Chapter Five: Heretics to the Mines!

Chapter Five: Heretics to the Mines!

The year 1466 of the Imperial Calander.

Friday, the First of January.

We got them, after a long investigation that took some time.

We managed to get tangible proof, praise be Vozhos, that the four Lords are repugnant worshipers of the great deceiver Nezul himself!

One of Spymaster Jacob's agents managed to infiltrate a secret Nezul sect, located within the city of Hendrick's Crossing located within Duke Alfr's fiefdom.

The agent saw the familiar faces of the other three Lords there as well, plus some other minor Lords and their vassal. In total after a headcount, including the unimportant worshipers, about forty people of both sexes and ages were present when gathering for their vile chants and rituals.

Truly, the vilest of depravity toward almighty Vozhos. Their deaths at the burning stakes will be a wonderful sight to see, for may the flames cleanse their dammed soul!

With this, we only need one more thing to set a stop to their blasphemy, and that is to convince his Majesty for us to be granted the privilege to bring them to justice.

I'm sure that getting that permission wouldn't be so hard, knowing his Majesty's devoted belief in the almighty Vozhos!

Though, unfortunately, I won't be present when Spymaster Jacob requests an audience with his Majesty, being busy with work as always. I believe that he will be able to convince his Majesty, and as mentioned just above my dear diary.

But, I will make sure, I will be present when the kindling of the pyre is alit and watch with glee as they are cleansed of their foul Nezul influence!

May their souls be cleansed in holy fire!

To switch to a topic that is unrelated to what's written above, and it's mostly personal.

I have met a lovely woman who works inside the castle as a maid, a minor noble with the rank of Baron. This woman, a beautiful brown-haired woman of a pale complexion and emerald green eyes. She has encaptured me with her beauty by first sight, being eighteen of age.

She's a newly hired maid, having just come into the castle on the twenty-fifth of December. She was assigned to the maintaining of the bedchambers of the castle.

This is also how I saw her the first time, entering my room as she was changing the blankets and sheets.

We broke into a small conversation between the two of us as she changed the bedwear, mostly me asking questions about how long she'd been serving in the castle.

I can't tell how long we spent talking, as after I finished with asking the general questions. She noticed my pendulum around my neck and knew what it was, taking me by total surprise.

Turned out she's an avid lover of magical knowledge, quite rare for a woman since they rarely hold any magical powers. It wasn't until that the sun was going down that we noticed we're talked too much, our conversation had shifted from magic to our home territory and back to magic.

This tale has been unlawfully obtained from Royal Road. If you discover it on Amazon, kindly report it.

I will admit just now that she's more knowledgeable than me when it comes to magic, I never did pay attention to my lessons after all. I'm sure if I didn't have a dry and cranky teacher, making me want to try, I might have known more.

I know for a fact, giving that House Greenwich is of Marquess rank ourselves. Father would never allow one of his sons to marry down, and the world of the nobility would look down upon someone that did this. But, I just can't stop thinking about her, the time we're spent has left a clear impression on me.

But, I will keep a rational mind. I will test how good her character is, and try to figure out how she will react around children.

The year 1466 of the Imperial Calander.

Sunday, the Tenth of February.

His Majesty has been convinced to grant Spymaster Jacob the privilege to take the four Lords noble rank, and a bunch of lower nobles, for being Nezul worshipers.

I am not doubting that physical fighting will take place, as the Royal Guard is being mobilised and sent out, together with Priests aiding the brave souls that are sent out to cleanse these vile creatures.

If the Royal Guard won't be the ones that bring in the four Lords, in chains and put before his Majesty. I'm sure the people that reside in the cities and towns under their rulership will take up arms and drive out the scourge of heresy.

There's also news about the discovery of numerous underground dwellings of beastmen that has made their home in the sewers underneath the big cities, quite a fitting place for vermin. But they can't remain there, Vozhos knows what they might be planning in the dark undergrounds of our beloved and beautiful cities!

The populous are quite worried about this news, overhearing some people talk about it on the streets.

I'm sure this will be handled in great haste, to ensure the safety of Luthern and its people against the beastmen menace that roam in the shadows.

The year 1466 of the Imperial Calander.

Wednesday, the twentieth of March.

The four Lords were brought before his Majesty today in chains, having them work in the deep mines for forty years together with their families.

It was not the punishment I had hoped for, burning on the pyre would be a fitting end to these heretics. But, while not ideal, their punishment is enough to be satisfied. At the very least they will serve for the good of the Kingdom, and the prosperity of its people.

The other minor nobles and burghers also captured, and their collective families. Have also been sent to the mines to mine the iron ore for the Kingdom, a suiting punishment for them as well.

Also, the beastmen found under the cities of the Kingdom.

I've heard small talk of the beastmen have been gearing up for a possible war, as weapons and magical scrolls for single use were found in weapon caches of theirs.

The beastmen themselves have refused to talk, instead of remaining silent as they were interrogated in the castle dungeons.

If true, and I hardly doubt not to be the case. It would mean we have to increase our anti-beastmen measures, or possibly have a violent conflict with the beastmen.

The year 1466 of the Imperial Calander.

Sunday, the Twenty-fourth of April.

Two years of loyal service to the Kingdom of Luthern, going through quite an interesting time since I started two years ago.

I feel satisfied and content in my position in life, being without a worry in terms of materialistic comforts. My interaction with the different people of New Aiev, both the shop vendors and merchants to his Majesty himself, has made me a much more joyful person.

We've managed to fill the black hole of the missing money, even managed to inject more wealth into the royal coffers. I managed to stay alive even with the Wulfbird syndicate after my head, delving too deep into their nefarious dealings with the previous Royal Treasurers

I have made headways with the lovely maid, whose name is Isabella, and I have come to the conclusion that she fulfils the requirements I set for a woman.

While not shy to make her hands dirty, being a Baron from the outer reaches of the Kingdom requires a more direct approach for the family. She shows clear signs of a caregiving woman that knows her role in society, which is a virtue I appreciate immensely.

I do not know what may ahead of me in the future, no one knows what their futures may look like. But, with the safety of being the Royal Treasurer of Luthern, my foundation of mine look very secure indeed!

I'm looking forward to the many years ahead of me in the service of King Phillipe II of Luthern, and possibly his heir.
