PART 5: AVATAR CREATION

The Grand Duke of Fenix, Alice Blodeuwodd Duke Fenix.

Month 2, day 13, UT 8992 [00:36]

Yggdrasil Game, Royal class Private room #002.

"In order to maintain balance within the simulation world, Yggdrasil requires all connective mind abilities like 'Gestalt', 'collective consciousness' and others for all players." Oicon declared, its bluish flame continued its flare, " Alice Blodeuwodd Ducal Fenix, do you consent to Yggdrasil to restrict 'Mind networking' ability?"

Hearing those words left me speechless, and I seethed in anger, but my thoughts reigned over my emotions. Mind Networking symbolizes the dignity of the royalty and nobility’s image; it signifies power, authority, and ability- yet I was asked to restrict this ability.

No. It has been years since I previously played a simulation game, so my information regarding these agendas was outdated, and as such, I may offer different views concerning this restriction. Taking those thoughts as medicine, I calmed myself down. However, it is undeniable that there were no restrictions that were as outrageous as this..

I pointed a glare at Daehl before asking, "What is the stance of the Imperial Guardian house in this matter?"

Daehl stood up from his seat, something that I found unusual. He cleared his throat before speaking with conviction in his voice.

"I believe most of the nobility, as well as royalties, perceive this as a challenge. While others think of it as a way for our minds to rest. However, it is also crucial to understand the traditions the royalties and nobilities hold, especially those in positions that govern territories. Traditionally, such actions are considered a defilement of the image that a noble or a royal had built, and they are deemed equivalent to acts of treason. Therefore the Grand Duchess of Fenix, Alice Blodeuwodd Fenix, is well within her rights to exercise her freedom to act as she desires, with the unwavering support of the Aetherian Families." He added firmly.

I was never the type to take action regarding these kinds of matters, but I couldn't help but question, "Representative of the Frontline and Development Studio, do you intend to tarnish the reputation of those superior to you?"

Oicon lowered its floating body, "I sincerely apologize for my previous statement. Our intention is not to tarnish the reputation of the Aetherian Empire, nor do we dare to commit treason. If you allow this representative to clarify misconceptions, it would bring great benefit to all those present."

"Very well," I said, leaning back as I supported my chin with a hand.

"At the recent Simulation World Association annual event at 8970, it was discussed and decided that real and simulation worlds should be kept separated. The goal is to foster a sense of uniqueness and explore what it truly means to be different. If your avatar's race in the simulation world differs from the real world, it should exhibit distinctive characteristics. While our intentions are not to disrespect our rulers, we firmly believe that creating a new world does not simply extend our lives, but offers a fresh realm to be experienced."

Right. I was convinced. For some reason, it reminded me of a particularly unfair experience I had during Last Ark. It is quite unjust to compare a single mind to a mind connected with a network of minds.

Perhaps people are searching for new ways to entertain themselves, I found it quite understandable, but for them to restrict themselves was something unexpected. I mean, why should they bear this restriction? Is it fun?

"Fair enough." I nodded, "However before I give my agreement, I would like to inquire about any Aetherians who may have chosen not to comply."

I eased back into the chair, letting myself be more lax as I rested my hands in the armchair. Meanwhile, Oicon responded, "Thus far, we have successfully persuaded all the nobles and royal classes that have logged into the game, and the majority of first-class have readily agreed."

"Wonderful. If there are people that you cannot convince otherwise, I'll be willing to lend you a hand in exchange for a favor."

A look of shock crossed Daehl's face, but Oicon carried on, its bluish flame flickering with animation. Daehl focused his attention on me, clearly seeking an explanation.

"Are you going to condone these deceitful tactics?" Daehl inquired, a face mixed with confusion.

Ordinarily, individuals in positions of power have the freedom to do as they please and exert influence over those beneath them. More so, it is also possible to seek assistance from someone of higher rank and have their judgment prevail. These playful tactics were occasionally employed during my military training, and there were instances when I found myself involved in frivolous events doing such.

I can only surmise that Yggdrasil has been paying individuals in higher positions to persuade those who do not adhere to their policies. However, I don't believe that Daehl, a being of a lower rank than mine, has the ability to convince me. After all, the only person who has the potential to convince me otherwise is the Ruler of the Aetherian Empire.

"I do not pass judgment on what is good or evil. However, having the ability to take action is more valuable than having the power for decor," I explained, "Furthermore, the association is not acting for their interest, but for the benefit of everyone, no?"

I paused before continuing, "I found that aspect very commendable."

"Thank you very much, your Grace," Oicon's warm vocals overlap with its mechanical voice.

With a wave of a hand to reciprocate its thankful expressions, I continued speaking, "Well then, I consent to this restriction."

"Agreement recorded." Stellar Unity and Moonthee whispered in their seats.

"Lastly, in order to maintain balance within the simulation world of Yggdrasil, Yggdrasil requires every player to have certain limitations on players' Conscious Augmentation ability. Alice Blodeuwodd Ducal Fenix, do you consent?" Oicon inquired.

That is quite terrible.

I asked, raising a brow, "Is this the same reasoning as the previous one?"

"Yes," Oicon confirmed as it bobs its flaming orb up and down, "It was discovered that players who excel in Conscious Augmentation perform significantly better than those who are not. Due to this factor, the Simulation World Association placed this limitation."

"And, to what extent do you limit Conscious Augmentation?"

Despite their desire to impose limitations, I cannot help but feel restless when considering Conscious Augmentation- I found it difficult to accept their terms. After all, it's an innate ability I had honed and exploited over the years. Words alone cannot fully express the praise I have for this ability; not only does it allow me to persevere through thousands of documents, but it also empowers me to multitask while completely comprehending everything at once.

Oicon explained, "To achieve balance, we set the limitations based on the average proficiency of the players' Conscious Augmentation. Each player will receive an upper limitation equal to the average."

"Fair enough. I consent to these limitations." I said.

"Agreement recorded..."

"We have concluded the end of this protocol," Oicon declared, gently lowering its floating body, "Thank you for your cooperation and time, Your Majesty. The terms we agreed upon had been beneficial for both parties. I extend my gratitude to Daehl Shimaka Aether Cosmos, Stellar Sight Unity, and Monolith of Fenix for attending this protocol."

As Oicon's words resonated through the chamber, Daehl applauded while other spheres bobbed up and down in their seats in agreement. Sensing the collective satisfaction, I rose from my chair and declared, "I conclude that the protocol has reached its end."

..

.

Instantly, I found myself standing in the Aetherian's dream lobby. It felt like the meeting had been an illusion, but the information from the protocol that was registering in my mind proved otherwise. Quiet reigned the room for a brief moment before the classical music flooded my ears, leaving me frozen amid the endless land. I looked down at my hands, clenching them to test whether or not the Virtual Sensory Simulation Synchronization was working properly.

Feeling the touch of my skin, I deemed it was working perfectly.

Great.

I cannot express the amount of terror whenever the Virtual Sensory Simulation fails to synchronize. Countless lives were claimed by delayed auditory, while failed taste synchronization has led to the creation of repulsive, cursed foods. The list of horrifying consequences seems to stretch on indefinitely.

But that was the situation years ago, and the technology has developed significantly. Yet, for some reason, I remained doubtful.

24? How terrible.

While I had anticipated the ratings to be high, I struggled to come to terms with this reality. The limitations were high enough that it was not providing any benefits and instead became a troublesome nuisance. This led me to question why not restrict it entirely. I would have been more accepting than a mere quarter of Conscious Augment. What can this limited quarter achieve? Reflex enhancement? Emotion Control? Memory recollectivity?

Is this perhaps a challenge too?

I cannot help but mock Daehl's words that echoed in my mind. This is insufferable! I cannot fathom why they would willingly agree to limit themselves. Despite these limits gnawing at the core of my existence, I reluctantly pushed aside this ever-growing vexation and forced myself to continue.

What is the time rate of the lobby and the game?

「 - Answer. Both lobby and Yggdrasil are operating at a 30-time acceleration rate.」

The Time Acceleration Rate was faster compared to the Last Ark, improving by threefold. That meant spending 60 minutes in Yggdrasil would be equal to a mere two minutes in reality. If my mind serves me correctly, Imperial House had a standard 10-time acceleration rate, and since I spent more or less 3 hours in that room, 18-19 minutes should have passed in the real world.

Proceed to the avatar creation.

Commanding such, a familiar entity appeared before me - a gray sphere devoid of any features.

「 - Noticed. Would you like to create your avatar from scratch or use your real-life body as a reference? 」

Hm? Odd. Dianna should have uploaded my avatar to the console. System follow it up.

「 - Noticed. Would you like to use the "Don't-forget-my-suggestion-Master." avatar uploaded by operator Didii? 」

The gray sphere underwent a transformation, resembling the avatar Dianna crafted. A white veil draped beneath the hat concealed the avatar's face, while its long white hair flowed down to the waist, complementing its pale skin. The avatar wore a standardized imperial uniform with sleek white pants and sported a tight boot.

I moved the veil with my fingers to peek through, and to my surprise, I saw a face that resembled my own, except its hair and pupils were now a striking white color. Getting closer for a better look, I couldn't help but admire the exquisite craftsmanship by Dianna. Intricate golden patterns adorned the veil, referencing the church of Maatianity and symbolizing the concept of head or representative. An avatar befitting for me in a Ghost Race, it was no wonder that Dianna specifically asked why.

I knew I could rely on Dianna's sense of fashion, as she not only made way for the avatar to fit my race but also designed it in a minimalist yet overbearing manner with profound meaning. However, remembering the title of this avatar, I cannot help but chuckle.

Yes, I will use this for my avatar.

「- Noticed. "Don't-forget-my-suggestion-Master" has been applied to the current avatar canvas.

Noticed. Avatar confirmed.」

As the system continued its monologue, my body began to emit a radiant glow, signaling my transformation into the avatar standing before me. Out of thin air, a veil hat materialized and settled upon my head, causing my vision to be subtly distorted. Simultaneously, the Code Uniform I had been wearing melted into a thick liquid before seamlessly molding itself into a Standard Imperial Uniform.

「 - Noticed. Due to safety, health, and risk concerns, a biometric scan will be imposed as to the requirements of the Imperial Laws.

Would you like to read the terms and conditions from the Frontline Development Studio?」

"This..."

As words escaped from my lips, a flood of memories resurfaced. I recalled the New Year event when the bill was deliberated upon by the esteemed members of the Imperial Head of Galactic Government and the Central Councils. To my surprise, the bill was given a lot of attention and passed swiftly.

Yes.

Noticed. Due to the assessment, the built-in med bay risk measures and emergencies updated, and the independent avatar Virtual Sensory Simulation parameters adopted.」

Nodding in response to the system's monologue, I silently recalled my previous Medical risk evaluation. I am uncertain how accurate the Dive evaluation of my health is, but the results were relatively similar.

When the monologue ended, several hologram windows appeared before me. Among the windows, there was one that was blinking repeatedly as if it was demanding my attention.

「 - Noticed. Proceed to Racial Affinity and Compatibility Appraisal?」

Oh? This? Very well.

I remembered this function when I created my first avatar in Last Ark. To begin with, I was invited by Vanessa to play a Last Ark, and I was a complete novice who had no prior information regarding Simulation games. Fortunately, the game had this function that predicted my comfort playstyles and the likes. Since then, I have never thought of changing to other races.

Due to my previous experience, I highly anticipated the results this time. Once again, my body began to glow brightly until a window appeared before me, presenting a list of races ranked by my compatibility and affinity towards each race.

「 - Spirit : Compatibility 100 : Affinity 97 :

Ghost : Compatibility 98 : Affinity 98 :

Elemental : Compatibility 96 : Affinity 98 :

Dragon : Compatibility 98 : Affinity 96 :

Unauthorized tale usage: if you spot this story on Amazon, report the violation.

Gryphon : Compatibility 97 : Affinity 95 :

Ravehin : Compatibility 98 : Affinity 93 :

..

. 」

How unexpected. I wholly expected the same results, but it would seem the spirit race ranked first on the list, as it was second previously. What ended up being second on the list was the ghost race. Under it were other races that I am acquainted with, but there are several I have never heard of like Fipedorn, Jaslrils, and many others. I chose not to bother reading about other races since I was not interested in them in the first place.

Give me information about the Ghost race.

「 Race: Ghost

Magic is my nemesis: Ghost is extremely weak against magic. It decreases magic resistance and increases magic taken significantly. 」

This vagueness...

There was nothing more vague in the entire universe than the descriptions in the Simulation world. While I understand that players have different capabilities despite similar abilities, I find it amusing. Looking at the description may not hold any deeper meaning, but it does provide a general understanding of these abilities, which I find quite similar to the ghost race in Lost Ark.

However, there are terms that I don't understand, such as 'Medium' and 'Boundary'. Based on the context, I can only infer that they refer to some sort of realm or domain. Based on Last Ark, I assumed the Boundary would be the spiritual realm while the Medium is the living. Not only that, there are two status ratings that I have never seen before.

I will choose the ghost race.

I had no reason to deviate from my comfort, so I finalized my decision. There may come a time when I decide to create a new avatar with a different race, but that is far in the future. As this thought crossed my mind, the avatar flashes in the light as if signaling it is implementing the ghost race.

While I was observing the avatar's changes, another window appeared.

「 - please select Racial synchronization level- 」

So this is what Dianna had mentioned before.

The hologram displayed five selections: Origo, Farrago, Medius, Mar, with Purus as the final option. That said, I don't know what these selections mean. I contacted the system to request more information regarding the Racial Synchronization.

「 - Racial Synchronization refers to the degree of similarity between the user's avatar and its original race. A higher level of synchronization ensures a more authentic representation of the avatar's race. Depending on the synchronization levels, certain modifications will be made to the user's avatar to enhance its accuracy. For instance, the avatar's physical properties, features, and appearance. 」

Oh? That's what she meant.

At first, I mistook it for a way to evolve the avatar's race, but once I learned about the details, I corrected my information as it became clear. I recall the video that Dianna shared with me, where the presenter selected an Aqrabuamelu race and maximized its synchronization. As a result, the avatar transformed into a captivating human-scorpion entity. However, when the presenter inherited their real-world race, their appearance changed to resemble an Ajin race, indicating their original race, with a scorpion tail hanging behind.

Max it.

In a blinding flash of light, the avatar underwent a transformation, seemingly synchronizing to its original state. Suddenly, the distinct scent of blood filled the air, capturing my attention. I noticed the veil that once had a majestic presence was now marred by numerous holes. Peeking through one of the openings, I caught a glimpse of a transparent figure with black, pupil-less eyes and a mane of fuzzy black hair.

Is this what a Ghost looks like? As far as I know, modern ghosts don't look like this.

---

「 - Noticed.

Due to Purus's condition to synchronize, the avatar has been modified.

Noticed. Ghost appearance traits applied.

Noticed. Ghost negative traits applied.

Noticed. Ghost positive traits applied.

Please confirm the avatar application.- 」

Usually, I would instinctively agree to applications like these, but I found myself hesitating in a way that was difficult to explain. Was it because of its appearance, or was it a deep-seated fear that my subconscious was trying to overcome? Furthermore, as I read through the newly added traits, my hesitation in making a decision grew stronger.

Horror or whatever this avatar is portraying, I care little about this fear as I had faced much worse than this. Recalling the memories of hideous monsters, I managed to convince myself.

As I continued to ponder, my gaze fixated on the avatar's foot, only to find them missing from sight. Instead, the body seemed to defy gravity suspended mid-air with an otherworldly aura.

!?

Summoning every ounce of courage within me, I reluctantly agreed to the system. As if in response, a warm, ethereal glow enveloped my entire being. Before my very eyes, I witnessed the world draining from its colors, leaving my vision only to see black and white. All the while, the classical melodies played in the background, their once vibrant sounds now muffled and distant. A sense of unease washed over me, yet it never felt discomforting.

Despite the monochromatic sight, the series of windows that lined before me was unconstrained by the racial traits the ghost has. My eyes quickly darted across, searching for the particular window.

「 - Would you like to inherit your real-world race?」

Found it.

「 - Noticed. Due to the influence of your real-world race, your avatar has evolve.

Noticed. Avatar has successfully evolve into a Phoenix remnant.」

Without any hesitation, I immediately agreed. Although I do not particularly dislike the synchronization of a Ghost, the discomfort it brings is unpleasant. Additionally, I can't help but notice a slight deviation in the system's monologue - evolved?

How odd.

Once again, my body was engulfed in a warm, green light, transforming into the shape of... my previous form? As I looked down at my hands through the veil, I realized that even the avatar had undergone a transformation. I carefully examined the avatar, treading around it before eventually coming to a stop in front of it.

Lifting the veil, my attention was immediately drawn to its flowing red hair, cascading down to its waist. Its striking black eyes, with white iris, triggered a sense of familiarity, reminiscent of certain familial traits. Puzzled, I couldn't help but question the purpose behind maximizing the synchronization. Perhaps I am experiencing what it means to be a Phoenix Remnant?

Wait a moment.

I realized that I didn't know any details of my current race and hurriedly requested information from the system.

「 Race: interreality Remnant

Specie: Phoenix Remnant

Description: Here is what lies the past, the present, and the future, and forever it may be. Their ashes remain for eternity.

Status rating:

Constitution: B/A Dexterity: E/E Wisdom: inherit

Strength: C/B Will: B/A Intelligence: inherit

Agility: C/C

Racial Traits:

interreality form: A form that is unrestricted by the level of reality. An interreality Remnant can navigate through the Boundary and Medium with flexible properties.

Arise from ashes: Here lies their ashes of death. Here lies their nest and their egg. Here is what lies where they will rise.

Allies of the Fire: For Fire, they obey the words related to the Phoenix.

A Fiery Blood: The Phoenix Blood lies dormant. Despite a remnant of the Phoenix, their blood persists and excludes abnormal properties in the body.

Remnant possession: A remnant enters the consciousness to steal control of the body.

Synonymous Radiance: What remained is the radiance they once had, without the proper flow of the Phoenix Blood in their veins. Their emotions light their bodies uncontrollably.

Liquid is my nemesis: Remnant Phoenix is weak against liquid properties. Drastically decreases resistance to liquid significantly and increases liquid damage significantly.

Magic is my foe: Phoenix is weak against magic. Drastically decreases resistance to magic significantly and increases magic damage significantly.」

Information is supposed to be informative. As such, this is very unique.

However, it would seem that becoming a Phoenix Remnant dismisses several abilities that I expected to have as a Ghost, or rather, replaces them. The interreality form is what I assume allows me to phase into different reality . For instance, the Medium or the Boundary that it previously described.

Nonetheless, these are only primitive assumptions and they may be different from the actual effect. I slightly hesitated moving forward with this avatar's uncertain abilities, but there was no harm in testing its abilities and creating a new start later.

Shifting my attention, I looked at another window that was blinking repeatedly.

「 - Select Starting equipments -」

Provide me a list of rifles - preferably Arkth-base rifles.

For someone like me, skilled and talented, it was only natural that I am capable of using arkth weapons without consequences. In fact, these weapons suit me the most as I can cleanse the recoil faster and have an adaptive mind.

「 - No results.」

Wait, what do you mean by no results? Are there no arkth guns? Then show me guns

「 - 1 Results.

Handcannon.」

Handcannon? What is that? And why is there only one gun?

I stood there, baffled, filled with disbelief. A sudden recollection of the game's description crossed my mind, mentioning its primitiveness. However, I couldn't fathom just how far they had taken it. No, no, no. That can't be. That is impossible. That is outright wrong. My mind is obnoxiously running through ridiculous scenarios. Not only had they restricted my Conscious Augment, but they also had a backwater setting for a world.

The looming sense of unease brought a wave of anxiety. Without the Mind Networking ability, it is impossible to confirm my assumptions. Regardless, I should expect otherwise.

Display the Handcannon.

An object materialized before me, revealing a long metallic handle with a nozzle at the head. Is this some kind of spear? What is Maat's abomination is this? How can this be classified as a gun? How does one eliminate the opponent with this? Should I bash it upon someone's head?

「 Name: Handcannon

Description: The first cannon that can be carried by hand. Designed by Caitlyn J. Rheas.

Augments:

Weight reduction Augment:

Projectile enhancement Augment

Unbreakable soul-bound Augment

3 Slots available.」

Oh, for fuck sakes.

Of course, I should have expected that. It's utterly ridiculous! Why would they provide me with such vague details in the first place? Why do Simulation games make this nonsensical description? It's absurd! Should I go to their Association and smash their heads with this handcannon-whatever metallic stick?

Disappointed by the lackluster details, I swiftly directed my focus towards the equipment selection. I commanded the system to generate a list of equipment compatible with me, just anything but the metallic stick.

「- The Qliphoth ruin bell replica

The Blade of Nar Family replica

The Tyrvilad Staff ... 」

As the list goes on, the first items caught my attention with their repeated blinking and contrasting background color. Intrigued, I hinted at my interest in the Ruin Bell, to which the system responded by revealing its details.

「- 1 comment from "Don't-forget-my-suggestion-Master" avatar data.

"If you are reading this, then that means you have decided to use the avatar, either because you have no idea how to create it or because you are too lazy to make one. The Ruin bell is a good weapon that not only matches the avatar's aesthetic but compliments your play style. P.S.: This is a sound-based weapon, so it will only affect targets that can hear the bell. In case of emergency, smack it against their head *smiley_face* *heartx10*." By operator Didi.

Qliphoth Ruin Bell Replica 」

As I delved deeper into the contents, a sense of amusement washed over me upon reading Dianna's unexpected comment - I wasn't aware such a feature existed. Brushing off her rudeness, I proceeded to request the information from the system.

「- Name: The Qliphoth Ruin Bell Replica

Description: A replica of the Qliphoth Ruin Bell. According to the legends, it was one of the relics used to flood the Nore River.

Augments:

Conscious Targeting Augment

Debuffing Augment (Blindness, Hex, Poison)

Unbreakable soul-bound Augment

3 Slots available.」

It's hard not to notice that this one offers more details compared to the other. It's frustrating because the information the game provides is limited, while the other is simply nonsensical. Hold on, I wonder how Dianna obtained knowledge about my play style. It makes me curious how far she takes her research on me.

Typically, I prefer play styles that revolve around damaging support roles, particularly those capable of inflicting gradual damage over time. This leads me to often opt for Arkth base weapons, as they possess the unique ability to crystallize the bodily fluids of the target as they are damaged.

Apply it.

There is no need for me to disregard Dianna's suggestion completely. In case anything goes awry, creating a new avatar is always an option. Suddenly, a bell materialized on the avatar's belt, prompting me to check my waist, and I also found one dangling on my belt.

I glanced back at the series of holograms, I noticed that none of them were blinking any longer, indicating the necessity for the said avatar had been fulfilled. Although I have been informed that it is not obligatory to complete all the blinking windows, it's not something I would do.

Save the Avatar.

「 Noticed. Name your avatar to confirm.」

Name... The avatar looks enigmatic but is covered in pure white clothing. Alice... The avatar's name would be Alicia White.

「 Noticed. Alicia White's avatar is completed.」

Enter the world.

「 Noticed. Alicia White has no origins in the world. Please select the starting scenario.」

Starting scenario? That's new. I wonder what this is about. I affixed my gaze to a window that appeared, which had two choices.

「 World Arise: I arise a new.

Description: Spawn into the world.

Gain: Gain a HUD map.」

Not this shit again.

「 Goddess Call: I heed her summon

Description: Answer the call of the Goddess

Gain: starter house in Player Dimension, starter ship.」

Again. Very wonderful. Delightful. A very informative, and it cannot get any better!

If interpreted literally, "World Arise" could imply the possibility of entering a dangerous location within the world. On the other hand, "Goddess call" can be assumed that you would enter a safer area. However, the first choice offers a HUD map, it can be inferred that the player does not possess a HUD map otherwise.

Go with World Arise.

The choice was clear - I could always acquire ships, houses, or whatever else later on. It was evident to me that taking a "World Arise scenario" would provide me with the benefits when compared. Afterward, I was prompted by another two selections.

「 Possession: Trail for history

Description: Spawn into the world with kins, or to your natural habitat with familiar kinds.」

Oh?

「 Spawn: A lone Trail

Description: Spawn into the world alone in the labyrinth. 」

This is quite interesting.

In Last Ark, players usually spawn in random locations, so seeing this new feature piqued my interest. Even more so when the feature to inherit your race is possible, I almost want to create a new avatar just to see the Phoenix's trail for history. However, there is always next time.

I made a mental note to do that when I have free time.

Let's do "Possession a trail for history."

「 Confirmed starting scenario.」

「 Entering Yggdrasil.」
