Chapter Three: Uncovered Mysteries

The year 1465 of the Imperial Calander.

Friday, the Twenty-fourth of April.

As I mentioned yesterday that I would do. I presented Spymaster Jacob with the information I had, well scrapes and pieces of a large mystery of it.

Spymaster Jacob looked concerned when I showed him the information, so much that he ripped my paper with the calculations on it out of my hand.

He also noticed that this would be as a mess to clear up if left alone for too long, and I couldn't agree more with that statement.

The Spymaster assured me his best people would see this, and get to the button of this matter.

It does make me think through, how this much just vanished into thin air? Personally, if I had to guess, it's either all upon the shoulders of the last Royal Treasurer or some master thief.

I left the Spymaster's quarters, leaving that damp and dimly lit place right away.

In the hallway afterwards, I stumbled upon the Princess-consort, holding little Adolphus in her arms as he played around with a toy in hand.

We talked for a brief moment, mostly just pointless court gossip and the like.

After I bid the Princess-consort farewell, lowering my head down before the woman. I made my way to my office, having documents to deal with.

The year 1465 of the Imperial Calander.

Monday, the first of May.

The King of Idano arrived at the court today, a large banquet with spicy food and good royal wine later.

His arrival seems to be linked with asking for support in a war, a powerful southern neighbour of his has invaded his lands.

And after hours of sitting about as we discussed and debated, trying to lay the price and terms for entering the war on Idano's side.

The two monarchs came to an agreement, finalized by a pledge to Vozhos himself.

The Kingdom of Luthen to declare war against the Rakeonian Republic, and in exchange, for a marriage of both their firstborn children.

Heh.

Idano's current hair, Princess-heir Madeleine Idano, is the only child of King Cnut the fourth.

He must hope now that a male heir will be sired, or his lands will be turned over to Luthern controlled.

Friday, the Eleventh of June.

It's been a hectic couple of weeks.

Having to figure out how much the transport of supplies, rations, and cost of the nightmare called war is on the treasury.

I hope, by almighty Vozhos, that this war will be over with quick. With the black hole in the treasury, and still not heard just a whimper from Spymaster Jacob by this point.

A prolonged war will only hurt the Kingdom more than it's worth, and unless they manage to defeat the Republic and bring them to the tables and demand war reparations.

Troubling times surely are ahead of us.

Though, for that to happen. The Kingdom of Luthern must be the ones to grasp the most achievements on the battlefield.

Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon.

If memory serves right. The south of Idano is filled with thick green woodlands and lots of small rivers and the like. I can only imagine how must of a delight it must be, I'm kidding there, to have the privilege to plan out the logistics for that.

That's for the Marshal to do since I've done my job.

Saturday, the Eighth of July.

I'm being watched, and I can only guess who may be interested in knowing more about me.

And no, I'm not going crazy.

When I entered my office like any other day, nothing suspicious about that. Though when I started to go through the documents for me to see, noticing that some of them had been opened before I laid my hands on them.

Of course, while It would be logical, it could be Robert that took a look to preview. But, surprisingly, when asked he denies it is him I don't have any reason to doubt the old man.

So, if it wasn't Robert with the only spare key for my office. I checked with my pendulum, an eagle-headed steel shape with two small blue gems as eyes.

The wonderful thing about the pendulum around my neck, and I thank father for it. Is that it's enchanted to sniff out magical residue left, and something all twenty schools bestowed upon us by Vozhos himself share.

When hovered over the stack of documents it began to vibrate, which tells me magic residue is left there.

This prompted me to check my whole office with this discovery, and lord and behold. There were tiny magical mirrors all over my office with magical residue left floating in the air, and I haven't seen anything like this before.

I found four of this kind of mirror, and all being the same shape and size of the mirror.

I informed Spymaster Jacob initially about this, handing over the mirrors for him.

He confirmed that these mirrors were used to conjure up images for a second mirror, but he couldn't confirm which frequency it may be.

Further testing would be needed before they could come to a conclusion, and be able to trace where the item was used on the other side.

I thanked Jacob and left his office, but a thought crept in the back of my head.

Is Spymaster Jacob just slow or is he incompetent doing his work?

To have allowed these spying mirrors to be placed inside the castle, which was one of his jobs to prevent.

There's no telling where else this mysterious person or persons may have planted elsewhere in the castle, and the consequences of having allowed such devices to be let in in the first place.

My trust in Spymaster's ability to perform his job has decreased exponentially, and my hopes he's able to come to the bottom of this.

Monday, the Tenth of July.

Spymaster Jacob figured out that the mirror could be traced back to the Rakeonian Republic, but to where specific inside the Rakeonian Republic he couldn't tell.

It is times like these that I wish magical decay wouldn't be a thing,

But, enough of my wishful thinking. I have to take back my comments about him being incompetent, and I'll never call him that again.

He also managed to make a breakthrough with the people that shadowed me all those months ago.

Turns out, and I like to know why.

Spymaster Jacob uncovered an intelligence operation inside New Aiev, belonging to the Wulfbird syndicate.

I've heard about this one, if not just because of some high profile gatherings.

They deal with illegal items, mostly addictive magical subsenses and forbidden objects with Nazul's taint on them.

Their members mostly are made up of beastmen and other undesirables, foul abominations of Nezul's magic that leaked during the Age of creation.

As to why they would shadow me, while I do have some personal theories.

It does make me feel a bit safer to know they're out of the city, and since they've decided to target a Royal official. I would give my right hand that Spymaster Jacob won't go easy on them, and probably use methods I'll like to not know.

Tuesday, the Eighteenth of August.

There's been a new development with the missing money, and after so long I had nearly given up.

It brings me with a mixture of great joy and a sour taste when I read over the report brought by Robert.

We've managed to figure out a group of suspects, though they're mainly nobles who'd serve the Treasury within the last forty years.

Why couldn't it be some of the peasant workers here, it'll be much easier to bring them to justice.

We will have to petition his Majesty for us to be granted privilege to bring the nobles to justice, and that's only if we can present a strong enough case.

While I do agree that nobles should be given leeway to some extent, having served King and country for generations. It makes justice hard to come by in some cases, and even when justice is served, most of the time it's only a slight slap on the wrist.

I wouldn't mind a reform to be enacted through the Noble Council, but that happening is like a peasant finding an adult fist-sized diamond in a field. Even if it does go through, and again, I highly doubt that the upper echelon of the nobility would allow it to remain a law for long.

Duke Alfr of house Whiterun

Marquess Eric of house Brenton

Count Humbert of house Saxon

Count Peter of house Ahiem

There are the names of the nobles, and what a mess I can see ahead in trying to get them to justice.

My hope is that I can ask Spymaster Jacob for some help from his agents to help gather more information about these nobles, even if only one agent is available.
