfly resting on her finger as she sat on a nearby log.

The creature slammed the ability, quickly moving from side to side. It didn’t particularly hurt as much as it was annoying. He kept rushing at me swaying from side to side getting small cuts on me as we kept clashing. However only my health bar was on a slow decrease. I dashed backwards, just about fed up with this guys antics.

“AHAHAHAHA, you suck!” He taunted, squatting down like a little gremlin.

A vein would run across my forehead, I quickly reached into my pocket drawing the dice to activate my ability.

Glitched Skill Activation, Infinity Gamble!

I threw the dice out, similar to what happened when I first rolled it in my battle against Ness, everything would slow down. The dice sat in the air, rolling around, crackling with strange energy as the infinite sided pattern with the galaxy design would form. Even Yuki was a little intruiged at the sight of it. The dice exploded into the tiny fragments and pieces as the panel in front of me would read the skill I obtained through the activation.

I facepalmed at the sight of the skill I gained, looks like my luck just wasn’t it today. I tried activating the skill, taking a high jump into the air of which did completely nothing. Glimbo would catch me on my way to the ground, leaping forward with a strong thrust of his stone dagger, I just barely managed to block the thrust with the middle of my blade, being sent a distance back from the impact.

”Think…Think! I need to innovate, how can I turn this average ability into something that’ll let me win…” I thought to myself. Whilst I did, Glimbo would continue swerving around, this time going for a lower stance at my legs. He swung down towards my ankles as I lifted my leg then kicked him away.

He was relentless, he got up immediately afterwards, going in again for more slashes. We clashed again, once, twice, three times.

Skill Activation, Steal Dash

Glimbo would suddenly dash quickly right past me, suddenly multiple cuts would appear all over my abdomen and leg as I’d grunt, backing up and clutching my blade.

I checked my stamina bar, only to see it had decreased greatly. No matter the skill I obtain it seems that activating the dice roll takes a huge toll on my energy regardless. My movements were growing slower and heavier as I huffed, pointing the tip of my sword towards Glimbo.

Glimbo smiled, reaching into his pocket and bringing out coins, MY coins. Guess that’s why they call it steal dash.

I stared him down, but in that moment I realized something. The sword I obtained, it came with skills!

I stood strong in the face of Glimbo, awaiting his first move, and low and behold he made it. He rushed forth for another steal dash, only for me to leap up in response using the jump skill I gained from the dice roll, I looked down towards Glimbo, raising the sword.

Skill Activation, Serpent Twister!

From on top of Glimbo, I did one powerful rotating slash, and below me a giant tornado of sharp wind would form as Glimbo fell to his knees from the heavy impact, the battle was over right then and there.

Glimbo has successfully been defeated!

“HAH, see, I didn’t lose!” I cackled, turning to face Yuki before completely face planting into her from exhaustion. She held me up with a concerned look on her face.

I later awoke with a bunch of bandages wrapped around my wounds, my head was still a little fuzzy. Whilst I was asleep it seemed that Yuki set up a campfire and bandaged me up. She was now peacefully sleeping by a little log. I merely gave a light smile, pushing myself up off the ground.

I took my shirt and brought it over her so she’d be able to keep warm in the night as I then spent the rest of the morning seeing out food for us to eat once she woke up.

I found some eggs from a chicken, and a pig…Yuki awoke to the sound of crackling bacon and eggs.

“Ta-da!” I smiled, bringing the pan towards her as she woke up. She looked around, before clutching the shirt I put over her as cover.

“Thanks.” She quietly said as we both got plates and ate for a bit, afterwards, we were back on our feet and heading towards the outbounds of the forest.

“Hey, Ren…” Yuki spoke. “What was that dice thing you did??? I’ve never seen that before.”

“Huh? Ohh, that thing, yeah it’s a long story. Basically -“

We proceeded to have a lengthy conversation as I caught her up with everything regarding my death at the city, revival and fight with Ness. By the time I was finished, we reached the edge of the forest. Now it was all plains and farmlands, and in the distance, the city.

“Ok then, I ought to head out, thanks for helping me out of the forest, Yuki.” I smiled, she gave me a frown.

“Y’know, there are some monsters that pop up every once in awhile on that trail, you could die, and even in the city, a low rank hero like you who struggles against C class goblins would be chopped up by the average villain. If you’re going to become the rank one hero, I should come with you, just in case.” She said, turning her head away from me as to avoid eye contact.

“I think I’d like that…Yuki!”
