Chapter 6

What monsters would we face the first night?

If this beta test was anything like the original Fantasy Survival, then it would be something slow, small, and large in number.

"Don't kill it yourself unless you really have to!"

I yelled from afar.

"Let Gob do it!"

I was letting Gob kill off as many monsters as possible, and not letting the other party members get kills.

Why was I doing this?

"Aerin! Cover Gob!"

A slime was flanking our goblin, but he was already busy with two slimes in front of him.

Twish.

An arrow flew out of the elf's hands and hit the slime in the air, stopping its jump towards Gob.

"Good job."

I acknowledged the archer.

Upon being shot the slime was aggroed. Rather than moving towards Gob, it started moving towards Aerin.

Now, had we given Gob enough time to deal with the two slimes?

I checked my sword and made sure that I could unsheathe it. Then I grabbed my shield and readied myself.

Gob was still fighting a slime.

Iris was healing and buffing Gob.

Alex and Lily were attacking and debuffing any new slime that came through the gate.

The bouncing slime was making its way towards Aerin.

The slimes were slow enough─and weak enough─that it would have been more efficient for each of us to try and kill off as many as possible.

Maybe Iris the priestess, who had very little attacking options, could have paired with me, who had zero experience fighting monsters.

But here's the thing. Agile melee characters were key in Fantasy Survival.

One. Gob was the only such character on our party.

Normally, a goblin would be useless because he wouldn't take any of your orders.

"Gob! Once you're done with that, come over this way to finish this one off."

"Yes, boss."

Gob and I snarled and hissed at each other using a goblin language. The ability [Translation & Interpretation] allowed me to give orders to Gob, so he was able to act as just another hero in the party.

Two. Goblins were stronger than most human heroes, outside of, say, the barbarian.

Even then, goblins grew at a faster rate than humans heroes. Every level up they would get more points.

I have no idea why they put this in the system, but some MeTubers made use of this gimmick.

They let an AI play Fantasy Survival over and over again, with a party that included a goblin.

The point of the videos would be to see how strong a goblin could get if it survived onto the later rounds.

Slam.

The Slime making way its way to Aerin made contact with my shield I braced myself.

The hit was heavier than I had expected. I took a step back. But the slime looked like it was ready to go for another slam.

Aerin took another shot at it.

"Nice, but don't take another shot. It might die."

Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon.

"I don't understand why we have to do this...but okay."

Aerin listened to me, but only because she had to, thanks to some unknown force compelling her to do so.

The slime took off again.

I stepped forward with my shield in front of me.

Slam.

Damn it.

I lost my balance and fell on my butt.

If I didn't get up now, Aerin would have to shoot the slime, possibly killing it off. Smack.

Gob had finished off the last of the two slimes and made his way over to where we were.

He attacked the Slime from behind and killed it off.

"Thank you, Gob."

"Boss is the boss."

Gob and I looked towards the portal, looking for new slimes making their way through the platform.

There were a few.

Some of them had burn marks. Most likely a result of Alex's black magic.

Some of them looked weaker and slower as if they had less life energy. A result of Lili's debuffs.

"Gob, go attack the one in the middle! Take last one when it gets to you. Everyone will support you. Aerin and I will fight off the one in the lead!"

"Got it boss."

Aerin sighed in frustration.

※※※

30 minutes later.

My tailbone hurt. My back hurt. My arms hurt.

The adrenaline was wearing off.

The slimes were tougher than I expected.

Or maybe it was that my strength was too low.

I let Gob kill off most of those slimes because one, he was stronger than us at level 1 and two, he would grow faster than us.

Did it pay off?

Aerin was recovering and collecting arrows from enemies and off the ground.

She had scrapes on her right arm. She had been blindsided by a slime while covering for me and had rolled on the ground.

She looked frustrated. She was constantly questioning why we were fighting this way.

I had done a poor job of explaining to my team why we were doing what we were doing.

Sure, they had an unexplainable urge to follow my orders. But would we make it with frustrated party members in doubt?

Alex was getting rid of slime bits from his nails when the generation of new slimes got faster than the rate at which Gob killed them off.

Alex couldn't just use the spell that caused slow burn damage. As a vampire he could attack with his nails and, with each, attack recover some health as if he were siphoning their blood.

It didn't make sense since slimes didn't spill blood when they were cut, but this was a video game. Or rather the world behind a video game.

That ability of vampires applied to monsters who didn't bleed.

This attack was mainly a gimmick to help vampire survive earlier around when their magic was not strong and their health was very low.

Lili and Iris seemed relatively okay.

Lili was talking to Iris, shuffling around trying to get a good look at iris's face. I didn't know what she was saying, but Iris seemed flustered.

I guess you can't expect a priestess to welcome a succubus with open arms.

As I sighed in relief, the portal lit up again.

"More slimes?"

Alex seemed from annoyed but ready to go.

It wasn't another slime.

It was the "angel," Clare.
