Volume 2: Chapter 1: Awake (Part 1)

‘He is still alive. I can hardly believe it’

Rene could only stare at the wounded person before her.

How can anyone take this much damage and still survive?

His body was not exactly strong, as far as she could tell, but he kept clinging to life with relentless tenacity.

If his life was held by a rope, he kept refusing to let go.

After finding him barely alive, she managed to treat his injuries, apply potions and ointments to his flesh, and bandaged up his entire body.

Now he bore a striking resemblance to what people in a distant country referred to as a mummy. Except in his case, he was still breathing.

“You poor thing”

Rene put her hand upon the injured person’s head.

He was heating up like crazy, almost as though there was a great fire within him. Rene was not even sure he would survive through the night.

“Akara sensei….please….don’t go….”

‘Akara? Who is that? He keeps uttering that name over and over’

Rene could only conclude that this ‘Akara’ person was someone who is very dear to this man.

“Sensei….No!”

Without any warning, the injured man grabbed Rene’s hand.

His grip was tight.

It was as if he was desperate to not let go.

She could feel the pain in his heart.

It was overwhelming, even more so than the physical pain he was currently experiencing.

For that reason, Rene put her hand upon his, to soothe his pain as much as she possibly could.

“Everything is going to be all right. Everything will be fine….”

It was the same mantra she kept telling herself when her entire party, save for her, was annihilated. Who would have thought that she would be using those same words to comfort a man who was on the brink of death?

“It will be all right. Everything will be ok…”

The more she kept saying it, the more fake her words sounded.

One of the abilities that Rene possessed allowed her to see into the emotions and memories of the person by physical contact. It was something of a talent of hers.

Granted, the ability was not perfect. It only allowed her to see the fragments of the person’s mind, but it was enough for her to tell exactly what happened to this sad man.

Just seeing how he was struck down made Rene tear up.

Even then, he kept on fighting against the inevitable.

She fully expected his hand to go limp and let go as he succumbed to his injuries.

But instead, he held on to her hand, with absolutely no intention of letting go.

“So strong…My hand is going limp from his grip”

It hurt. But she knew that was nowhere near the pain he was feeling at this very moment.

“I hope you wake up soon”
