Chapter 1: The Unexpected Visit

Chapter 1: The Unexpected Visit

"It's nearly finished!"

She was looking at a sophisticated looking device that she was holding in her hand. For at least two years, she worked on it without skipping a single day. With the many symbols visible on the outer edges, she inspected every edge that she could find, making sure that it was flawless.

She looked at her dog which came to her legs asking for attention by wagging his tail. "Ah you must be volunteering to be the next subject~ Ahem...but sorry this is not for you."

Would this even work on animals? It most likely wouldn't work on other people too, but if it could just work on herself that would be a great start. She could try it with other people as much as she wanted, but first things first, it needs to work perfectly. Safety should always be first, right?

With a broad smile on her face, she continued. "Well, let's try it out."

We have the ability to enter different worlds, did you know that? We do it quite a lot actually, whether we are aware of it or not. Until so far, we never really controlled it...but what if I can change that?

Near a fountain, a girl suddenly appeared almost collapsing on the ground. The people around her were surprised as well, questioning how she just appeared and whether they should help her out or not.

When she came to her senses and started to regain her balance, she quickly looked around her, having no clue what's going on. There was a sign nearby that said "West Mainer". Staring around further the square hoping to grasp the situation without a success, a thought even more disturbing came to her mind. Why can't I remember anything?—

It didn't last long until an alarm started to ring. "Intruder alert! Intruder alert! An unidentified person has infiltrated the city. Please remain calm and evacuate if needed. The Order will arrive soon."

Hearing it startled everyone as if nobody has ever heard it before. It echoed throughout the buildings with a volume loud enough that you would almost cover your ears.  Some of the people around her started running as fast as they could. The others exchanged a few words before they did the same, throwing some quick glances at her as they run. She wondered whether they were running away from her or something.

Near what looked like a gate point, a portal appeared and a man's head popped out of it. The man gazed the area and looked the unknown girl straight in the eyes. "Intruder spotted."

He seemed to be a middle-aged man with a rough looking face, his hair as brown as her own. The rest of his body stepped out of the portal now. He was wearing some kind of uniform which strengthened the dangerous vibe around him. His ice-cold gaze was all it took to petrify the girl from even moving an inch.

"You've got a lot of nerves coming here alone, but I have to give you credits...for being the first to do this kind of thing." He started walking her way now. "So what's your business? What did you come here for?"

What the heck is this man talking about? How should I know!? I hardly remember anything...I think. What do I even know in the first place?  "I-I don't know," is what she eventually said.

Hearing that made the man laugh a little. "So what—? You infiltrate a city without a reason?"

"I-I'm afraid I lost my memory so I...just don't know."

"Memory loss?" The man seemingly surprised by her answer had a troubled face or perhaps an annoyed one. "Hmm...you see, under normal conditions, I would have no problem believing you, but unfortunately that isn't the case here..."

He started to look at a butterfly that was flying above his head. "Ellyia! What do you think?"

Wait...what? Is he talking to a butterfly? As she wondered the possibility, another voice was heard coming from the butterfly's direction. "According to this situation, it remains under section D4-1, Hyu Zefrick."

"Great...which means what now again?" He said impatiently.

"Under no objection, the subject has to be taken in and put in custody until matters are resolved."

His eyes were now turned at the puzzled girl again. "So you've heard it...any objection of following me to the office?"

Having witnessed a weird conversation between a man and butterfly, the girl didn't know what to think anymore. So without giving it much thought, she decided just to go with the flow. "No, no objection..." If anything, they could tell more information that could help her.

"Good. Follow me. Oh and...what's your name?"

A name? She knew it was normal to have one, but frustratingly enough she couldn't tell what it was. "Uhm...sorry I don't know."

"Geez, tough memory loss you have there...well at least you can talk. Okay, Yona No-name. Since you don't know anything, let me Hyu Zefrick, at least welcome you to the city Varyion."

----------------------------------------

"The seven mighty cities all on the brink of destruction, trying to survive every day the disasters caused by the black nature. This path is running to an ending in which extinction is inevitable unless they'll calm the Dark Nature's heart before it's too late."

"Ravendell...hey Ravendell! Wake up old man!"

As the so called old man opened his eyes, he saw an annoyed face with glasses looking at him. She was already completely dressed up in her uniform, even her long black hair was tightened into that complicated knot. Faye is what she's called. She's been recently working for him as a secretary, managing his schedule and other dreadful tasks that Ravendell couldn't bear to deal with anymore.

"Faye...what do you want? I'm tired...let me—"

"I want you to wake up! It's 9:00 AM already! You can't ignore your morning schedule."

Faye opened the curtains so that the light would brighten the dark bedroom. "Geez, Ravendell I really hope you realize the position you're in and take it more seriously."

Ravendell looked Faye in the eyes and smiled. "That's why I have you to remind me."

She gave him a good smack to the head.  "I'm not your babysitter, okay? So...now that you’re awake, dress up and get ready in 3 minutes".

"Yes yes..."

"Rave..." A gentle but clear voice was heard behind Ravendell's ear. A voice he knows all too well.

"Yes, Ellyia?"

"Situation update."

Ravendell put his right hand behind his ear as a blue light started to blink a couple times before it vanished. A few seconds later, a knocking sound was made at the door before a less gentle voice started to come out. "Hyo Ravendell."

Ravendell looked at the door where the knocking sound came from. "Yes come in Wester."

A man walked inside with eyes sharp as an eagle. With his short hair standing up and the same serious look he always had since the day Ravendell knew him, he started talking as soon as he opened the door. "Hyo, this morning we had an intruder—"

"The unknown girl with memory loss right?"

"Y-you knew already?" Wester said with a surprised expression.

"Yes, Ellyia told me. It's certainly big news. I'll make my way to the office as soon as possible. Thanks for the reminder, you may leave now."

"Understood."

With a slightly embarrassed look, Wester left the room and closed the door.

"Can you believe it, Faye? Hah! It's been awhile since something this exciting happened."

"I'm quite surprised yeah...I mean I knew intruders would've been inevitable at some point..." Faye let out a breath of relief before she finished her sentence. "But this situation doesn't seem dangerous, which is a good thing."

Ravendell, now starting at the skies through the window. "You know...I had that same dream again. Even more detailed than before actually."

Faye paused a moment before she started talking. "The one about the legend again? This the third time now."

"Yeah, the legend...I know it always sounds a bit like a fairy tale, but you know...I would like to believe it's true. For some reasons, I think that it might actually happen soon."

"Hmm, why do you think so?"

"It's because of what our last Speaker said."

As Ravendell tried to recall the last dream he had, a rather vague memory appeared of a woman uttering sound out of her mouth until her last sentence could be heard. "Every new event may be an opportunity to solve this mess. Never forget that possibility."

As the memory faded, Ravendell stared at the window again. "A person managed to bypass our defensive barrier, on her own even...I definitely can't miss this case. Faye, let's go!"

"Aye, sir!"

She spread her right arm, as a portal large enough for the both of them to walk in, quickly appeared in front of them. A few seconds passed by when they stepped inside of it and vanished shortly after.
