Chapter 2. Family

Chapter 2. Family

About halfway back to the hovel, Naurius collapsed from a combination of exhaustion and pain. His mother couldn't carry him so she called for his father in a not so elegant way.

“Beck, get your ass over here! Our son needs to be carried back to the house and so help me gods, if you make me carry him by myself I will ensure that we do not have a second child. I’ll also make sure it fuckin hurts!”

Hearing this a male from the crowd with long, jet black hair made his way through the crowd. He was tall and stood out amongst the rest of the crowd, with a pair of firm blue eyes and rather thick eyebrows making him look stern. He had a rounded face with sharp features and a small but thick beard growing. Not only was he tall, but he also had broad shoulders with large muscles clearly visible even under his sleeves. He was clearly a hard worker who wasn't afraid to roll up his sleeves and get a job done if need be. However, this large, firm-looking man was hunched over seemingly trying to hide, looking meek like a mouse in front of his wife.

He hushed her gently and did his best to calm her down, much to the amusement of the townsfolk, afraid she would get angrier. He gently picked Naurius up and carried him back to their hovel where he had to duck to get through the door. He cursed his luck of growing to be 192 centimeters tall, he never wanted to stand out, he was always the shy kid! He sat Naurius down on his bed and looked worriedly at his son, he had seen the whole series of events. His son seemed to get some sort of odd combination of their features, his personality seemed rather lazy, a direct result of his fathers' shyness he knew. His father despite his imposing figure was as gentle as a snowflake.

The large man would never even threaten or give consequence to his son for not doing his chores and would instead cover for Naurius. His mother, on the other hand, would absolutely punish either of them if they didn't do what they were told. This led Naurius to always do his work when others were watching, the second they looked away though he would immediately laze off. He would even come up with excuses about why he sometimes broke tools and claimed a hard piece of wood hitting the axe wrong or a large rock chipping the shovel. This stopped when his mother saved up for ages to get an enchanted axe to make it easier to chop wood.

Of course, Naurius broke that too in order to try and get out of chores. However, all that got him was a beating on his backside. After that happened the breaking of tools completely stopped and no more “accidents” happened. However his father was completely baffled by his son's uncanny good looks, he didn’t have those, and neither did his mother. If it weren't for the facts that one. His wife would sooner take her own life before cheating and two. His son’s frame was looking more and more like his own, he might suspect it wasn't his son. While he was lost in these thoughts of his, Naurius’s mother came up and put a hand on Beck’s shoulder. she spoke up smiling at the two of them looked down at their child.

“Ah, Rachel, we really did raise a gifted boy, didn't we? He is clumsy and a little lazy at times but I’m sure it will fade with age. He even got a legendary class, it really feels good being his parents. The time flew by so fast, 12 years old already, it feels like just the other day you and I got married. Still, I don’t mind losing the time at all if we can give it to our little miracle.”

She looked up at him smiling and pulled him down to her height giving him a kiss on the lips and then telling him.

“You are exactly right darling, I do wish at times you would be more assertive with him. But I married you because that shyness makes you adorable and even past that I still remember what happened when you lost your temper for my sake. I think Andrew is probably still in that wheelchair, if he knew how you got when anyone touched me I’m sure he never would have even dreamed of knocking me to the ground like that. I do see it a little in Naurius, a small flame in his eyes that has yet to be ignited. He just needs the right kindling. What do you think Beck? Should we let him go out to learn and grow his abilities? I want to keep him here even if only a single day longer.”

“We can't keep him here forever my love, let him go grow and learn. It’s not as if we are losing him forever, just six years until his education is over. Even then do you really think he won't write all the time and visit whenever he possibly can? He might be slightly lazy but when push comes to shove if he thinks it's important he gets it done no matter what. You should have seen him when he was nine and I told him we didn’t have any meat for dinner. He grabbed a bow without hesitation and went into the woods without looking back. I tried to stop him but he refused to be stopped, that little flame you see I think it lit up that day. He came back two hours later dragging a large several hundred-pound deer behind him. So let's send him out to spread his wings and grow.”

Hearing that Rachel leaned into him and wrapped her arms around his chest hugging him tightly. He gently put his arms around her too careful not to use too much strength. This was an emotional and turbulent but proud moment for both of them. After they hugged the two of them left the room and silently agreed on something. Naurius’s father grabbed a bow and went out into the woods on a mission to hunt the animal whose meat his son loved the most. The swift deer was incredibly hard to hunt but he was determined. Meanwhile, his mother went back out into the village and went around asking everyone for various ingredients. She planned to make her son a celebratory cake, she even got the expensive vanilla she had saved for years just for an occasion like this.

Meanwhile, their son was fast asleep on his bed, he was dreaming about many various things. He dreamed of gleaming cities of glass and metal. Of large metal veins where energetic blood flowed to bring life to wondrous lights and sounds. He dreamed of numbers and strange sentences, that made little sense to him at first, arranged in dozens of ways. He dreamed of what looked like cutting-edge alchemy labs and of tables laid out with paper and designs for a myriad of things. He dreamed of diverting rivers and molding massive areas of land to his whims. Oceans were pushed to give him more land, mountains were broken down and refined into materials to build new cities and homes. He dreamed of so many different things all related to his “chosen” profession. At the end of his dream, he saw wondrous magic, earth magic molding even granite-like clay.

Water magic making reservoir large enough to supply millions for generations to come! He saw fire magics that could reach unbelievable temperatures with countless colors dancing inside the flames. There was wondrous air magic working with the others to change the very weather. In the end, he zoomed out and saw a massive pair of hands carefully sculpting every single detail of a planet below. The hands dexterously and lovingly adjusted even the smallest detail right down to how the ridges in gravel formed from the wind. This he knew instinctively was the ultimate potential of his class “World Sculptor.”

When he finally woke up several hours later, he wondered if the dream was really related to his class, or whether even getting his class was a dream? He knew of a surefire way to check though, he focused on the center of his forehead and in front of his eyes a gentle blue screen with white letters popped up.

Seeing all of the information he realized he had not in fact simply dreamed everything that happened. At least now his migraine was gone and he had all of the information in his head without any of the pain from before. He let out a breath of relief and got off of his bed, when he stood he felt kind of dizzy and fell back down onto the bed again. He tried again a couple of times, eventually, he was able to get up, and when he did the scent of grilling meat finally hit his nose.

As soon as he smelled it his mouth started to water, he knew it was swift deer meat in an instant. A deer that used wind magic in order to move swiftly, the mana seemed to have some sort of effect on the meat making it delicious. When he walked out following his nose to the overwhelming scent of grilled meat and vegetables, he saw a large three-layer cake on the table. The entire house smelled of vanilla, which he was just now noticing for the first time over the smell of the grilled foods. His mother was putting the finishing touches on the cake, having somehow gotten hold of enough sugar to make frosting! She smiled at him gently and walked outside, calling out to his father.

After she yelled out to him, his father came in with a large plate full of grilled meats and vegetables. Carrots, corn, asparagus, the works! Naurius didn’t even need to be told a word, he jumped into his seat at the table. He even put his napkin into his shirt and properly set out his plates and utensils. His parents both paused and laughed at their son’s antics, they set up the table, and then once everyone was sat down and ready they all rounded up their plates and dug in. Before a minute had even passed Naurius had already cleaned a quarter of his plate off.

After eating so quickly he started to hiccup and was forced to slow down. Now that he had slowed his eating, he was able to share everything in his dreams with his parents. He excitedly told them about every little detail as they asked him questions back and forth. Soon the meal passed and the cake was served. Over the cake, his parents talked with their son about the various happenings of the day, having what they knew was probably their last family meal for a long time yet. Soon the evening passed and everyone went to their own separate beds and fell into a deep sleep with full bellies and hearts.
