Chapter 4

Just so you know, there is a LOT of gore here.

[PART 1/2]

Cody, frozen near the grave. The two words 'Stop him' reverberate in there, like a pendulum in a bell. The wind picks up and now, it is whistling. The bushes still rattling and trees still dancing.

Suddenly, time freezes again. Every leaf is stuck in the air, without knowing it. The passenger fades in, "You gotta tell them about us." He says. "What, no! They can't handle that."

"Just tell them." He insists. "No!" Cody pushes him. "Then, I am sorry, kid." He says, without hesitating.

Silence falls. The wind stops. The siblings are beginning to shiver. The temperature drops rapidly, not-so-naturally. Time freezes again for Cody.

But very soon, it comes back. Along with that, his head feels lighter, like something just came off it.

The twigs begin rattling and dry leaves begin cracking. All of their heads turn towards the truck. They see a man. A man with a white coat, blue pants, and messy hair. The others wonder who that is, meanwhile, Cody recognizes him. "It's the doctor! Run!" He screams in an attempt to warn his siblings. He turns to his right and runs away from the action. Michael and Janet follow him in deep confusion. "Why are we running from him?" Asks Michael. "I'll explain later. Just run for now."

Blood races through their veins. Cody's hair flops over backward and flails in the air.

Around twenty into the running, Cody checks over his shoulder. His siblings are following him. But the doctor, to his surprise, is standing still where he identified him. He turns towards the doctor and comes to a slow, cautious stop. Then, from there, he begins screaming. "This is your brother's doing."

They all ignore the voice and keep running. The doctor looks at them in disbelief. "Let's play a game," he says "you guys, keep running and get caught and I'll kill you. Or stop, make a plan and I may not have to bonesaw you to death. You get sixty seconds. And I'll start chasing you.

Suddenly a storm flashes in. Raindrops so heavy that they feel like rubber bullets. Lightning strikes in an attempt to rip open a sky, and repeatedly fails. As it tries over and over, it gets louder and louder, at the rate of one lightning and thunder in every three seconds.

"We have no choice. Stop running, let's make a plan!" Exclaims Michael, when they're exactly 12 seconds in. They all come to a slow stop and form a circle. The plan begins to whisper into shape when they're 16 seconds in.

Meanwhile, the doctor, out of sight, hiding behind a blanket of rain stands there. Then lifts his right arm, and slowly, his forearm skin starts to gently shuffle around. But from it, comes a muffled rattling from bones being cracked inside. The outline of them shuffling in the form of large shards around inside. It is just barely visible in the thunder. Static electricity is created from that movement.

Soon, the same happens to his fingers. They begin to shuffle around. But unlike the arm, the fingers form sharp edges, and the palm, a circle. The fingers then crack off their position and slide onto the circular palm, slicing through the skin on the way smoothly, to evenly place themselves around the palm. That resembles a spiked blade. Lastly, his forearm splits from the middle, ripping the flesh from the middle, to create a slit of skin so the blade can spin. The bones keep shuffling. Strangely enough, there is no blood. It's pale on the outside and pink on the inside.

The doctor uses the moisture from his empty blood vessels as a conductor, and at the spot that used to be his wrist, he forms a coil to make an electromagnet. After that, he gathers the iron in his body, gets it into his wrist, and attaches it to the blade.

All of that combined forms a motor for the blade. As soon as he places the iron, the blade begins to spin. That's what he calls 'The Bonesaw'.

He begins counting down loudly for the siblings. "Five. Four. - Screw it. Here I come.!" He growls. Slowly, he begins to walk and as he does, he lowers the bonesaw to the road. Like a cat in its litter, it digs claws into the road, leaving a perfectly smooth, straight line as he walks.

Through the rain, a figure appears. A tiny figure of Cody, just barely visible. Right then, while still in eyeshot, the figure runs into a building, which is also in eyeshot. "Cody!" screams Michael, "Get outta there! That was NOT the plan!"

The same figure then runs out with blankets. Three blankets, all of the same pitch-black color and the same thickness. They flail over the siblings in the hands of Cody. They all stand just in the bare sight of the doctor. They put the blankets on their heads, and begin to walk in unpredictable directions. They scramble among themselves and then suddenly, they sprint in one direction; away from the doctor, parallel to his line of movement.

Once they reach a dead end, they all run in three separate directions. One goes right, one goes left, and one runs over the dead end.

At that moment, the doctor was thoroughly confused. He slowly walks over to the dead end, with his bonesaw screeching against the ground. Frustration stacks upon him. Then, he gets an idea.

He lifts his left hand, up to the level of his eyes. And "Click." goes his index finger, after sliding off his thumb. Suddenly, for Cody, the raindrops slow down and come to an abrupt stop. Flailing leaves on flailing trees stop flailing. The time freezes.

Little did the doctor know, Cody watched all that through the stitches of his blanket. Pressed up against a pitch-black big-rig.

In Cody's puzzled head, "Was that click just a coincidence?" is the only question reverberating. His doubts get confirmed when the Doctor continues to walk. He tries to wiggle out of the blanket but comes to notice that the blanket is frozen in time on him. Unable to focus on it, he is forced to stay under it, hoping that the doctor does not see him.

"How is he the only thing moving?" Wonders Cody. At that moment, he gets a flashback of the airport. Everything froze, but the suitcase and the conveyer did not. "This is not a coincidence. These moments are too similar to each other."

Then, a wave of pain and information flows into his brain. "There was never a passenger. I'm being played by him..." He thinks to himself.

"He is the passenger."

Before he could think further, a sharp sensation vibrates into Cody's back. As he looks down in shock, the bonesaw has gone through his belly, spinning in front of him, splashing his own blood on him.

[Part 2/2]

"Imagination does not survive against real things."

He stands there looking down at the blade in his belly as it spins. He feels no pain, due to the lack of calmness. He shivers and quakes so intensely that he can barely feel himself. The blade begins to now press against the bottom of his ribs. He feels the snaps, as they go, 'crack - crack' until the last rib. The sound was muffled. It sounded exactly like a person cracking a nut in their closed mouth, for every rib.

Just under his throat, the blade gets pulled back and taken out the back of his spine. His spine was cracked through with such precision that he was paralyzed and couldn't speak either.

Times goes back to normal speed. The blanket gently floated off and hovered down to the ground. Following that came multiple thuds from Cody dropping on the floor.

He lay there, feeling the pain and burn on the ground, as his blood pools around him. Tiny droplets get kicked up by the rain and paint his body. The doctor is nowhere to be seen.

In a few seconds, darkness caves in. And suddenly, in a black void, the noises just cut out. He feels himself stand up. Silence and blackness are all that surround him now.

A small girl appears in the distance, walking on nothingness. She turns ahead and begins walking. And in a blink, she disappears. With Cody thoroughly confused, he walks towards where she last was. Around ten steps in, she cuts back into sight. This time, he gets a glimpse at her. She's in a patient's surgical gown. And this time, she turns left and points at something.

He blinks. The girl disappears. "Listen carefully..." she growls in Cody's right ear. Spooked, he throws his head to the right, to see her magnified forehead, and under her forehead, bloodshot eyes stare at where he points. He begins panicking.

Suddenly, lightning flashes in the empty black void. He does not flinch when the lightning hits. As that happened, it vaguely reflected light off from something. It hits again, but now, he sees exactly what reflected the light at him.

A familiar person's shoulder next to another familiar person's shoulder. He recognizes them. "Mom, dad?" He tugs at his heartstrings. And then, in the form of smoke filling an upside-down bottle, they fade into sight. Leaning their heads against each other, faced away. His mom and dad.

Her mom, with beautiful blonde hair, in her favorite long red dress, and a pink lipstick under the crystal-blue eyes and straight blonde hair that flows straight down and just barely curls ahead at her shoulders. His dad, in peach shorts with a red Hawaiian shirt.

He begins to walk towards them. In sheer confusion, he asks, "I missed you so much. What happened to you?" A second later, his dad speaks out. "Oh my God. Look who it is! Cody! Oh. I see you've met Alice. She's a sweetie isn't she?" He says faced away. "This is Alice?" He asks.

"What's the story about her, dad?" "Well, two years and eleven months ago, she was killed. She's like you. A person with a special gift. Man, talk about a glass made of diamond. The passenger was performing experiments to make himself stronger using others' powers. He did that, and Alicia ended up stuck here. This void is your imagination, nothing more. We are all dead and just your memories." He replies.

Cody, with his jaw, stuck open, says, "Really?" "Yep." says his father. Then, his mother talks. She says, "Cody, I have to tell you something." His father interrupts, "Not now."

Ignoring him, she says, "We are dead. But you know that. It's not the accident that killed us. 'He'(the doctor) popped out of nowhere into the road. We crashed into him. Then, he is the one who set the car on fire."

Cody then says, "I know what I have to do then." he says. He turns and walks away.

"Okay doc, I need a way to trick you." he imagines.

"Got it," says Cody.

Meanwhile, "Cannot leave them to suffer now, can I?" the doctor says out loud. That exact voice and those exact words echo in the black void. Cody begins to panic. And suddenly, his parents disappear.

There's nothing left to do. Cody is still stuck in the void, while the doctor hunts his siblings with a hissing bonesaw. "There's got to be something to do to help them!" He screams at himself from within. His patience runs thinner and thinner every second.

"Found you." the echo mutters in the voice of the doctor. Cody swallows his heart at that moment and begins to panic even more. His fingers twitch, and he hears, "Ever imagined how it'd be like to live a long life? Well, sorry if you did. Clearly, you won't be living a full one. Now, focus on the blade. It is going to slowly claw into your belly and then, claw upwards. Then, just like your brother, you will be paralyzed, and on the floor in pain. Only, you won't be able to scream or do anything about it. The manager's dead by the way. No one is coming."

Cody then suddenly realizes something. The words he picked up were just 'imagine' and 'focus'.

He knows what to do.

Everything caves into silence. Soon, his heartbeat pierces through the silence, and at a very low volume, he hears it echo in his open chest.

Little does Cody know, "Imagination does not survive against real things."

He closes his eyes and begins focusing on real things.

Meanwhile, in the real world, the doctor stands in front of Janet when the blade is just an inch away from her chest, "JANET!" Screams Michael from a few feet away from her.

His feet repeatedly thud against the floor fast and hard, as he runs towards the doctor with a machete. He pulls the machete to his side in his right arm and gets ready to swing and slice off the bonesaw. Around a foot away from him, he swings sideways and the machete hits the arm. It goes just an inch deep, and suddenly, a wave of static electricity flows through the steel and zaps Michael. Michael passes out. The doctor leaves the blade in there.

Suddenly, metal begins to rattle behind Janet. It's the metal from the pitch-black big rig. It floats violently into the shape of a wall. The doctor, in disbelief, looks at it. He notices what is going on.

"You really think you can kill me using your powers kid? I trained you." He says. "Yep." Says Cody, through the speaker system in the rig.

"Have at it, kid."

He begins focusing on the wall. The doctor braces for an impact and begins spinning the bonesaw again. Looking at the bonesaw spin, Cody smiles and says, "Goodbye you son of a bitch."

He takes over the doctor's body by focusing on it and forcing his bonesaw to move and to get jammed into the doctor's belly. Right in front of Janet, inches away from her face, the bonesaw claws, digs, spins, and spews bloodless flesh onto Janet's face. It begins to slowly shift upwards, even after the attempt of the doctor pushing it down. He begins screaming out of pain.

He clicks his fingers and suddenly, Cody feels a wave of pain from his belly to the top of his chest.

The doctor undid the damage to Cody's spine. Now, Cody can feel all of the pain.

Cody's grip on his focus weakens, as he feels the pain. Yet, he does not stop. In desperation, the doctor screams, "You're going to get yourself killed doing this, you dumbass. Am I worth it?"

"You know everything about me. But what you don't know is, we'd kill for each other." He replies through the speaker system.

Cody pushes harder and harder through the pain till it feels like a baseball was jammed into his head. And finally, the bonesaw flings upwards. It slices through the doctor's head.

Like a book, it just falls open, side to side. And the doctor drops on the ground.

As a relief, Cody lets out a breath, but his life blows out with that breath. Darkness caves in and this time, he feels, sees, hears, or smells nothing. This time, he is truly and fully gone.

Michael wakes up, and Janet, terrified, walks around the doctor's now steaming body, runs into Michael with her arms open, and holds him tight, like a brother. Both of them shiver in each others' arms.

In the distance, she sees the lifeless vessel of what used to be Cody. She lets go, gasps, and begins sprinting selflessly towards Cody, with air hissing in and out of her mouth. Michael joins her in doing the same.

They shake him, tell him to wake up, and even beg for him to. But, the wrapping is just the wrapping. They drain their hopes and hours later, get ready for ending the Goodbye Day with another one.

Another two hours later, they finish burying him next to his parent's graves. Having said words of respect and love, they decide to call it a day and sleep next to the graves, on the cliff.

At night, Janet wakes up to a rattle behind the bushes. Leaves swim around her. She slowly gets up and rubbing her face, she moves towards the rattle, hoping it is a man with food.

The swimming leaves come to a gentle stop at where they are. Janet then hears a voice in her head. A familiar voice. From the wrapper comes the package. It says,

"Don't freak out. Shh- It's me.Cody."
