Book 1: Chapter 22

Matsui watched in horror as Revena's body swelled below, convulsing as massive bones burst through her dress. Titanic vertebrae crested from her hunched back, skulls cresting atop gnarled spines longer than train cars.

"She's turning into a kaiju skeleton!" Reira cried, eyes wide.

In the distance, fighter jets unleashed a barrage of missiles toward the towering monstrosity. But Revena sensed the oncoming weapons and turned her cavernous sockets skyward. She raised her scythe, gathering inky energies that spit acidic death upon the planes. Fireballs blossomed where the sleek metal had been seconds before.

The beast had eliminated the threat, preventing the city's destruction. Revena turned her sightless gaze upward toward the source of past irritations - the three girls perched helplessly above. With a swipe of her colossal hand, she leveled the tower. The structure groaned as support beams shattered. The girls' screams echoed amidst the debris as they plunged earthward.

Matsui snatched her friends' hands, desperately summoning winds to slow their descent through the concrete canyons. "Hold on tight, I'll guide us down!" she yelled over the roaring gusts.

Still, they plummeted at suicidal speeds; the streets rushing up to meet them. Matsui wasn't sure her magic could withstand the impact after so many grueling battles.

Above, the kaiju skeleton that was once been Revena loomed like a walking nightmare, malice seeping from her bones. Victory had never seemed more distant, Matsui thought grimly as the end raced toward them.

Suddenly, the girls slowed as if gripped by an invisible hand. Soft light enveloped them, turning their plummet into a gentle glide.

"We're... flying?" Jayla gasped in astonishment.

Dorki's voice resonated from above. "Your powers have evolved in your time of need. Now go, face the challenge before you!"

Reira whooped gleefully as she spun through the energized air. "Now we can take on that monster!"

Grinning, Matsui took her friends' hands once more. "Let's take this battle to the rooftops!"

Their laughter carried on the breeze as they soared between buildings. For a moment, they found simple joy even amidst the looming apocalypse.

But Revena's thunderous bellow shook the city below, shattering the short-lived reprieve. The kaiju blotted out the moon, leaving only her silhouette against the stars.

Reira's face hardened with determination. "No more games. Tonight we end your torment of this city!" Together they flew toward the waiting beast.

Weaving between tilting skyscrapers, the girls evaded the monster's massive swings, which leveled entire blocks effortlessly. Matsui summoned hurricanes to topple the lumbering titan, while Reira wreathed scaffolding in protective fire. Even Jayla found chinks in the ossified armor to land painful strikes.

Yet despite their agility and teamwork, the fiend's raw strength still outmatched them. Matsui feared one misstep could spell their end against the rampaging colossus.

Their battle raged across the skyline, the girls' flashing blades writing legends against the towering blackness of their foe. What fate awaited them at dawn? Would they see the city sunk fully into shadow?

Matsui shook the doubts from her mind. Their combined light had prevailed - it must endure this night. The girls wove between crumbling buildings, weathering the kaiju's devastating blows in search of any weakness.

But no magical attack left a mark on the skeleton form. Revena's cavernous laughter shook buildings to their foundations as her casual backhands leveled city blocks.

Perched atop a surviving rooftop, the girls shared a solemn realization. "Our attacks barely did anything," Matsui said softly. "We must risk everything in one last gambit."

Without hesitation, Reira and Jayla joined hands with Matsui. Their magic resonated between them, swelling two cataclysmic proportions - a supernova that screamed toward the waiting fiend.

But the contact yielded only a blinding flash as the energy dispersed uselessly across Revena's frame. The kaiju emerged utterly unscathed, while everything she glimpsed now bore her immortal curses.

Then, with a careless swing, she reduced towers to cascading rubble - debris that quickly buried the exhausted girls as they desperately tried to take cover.

Had this demon risen beyond anything their friendship could combat? Despair crept in as rubble pinned their drained bodies. Yet where life persists, hope endures.

From the rubble, Matsui spotted the vial glinting amidst the debris - Dr. Yoka's cure! Matsui held on to it for so long that she almost forgot about it.

She picked up the vial and glanced at it closely.

Dorki's voice carried a grave warning. "It may destroy Revena...or create an even blacker evil. But you have no other options left."

Reira and Jayla nodded solemnly. As the kaiju continued her rampage overhead, the girls steeled their resolve.

"Our last stand is here," Matsui said firmly. "Whatever this vial will do, I must use it now. For us, and for our world!"

The three soared toward their awaiting foe as the last light faded from the ravaged cityscape. What legends would they write tonight under the stony stare of the heavens?

Empowered by friendship light, the girls took to the skies through the decimated canyons. Guided by hope's last embers, they raced toward the hulking executioner while Reira and Jayla danced nimbly before its sightless gaze, luring its wrath.

Seizing the distraction, Matsui flew unseen until she was directly before the beast’s cavernous maw. As Revena sensed the insignificant pest and bellowed in rage, Matsui cried out: “Revena! Take your medicine!”

She tossed the vial, and it sparkled briefly against the endless dark before the kaiju swallowed it whole. For agonizing moments, the battle raged on as desperate hope clashed with crushing experience.

Then a tortured roar shook the stars above - the cry of violation erupting from the very pit of the creature's ancient agony. Revena thrashed violently, her seizures razing districts beneath her without reason or control.

Matsui watched in terrified awe. Has Dr. Yoka's cure strengthened into a weapon capable of poisoning even the dead? Or was this merely an additional torment, a fitting punishment for one who scorned life itself to walk again?

Before her eyes, the colossal fiend exploded like a nuclear bomb. She watched with bated breath as the mushroom clouds engulfed the city, obscuring the fate of the kaiju Revena. Had their last gambit with the untested cure destroyed the monstrosity, or merely created an even greater evil? Only time would reveal the victor tonight under the impassive moon.

When the blinding detonation swept over them, Matsui felt her consciousness fade into a sea of white. She awoke on the shores of an unfamiliar, pristine glade that bore no signs of the carnage they had left behind.

A lone girl wearing a sailor school uniform garbed in radiance emerged, bearing features both foreign and familiar. "Kugo Kaho," Matsui breathed in disbelief.

Kugo's smile held a gentle warmth. "You have freed my spirit from the darkness, binding hatred and malice once more in flesh's prison. For this, I thank you."

Before Matsui could respond, Kugo glowed with an inner light no mortal eyes could perceive. Her passage left behind a glade thrumming with significance beneath the veil of lifetimes.

Matsui's mind reeled, struggling to process the encounter. Did Kugo’s trapped soul finally find a peaceful rest?
