Chapter 29: The Virgin

Originally a female, this creature has mutated into a zombie but is unlike ordinary zombies.

Her head is three times the size of an average adult's, split open at the top, with her brain protruding and wrapped around her skull. The brain’s convolutions writhe continuously, and there seem to be fleshy, wriggling worms crawling on it, creating a most repulsive sight.

Yang Mu hastily integrated the golden raw stone into his body. He didn’t feel any increase in strength and was uncertain about its purpose, but decided to collect it for now.

At that moment, the large-headed zombie suddenly moved and leaped out through the window.

This was the forty-fifth floor—falling from such a height would surely result in a fatal fall, right?

What was even more perplexing was why the large-headed zombie was fleeing instead of attacking him.

Yang Mu quickly ran to the window to look outside.

What...?

How could this be?

Below, the zombies had somehow amassed into a towering heap, nearly reaching the fortieth floor.

When the large-headed zombie fell, it landed on the pile of corpses and was enveloped, disappearing into the mound of zombies.

Yang Mu immediately realized that this large-headed zombie was a controller type, capable of commanding zombies, indicating it possessed some level of intelligence. This was dire!

Chaos erupted from below.

“Zombies are coming, run!”

“So many zombies! Hide quickly! Everyone, take cover!”

“We’re finished, it’s over.”

Yang Mu descended rapidly and squinted, noticing Xiang Hai setting up weapons nearby. He rushed over and said:

“There’s an anomalous zombie capable of controlling others.”

“No wonder the zombies below are actively climbing the building. Where is this anomalous zombie? How do you know about it?”

“I saw it just upstairs. Its head was enormous, and its brain was on the outside. It then jumped off and fled.”

“Upstairs? That’s impossible. We’ve conducted thorough searches; there shouldn’t be any zombies!”

Xiang Hai was puzzled, but Yang Mu was starting to piece things together. The appearance of these anomalous zombies must be related to these raw stones.

The blue raw stones created hunter zombies.

The golden raw stones produced the large-headed zombies.

So why didn’t picking up these stones turn him into a zombie?

Could it be that the stones materialize out of nowhere, and only the first person to come into contact with them transforms into an anomalous being?

Meanwhile, the zombies downstairs were now breaching the obstacles in the stairwell. Xiang Hai called out:

“We don’t have much ammunition left. My sister decided to come by helicopter, the fastest way to get here. However, we don’t know if she’ll encounter any zombie birds! Yang Mu, you seem capable. I entrust you with Number One and the half-zombie. I will hold off the zombies here. You should go to the rooftop.”

“How do you know I’m capable?”

“The people in your room were originally with us. I saw them enter a room on the sixth floor. The corridor was filled with zombies, yet you managed to rescue them. That proves you’re not only skilled but also very strong.”

“How do you know they didn’t escape on their own?”

Without waiting for Xiang Hai’s response, Yang Mu hurried back into the room, sighing at the sight of the house.

What a great place, and now he had to leave after just one night.

“Pack all the food into the backpacks, leave behind everything else, including clothes. Travel light; we need to get to the rooftop. This place could be overrun by zombies at any moment.”

Everyone’s faces fell, realizing the crisis had arrived so abruptly.

Following Yang Mu’s instructions, they quickly packed up. Yang Mu dressed Xiao Yao, putting on a mask and contact lenses, and led her outside.

The others hadn’t finished packing, but Qi Hao didn’t wait, and everyone had no choice but to follow in haste.

Outside, the crowd was chaotic. The Kamikaze Team had gathered all the survivors from the building, assembling over a hundred people on the upper floors.

Unauthorized duplication: this narrative has been taken without consent. Report sightings.

“Can’t we stay in the rooms?” Song Ren panted, catching up with Yang Mu.

“With a zombie that can control others, it can make zombies pile up and attack from outside the building. Breaking through glass is trivial. If we’re trapped inside, it’s certain death.”

“Will we survive on the rooftop?”

“It's also very dangerous... Song Ren, Liu Dongfeng, follow me.”

Yang Mu swiftly took out a screwdriver and an axe, beginning to dismantle the doors of the nearby apartments, taking apart each one.

"Wang Liang, Gu Dasen, move these doors to the elevator. Chu Hong, come over and hold the elevator; don't let it leave. Butterfly, Xiao Nai Gou, Ye Liena, search for nails. Find them in every apartment; we must have them!"

“I’m called Ye Liena Li.”

“Little girl, if you want to survive, stop dawdling!”

Everyone was confused about Yang Mu’s intentions, but his proven capabilities from the previous night made them trust his judgment amidst the zombie crisis.

Yang Mu quickly dismantled five doors, using the only functioning elevator to transport them to the rooftop.

After a frantic half-hour of back-and-forth transport, they had collected dozens of wooden doors. Butterfly was particularly helpful, finding plenty of nails.

The group then carried the doors one by one to the rooftop and stacked them in a corner.

On the rooftop, many people were watching the accumulating zombies and the ones advancing from afar, trembling in fear, some already crying out loud.

The Kamikaze Team members below were fighting and retreating, their ammunition exhausted, and obstacles scattered, forcing a hasty retreat upwards.

This was the apocalypse; just when they felt safe, a deadly crisis emerged in an instant.

Yang Mu deeply felt the gravity of the situation and vowed never to be complacent again.

He began assembling the doors, hammering nails to connect them together, reinforcing them with additional nails.

“It’s over, it’s over! Have all the zombies gathered here?”

“How did this happen? What do we do?”

“How do they know we’re up here? How do they know?”

“There’s nowhere to escape in or out of this building... We’re doomed!”

Everyone looked ashen, watching the zombies pile up to nearly fifty floors high, lamenting their fate.

Yang Mu paid no attention to the chaos outside, focusing solely on assembling the doors, having already joined ten doors together.

He continued his swift work with the precision of a skilled carpenter, driving nails effortlessly to secure the doors.

After an hour, Yang Mu’s creation was nearly complete. He had constructed a cylindrical structure.

The cylinder stood seven meters tall, with doors sealing both ends, leaving a half-meter by one meter and twenty centimeters opening in the middle.

“What do we do? The zombies are coming up!”

Chu Hong approached Yang Mu, gripping his arm and speaking with a trembling voice.

Yang Mu looked up and saw zombies indeed climbing to the rooftop.

He hurried to the corner of the wall and looked down.

Not only from that side, but zombies were also coming from all directions, countless in number.

The intelligent large-headed zombie was formidable—was it using brainwaves to control the zombies? Did it summon all the zombies within a few kilometers?

The ancient district had once housed eighty to ninety thousand people; how many had become zombies? And how many were now under the control of the large-headed zombie?

At that moment, Xiang Hai arrived beside Yang Mu, accompanied by several special forces soldiers, including the previously seen squad leaders Fang Hua, Han Dong, Guo Tiesheng, and Su Long.

Xiang Hai was covered in grime and blood, his face smeared with dirt and sweat, yet he wore a smile.

“This is... truly a miracle! Yang Mu, we’ve just met, and it’s a pity. Had we known each other earlier, we might have become close friends.”

“Really? I’m not easy to get along with.”

“I’m someone who enjoys interacting with others, but it’s too late now! The Kamikaze Team’s mission has failed. We’ve undertaken countless missions over the years without failure. We once vowed that we would never retreat, even if it meant death! We’re not like ordinary soldiers; we were selected for special forces training as teenagers, and for years our mission has been to become stronger and complete more arduous tasks. But this time we have failed... Take Number One and the half-zombie with you. I hope you can get them out.”

“What are you going to do? Your mission isn’t over yet, right? They are part of your mission!”

“This contraption you’ve made cannot accommodate so many people, and we lack the means to escape. Without your cleverness... We must stay behind to uphold the final dignity of the Kamikaze Team and share the fate of the people here!”

Yang Mu was stunned. He hadn’t expected to encounter someone like this in the world—someone who embraces death knowing full well it’s coming. It’s easy to speak of such bravery, but living it is incredibly difficult.

Looking at these soldiers, they must be the true saints.

Yang Mu remembered reading apocalyptic novels and seeing comments like:

“Garbage novel, can’t stand the saintly protagonist!”

“Saintly characters make me nauseous.”

“Protagonist should die!”

Yang Mu had once dismissed these “saintly” novels, but now he couldn’t help but admire these saints—they were indeed the most admirable people.

Sighing inwardly, Yang Mu knew he could never match their courage. His life had been hard-earned, and he had always lived just to survive, never willing to sacrifice himself for others.

Surveying the surroundings, zombies were about to burst forth.

Xiang Hai was right; Yang Mu’s creation could not hold so many people. If they took it, it would endanger others. So, they had no choice but to stay.

Without time for sentimentality, Yang Mu quickly lifted Chu Hong and threw her into the cylindrical opening, then ushered everyone else into the cylinder.

Chu Hong, Xiao Yao, Butterfly, Wang Bing, Liu Dongfeng, Song Ren, Ye Liena Li, Xiao Nai Gou, and Yang Mu himself.

The nine of them nearly filled the cylinder.

Xiang Hai, the handsome and young man, still smiled at the cylinder’s entrance.

Yang Mu furrowed his brow and looked at him through the opening, eventually raising his hand to salute.

“Xiang Hai, you are my confidant. Before we part, here’s three words for you: Truly a man!”

“Ha ha, farewell!”

As the words fell, a swarm of zombies charged forward.

Yang Mu lifted a wooden board previously placed in the cylinder to block the entrance and peered out through the gap.

In just one minute, the surrounding zombies had consumed the entire rooftop, merging all survivors into the zombie mass, including all Kamikaze Team members.

The zombies continued to accumulate, pushing against the cylinder.

Before anyone entered, Yang Mu had already tilted the cylinder against the wall in the corner.

As the zombies pushed, the cylinder tilted sideways against the wall.

The zombies continued to press, causing the horizontal cylinder to move and eventually roll down.

The entire building was engulfed by the sea of corpses, and the cylinder quickly rolled down atop the zombie mound.

Chu Hong felt the world spinning, dizzy, but her heart was clear.

God!

So this was Yang Mu’s plan—he anticipated the worst-case scenario, that the building would be consumed by zombies, and so he used doors to create this cylinder. Was he planning to lead them out of the zombie encirclement?

This man was incredibly clever! And so reckless! It was exhilarating!

Why was he such a Yang Mu?

Chu Hong once again questioned from the depths of her heart.

Over the past two years, what had she missed while dealing with the Wen family’s son-in-law?
