Prologue

A/N: This chapter is short because I kinda want to see what you all might think of my writing before I start posting seriously. I will post slowly, no more than two to three chapters a week, this might increase if people think I'm good enough for continuous posts.

I woke up floating in a dark, warm chamber of fluid.

Thump! Thump!

Thump! Thump!

A consistent pounding was all I could hear but for some reason instead of being frightening, it was soothing, to the extent where I fell asleep again.

Thump! Thump!

When I woke up again, I tried moving, but all I managed to do was twist slightly and give a soft kick which seemed to suck all my energy to do. Soon after, I embraced sleep again.

Thump! Thump!

‘Where am I?’ I thought as I regained consciousness. I had been floating in the chamber for a long time, I think. I have no way to measure how long I’ve been asleep nor how long I’ve been awake. In the darkness, a mere moment seems like an eternity.

Thump! Thump!

Thump! Thump!

Thump! Thump!

I’ve been awake for three thumps now, which is an improvement. I still don’t know where I am, but that is not the most worrisome part. The thing that worries me is that I don’t know who I am, where I’m from, nor how I got to where I am now. I try to move again but it’s still as ineffective as before. Ah...so sleepy!

Thump! Thump!

Over the past few sleep and wake cycles, I’ve been trying to gather my memories and I managed to unearth some information about myself. I still don’t know who I am exactly, but I do know one thing...

I should be dead!

----------------------------------------

On a very stormy night, a young man stood at the edge of a cliff overlooking an ocean. He was thoroughly soaked from head to toe though he did not seem to notice his plight as he blankly stared into the distance.

A sigh escaped his lips, and as his eyes shifted down to stare at the pistol help tightly in his right hand, he had a flashback.

“...Please! Don’t kill her! Kill me instead! It’s me you are after anyway!” A shrill voice screamed out as loudly as it could, “ Kill me!”

Inside a quaint house in a small suburban neighborhood in the middle of nowhere, a chilling scene unfolded. Two people, a man and a woman who appeared to be in their mid-twenties were kneeling on the ground, surrounded by a group of men dressed in black and carrying guns.

The young man’s eyes were red and streaming with tears as he saw the woman get dragged forward and a gun placed to her head. The woman looked him in the eyes, and he could see fear, horror, and resignation in her eyes, but even now, there was no hatred toward him.

Seated in a chair in front of the couple was a middle-aged man, with a wide scar running across his forehead. The middle-aged man stared at the young man and smiled before saying in a deep baritone,

“You did this to yourself Zero, all you had to do was kill her and move on. No one told you to get attached to the target, no one told you to leave the organization and go into hiding. You knew we would find you Zero, we always do.”

“Please, I’ve never asked you for anything in my life, I have served you faithfully and I have killed many people for you!”

The young man called Zero tried to crawl forward on his knees, but he was roughly dragged back by the men behind him.

“I beg you! I have  never failed a mission, I will return to the organization, I will kill whoever you want me to kill, I-”

“Now that’s where you’re wrong Zero,” The middle-aged man laughed as he interrupted, “You did fail a mission!” Then he gestured to the man holding the gun to the woman’s head. The man, who was tall, thin and bald, turned to Zero and gave a sinister smile while saying,

“You aren’t hot shit now are you Zero, always acting high and mighty, now you’re just crying like a little bitch, all for some whore you managed to get into your pants, now I’m gonna take her from you, so watch carefully!”

Zero glared fiercely at the man, though the effect was somewhat dulled due to the tears and snot dripping down his face.

“Number Two if you do this, I will kill all you!”  His teeth ground together as he said these words filled with murderous intent, “I will all of you!”

The woman, who was silently crying all this time suddenly shouted, “No! You have to run! You have to live! I love y-”

BANG!

The sound of gunfire tore through the night, startling the dogs in the neighborhood who all started to bark incessantly.

Thump!

As Zero looked at the body that had just fallen to the floor, his expression went slack in disbelief before a scream filled with absolute horror ripped from his throat,

“NOOOOOOOO!!!”

Lightning flashed and pulled the young man from his nightmare. It also shined some light upon him, showing that his entire body, including his clothes, was covered in blood. He lifted the gun, which was also drenched in blood, and stared at it with empty eyes, before pressing it to his temple.

Tears mixed with snot and rainwater rolled endlessly down his face, and as he stared up to the crying sky, a phrase, which had been stuck in his throat for a long time, finally slipped out,

“I’m so sorry!”

BANG!
