Chapter 1: The Sealed Past

Chapter 1

Adrian was about to start his breakfast when his mother handed him some letters. “Honey you’ve got some mail.” Adrian paused for a second and looked at the mail in front of him but continued his breakfast.

“Mom, my flight has been confirmed. I’ll be heading out tonight by 10.” Adrian informed his mother.

“How long are you going to stay this time?” Rachel asked his son.

“I don’t know mom, maybe a month or so until the branch opens up. I’ll go to the airport straight from the office.”

“Ok honey. Be careful and make sure you take care of your health.” Adrian was about to head out for his office when his mother called out to him and handed him the mail which he put in his laptop bag without even looking at it. He hugged his mother and went to his office.

Adrian Lewis was one of the youngest entrepreneurs and was the sole owner of a very famous restaurant chain. He had accomplished all this at a young age and now was considered amongst one of the most successful youths.

Adrian sat in his office and was buried neck-deep in work. He focused all his energy on his work which was one of the reasons for his success. He was going through some files when his phone started ringing.

“Yes?” he answered his phone.

“Sir it’s time for your flight.” His secretary informed him.

“Ok, I’m on my way.”

Adrian gave some instructions to his secretary and left the office to head out for the airport. He was sitting in his seat before take-off, he was about to drift into a deep slumber when he remembered he had some mail. He took the mail out from his bag and started going through it. All of them were mostly related to official matters then he found one that looked like a letter. It was addressed to his house but there was no return address on the letter, that caught his attention meanwhile the plane took off.

He opened the letter and the first thing that came to his mind was the smiling face of someone, someone whom he had tried to forget but knowing it was a futile attempt, he gave up. He could feel his heart starting to race and all of his attention was now caught by what was written in the letter.

Letter:

Hey,

This is Elle and today I want to write about the person who holds a special meaning to me and has a special place in my life but more specifically to the person who will never know this. I want to tell you how you have come to mean so much to me in such a short time. I wished for a forever with you yet our days spent together were numbered.

I realized a lot of things after I lost you and every second of every minute in every hour turned out to be a lesson; I never thought I could learn. You taught me about life about how I was capable of feeling so much yet I chose not to because whenever life wanted to teach me something, I just turned a blind eye to it, until you.

You were that someone I never thought I will find and then you became that someone I never wanted to lose and eventually you became the person I never could hold onto. There are a lot of things I want to change about our time together but there’s not a single moment I regret spending with you.

You are the biggest lesson that my life has told me and you are the reason I have changed so much yet you are the only one who will always have the biggest part of my heart reserved for only themselves. Always.

Unconditionally Yours,

Love Elle.

With every sentence that he read he could feel tears welling up in his eyes, accompanied by a heartbeat so strong that he was sure even the guy sitting a few seats away from him could hear. He could not help the rush of emotions that came after reading the letter. There were a lot of different ones he could feel but the most prominent ones were sorrow, love, and an audacious amount of longing for someone he thought he could not have.

He didn’t even pretend that he wasn’t crying he held the letter tightly and let the tears fall. It wasn’t just the letter that made him the way he was it was the memories, the moments in which he had lived his life to its fullest, and no matter how hard he tried to erase them, he could never forget them.

He was miles up in the air and there was no way he could contact anybody regarding the letters so, he waited patiently for the plane to reach its destiny. He was looking outside the window where he could see the clouds passing by and the only thing, he could think of was that smiling face.

He took out his wallet and from the hidden compartment in it, he took out a small picture. It was a picture of a group of people. There were 4 guys and 3 girls all smiling at the camera without a single worry in the world. Amongst all of them, his eyes fell on one girl. To him, that smile was the most beautiful he had ever seen in the world.

It took him to the memory of the day he first talked to her. It was during his college; in his fifth semester, he went to the girl with one of his friends.

“Hey Elle, it’s Adrian.” Elle couldn’t see how much he was nervous and his heart swelled a little bit more when he saw the slight blush rising up her cheeks. She was known to be shy and seeing this made Adrian’s heart skip a beat.

“Hey, Adrian.” She replied in a mild and sweet voice that was almost comforting to the ears.

“Can I borrow your notes for a while? I missed some classes because of my club activities.” Adrian asked Elle.

“Yeah sure but return them to me before exams.”

“Will do. Thanks.” With this Adrian took her notes and left.

He could remember that day clearly as it had happened yesterday. It wasn’t much but just remembering her smile and that cute blush he was mesmerized by the beauty of its simplicity.

After long-awaited hours the plane finally landed and the first thing Adrian did after coming down from the plane was to call his mother. His mother was an early bird so he didn’t feel any reluctance while calling her at 7 in the morning.

“Hey honey, did you reach your destination?” his mother inquired.

“Yes mom, but there’s something I wanted to ask you. Did you see who dropped the mail that you gave me?” He asked urgently.

“No honey, it was in the mail box. Why? Is there something wrong?” She asked worriedly.

“No, no everything’s fine. I’ll call you after my meeting.” He informed his mother and hung up before even hearing her reply.

Adrian felt lost after that call. He wanted to know how this letter got to him and who exactly delivered it to him but there was no return address and he couldn’t think of a way to trace the sender and hence with a heavy heart he went to his hotel.

He collapsed right away after entering his room. It wasn’t the lack of sleep or exhaustion that made him so tired. It was the letter and his emotions that he couldn’t control. He kept replaying the contents of the letter in his mind until sleep succumbed to him.
