Mechanic Guide: Upgrade Spells

Detailed Explanation

of

Upgrade Spells

Upgrade Spells are Spell Cards activated from the Extra Deck by using 1 Activated Spell Card and stacking the other material Spell Cards from hand. All cards used here are real cards in the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG, except the Upgrade Spells.

Example 1: Basic

Purple Medicine

Upgrade Spell

"Red Medicine" + "Blue Medicine"

Increase your Life Points by 3000 points.

So for example this card would require a "Red Medicine" and a "Blue Medicine", both Normal Spell cards, to be either both in your hand or one in hand and one face-down on the field. The steps would be:

1.) Activate either "Red Medicine" or "Blue Medicine" from either your hand or face-down on the field.

2.) Allow for either player to Chain to the activation.

3.) Once the Chain Link of the card activated in step 1 would resolve (In this case Chain Link 1), you can stack the other material from hand before resolving the effect.

4.) Stack the Upgrade Spell from your Extra Deck that lists both materials, "Purple Medicine" in this case.

5.) Resolve the Upgrade Spell (The effect of the card activated in Step 1 will not be applied. Only the Upgrade Spell.). In this example, you'll gain 3,000 Life Points instead of 400 or 500.

Example 2: Carried Over Activation Conditions

Book of Abominations

Upgrade Spell

"Book of Life" + "Gravedigger Ghoul"

Choose 1 of the targets to Banish and Special Summon the other target Or Banish both targets and Special Summon 1 Zombie-Type monster from your Deck with a level equal to or lower than the combined total of their levels.

The targets will carry over once the Upgrade Spell resolves. Both "Book of Life" and "Gravedigger Ghoul" target 2 cards among the those in the Graveyards. So the steps for this card and any Spell that targets would be:

1.) Activate either "Book of Life" or "Gravedigger Ghoul" from either your hand or face-down on the field.

2.) Target 1 card in your Graveyard and 1 card in your opponent's Graveyard for "Book of Life" Or target 2 cards in your opponent's Graveyard for "Gravedigger Ghoul".

3.) Allow for either player to Chain to the activation.

4.) Once the Chain Link of the card activated in step 1 would resolve (In this case Chain Link 1), you can stack the other material from hand before resolving the effect.

5.) Stack the Upgrade Spell from your Extra Deck that lists both materials, "Book of Abominations" in this case.

6.) Resolve the Upgrade Spell. In this example, if you used "Book of Life" you can Banish the target from your Graveyard to Special Summon the card from your opponent's Graveyard, Or Banish both to Special Summon a Zombie-Type monster from your Main Deck. If you'd used used "Gravedigger Ghoul" you can Special Summon either targeted monster from your opponent's Graveyard and Banish the other one, Or Banish both to Special Summon a Zombie-Type monster from your Main Deck.

Example 3: Bypassing Invalid Activations

Rebirth Fusion

Upgrade Spell

"Polymerization" + "Fusion Sage"

Pick 1 Fusion Monster Card from your Extra Deck. Banish cards from your hand, field, or Graveyard listed on the Fusion monster then Fusion Summon it from the Extra Deck.

Upgrade Spells can be used even if its materials would normally be unable to resolve, but it must be possible for the Upgrade Spell to resolve. To summon "Charubin the Fire Knight" (Fire/Warrior/Fusion/Lv3/ATK 1100/DEF 800/Fusion Materials: "Monster Egg" + "Hinotama Soul") the following is possible:

Unauthorized use: this story is on Amazon without permission from the author. Report any sightings.

Game State.) Turn player has no cards in hand or on field except "Polymerization" and "Fusion Sage". His/her Graveyard contains "Monster Egg" and "Hinotama Soul". There are no remaining cards in turn player's Deck. "Charubin the Fire Knight" is in the Extra Deck.

1.) The turn player prepares playing "Rebirth Fusion" by activating either "Polymerization" or "Fusion Sage".

("Polymerization" would be an illegal activation due to there being no materials to fusion summon with. "Fusion Sage" would be an illegal activation due to there being no "Polymerization" to add from your Deck to your hand. Both become legal in this set-up since the other is in hand and "Rebirth Fusion" can be used during resolution.)

2.) Allow for either player to Chain to the activation.

3.) Once the Chain Link of the card activated in step 1 would resolve (In this case Chain Link 1), you can stack the other material from hand before resolving the effect (This is not optional as the resolution would be impossible otherwise).

4.) Stack the Upgrade Spell from your Extra Deck that lists both materials, "Rebirth Fusion" in this case.

5.) Resolve the Upgrade Spell. In this example, you will Fusion Summon "Charubin the Fire Knight" by banishing "Monster Egg" and "Hinotama Soul" from your Graveyard.

Hypothetical Interruptions

Example 1 Alt: Destroying the Activated Material Spell

Material Spells need to be on the field to be stacked (You cannot stack over spells that activated by Banishing themselves from the Graveyard). If you remove a material Spell Card from the field during the chain it is activated, it will not be possible to activate the Upgrade Spell. An example of a failed attempt to activate "Purple Medicine":

1.) You activate "Red Medicine" with "Blue Medicine" in hand, planning to upgrade to "Purple Medicine".

2.) Your opponent chains and activates "Mystical Space Typhoon" targeting "Red Medicine".

3.) "Red Medicine" is destroyed. The option to stack over it is lost.

4.) You gain 500 Life Points.

Example 2 Alt: Dodging Negation

Upgrade Spells share a Chain Link count with the activated material spell, but are not treated as the same card or activation. If your opponent attempts to negate a material Spell Card's activation, this will not affect the activation of an Upgrade Spell. However, a card like "Spell Canceller" or "Imperial order" that negate the effects of all spells on the field will negate the effect of an Upgrade Spells. Using the previous example for "Book of Abominations":

1.) You activate "Gravedigger Ghoul" with "Book of Life" in hand, planning to upgrade to "Book of Abominations".

2.) You target 2 cards in your opponent's Graveyard.

3.) Your opponent chains "Magic Jammer", which negates and destroys activated Spells by discarding 1 card. The effect of "Gravedigger Ghoul" will be cancelled.

4.) You can stack "Book of Life" from hand before "Gravedigger Ghoul" would resolve and be negated.

5.) Stack "Book of Abominations" above both cards. "Magic Jammer" was meant to negate "Gravedigger Ghoul", which is no longer the resolving card and is no longer treated as on the field to be destroyed.

6.) "Book of Abominations" resolves. From the targets of "Gravedigger Ghoul" you can Special Summon either targeted monster from your opponent's Graveyard and Banish the other one, Or Banish both to Special Summon a Zombie-Type monster from your Main Deck.

Example 3 Alt: Bypass Interruption

In example 3 it was stated you can activate Spell Cards in normally impossible situations as long as you will be using an Upgrade Spell in its place during resolution. If your opponent chain to your material activation with a card that makes it impossible to use the Upgrade Spell, neither the material spell will resolve, nor will you be able to stack the Upgrade Spell. For Rebirth Fusion the following can happen.

Game State.) Turn player has no cards in hand or on field except "Polymerization" and "Fusion Sage". In his/her Graveyard contains "Monster Egg" and "Hinotama Soul". There are no remaining cards in turn player's Deck. "Charubin the Fire Knight" is in the Extra Deck.

1.) You play "Polymerization" with "Fusion Sage" in hand, planning to upgrade to "Rebirth Fusion".

2.) Your opponent activates the trap card "Disappear", targeting "Monster Egg".

3.) The effect of "Disappear" Banishes "Monster Egg"

4.) The required materials to Fusion Summon "Charubin the Fire Knight" are no longer accessible for "Rebirth Fusion". You can no longer stack "Fusion Sage" over "Polymerization.

5.) Nothing else happens. After the chain is fully resolved "Polymerization" and "Disappear" go to the Graveyards.
