Chapter 3: Gilbert (Part 3)

Years passed quickly as their friendship grew stronger and stronger throughout the years.

2 years passed since their friendship bloomed. It was a sunny summer day when Lilian appeared in front of the Arscott mansion. Wearing the vibrant light blue dress that Gilbert brought her for her 15th birthday, to ask for his hand in escorting her to her friend’s family party that celebrated the birth of the family heir.

Gilbert laid on top of a pile of documents, all overdue by several weeks. ‘Where am I, who am I, why am I here?’ He asked himself meaningless questions using his time meaninglessly. Then, his butler crashed his door flung open and yelled, “Young lord, Lady Saunder is at the door looking for you!”

“Is that so…. Huh?... Wait, What? Why?!” Gilberts eyes widen as his hurried to put together something nice. After seconds of struggle, he finally felt good enough to stand in front of Lilian. He raced to the garden and picked up a bundle of white tulips.

Lilian waited at the entrance gate of the mansion. Her faced changed from smiling to frustration, back to a smirk and now to anger. Gilbert kicked open the front door of the mansion, flying to Lilian. But he had to stop and hide upon seeing her expression. She looked as if she’d kill someone, anyone that walked out of the door now.

“Fredrick,” Gilbert glurped, “How long has it been since she has been standing there?” he asked his Butler. “A-about 20 minutes my lord.” Gilbert gasped as he could imagine what’d happen to him if he had walked out with a smile.

While Gilbert struggled to find a way to make her feel better, her assistant, Anna, met eye with Fredrick. ‘Come out the back door’, she signalled to Fredrick. Fred nodded and grabbed Gilbert. “Sir, the back door.” Gilbert’s eyes lightened and they ran for the door.

Lilian angrily stomped on the floor, “Where could this rascal be?”

“My lady, his probably outdoors dealing with other matters.”

“Nonsense, Gilbert, work? That’s the funniest thing I’ve heard.”

Upon hearing this Gilbert crept up behind her and grabbed her shoulder, “Is that so, Lady Lilian?”

“G-Gilbert? Weren’t you in the house?”

“Well, you see, unlike the heir of Saunder, the heir of Arscott is busy with work.”

This text was taken from Royal Road. Help the author by reading the original version there.

Lilian’s eyebrows twitched as her eyes started to flame. “Is that so, Sir Arscott? Then may I ask what important matter you had to ignore the heir of the Saunder for so long?”

Gilbert got stoned as his head went blank and his face paled. Lilian could see that this was all a lie. Fredrick, behind Gilbert, could feel his blood pressure rising from the embarrassment of his young master. Anna could not hold back her giggles, watching her lady toying with the heir of Arscott.

Soon they all cracked up laughing on the floor.

Gilbert held out his arm, “Should we head into the mansion now?”

Lilian grinned and wrapped her arm around his, “Of course. Surely you weren’t trying to send back a lady that waited in front of the mansion for 30 minutes.”

“Of course not! Please, if I may escort you into the mansion.”

“You certainly may.”

They swung open the gate and stepped into the walkway, “Also, it was 20 minutes.”

They slowly giggled their way into the mansion.

Lilian sipped the honey tea and smelt the shades of flowers mixed together. Gilbert stared at her, gazing at her cheeks slight pink. She reminded him of a chipmunk, mouth full of sunflower seeds.

Finally, Lilian started speaking. “So… Gilbert, have you found a partner to escort to the Delia Party?”

Gilbert grabbed a handful of biscuits, “The Delia Party? Oh… about the newborn baby, right? No, not yet.”

“Then could you be my partner?” Gilbert choked on the biscuit, surprised he ask, “Me? M-me as your partner?”

“Yeah, since we’re friends.”

Gilbert turned towards Fredrick. Fred enthusiastically gripped both of his fists and whispered, “Fighting!”

Gilbert happily accepted the proposal.

The day of the party became closer and closer. A week before the party Gilbert went to meet Lilian in order to order a set of matching clothes. Lilian danced her way out of the house in her warm yellow dress, scented like Daffodil.

Gilbert blushed as her earrings daggled with bright shines of the sapphires. She looked like a beautiful seashell, alone on the beach, listening to the words of the clouds.

As Lilian ran out to meet Gilbert, she was amazed of how the red suit suited him perfectly. The maroon and deep blue mixed well, he seemed as if he was a ruby in the middle of the ocean, surrounded by sea creatures trying to take advantage of its shine.

“Should we go now?” questioned Lilian as she made her way away from Gilbert towards the carriage.

“Su-sure thing.”

They hoped onto the carriage and went to the store, which was run by Lilian’s older sister, Kristine.

Kristine could tell that they had feeling for each other but decided to keep quiet and watch these hilarious scene of events that kept happening between the two of them. They decided to go with the colours warm yellow and maroon. They had to make the trip as short as possible to lessen the awkwardness.

Shortly, the time came to when the party began.
