Chapter 4

The Church of Three Crystals. A new religion born a little over a decade ago, it’s followers are numerous and fanatical. They worshiped a trio of brothers that had fallen into the Chasm and returned with strange and wondrous powers.

Between the powers of the brothers and the number and fanaticism of their worshippers, this church swept through the continent, taking over almost half through conversion, assassination, and all-out war. To most this church was something new and terrifying that upset the established status quo.

But to Abiss, whose memories only went back five years they were simply a fact of life. Perhaps it was because of this that, though he was wary, he still agreed to bring Minima into Deim, the capital of this church.

And so began their travels.

For the first few days of travel they stuck to the main roads, traveling rather openly. If Minima had asked why, Abiss might have explained that he wanted to draw out any enemies she had chasing her out into the open so that he could see what he’s up against. But Minima didn’t ask. And so the two of them traveled in near complete silence.

Finally on the morning of the third day of travel, shortly after they left the inn they stayed at the night before, Abiss decided to try a bit of conversation. “You’re surprisingly quiet.”

“Am I?”

“Normally people ask stupid questions or idly chat about nonsense all day.” Abiss slowed his stride a bit and Minima easily fell in step with him.

“Hmm.” Minima held her chin, tilting her head down in thought. Of course it didn’t matter what directions her blind eyes pointed, her field of vision remained the same with Mimi fluttering around overhead. “What you said implies that silence is weird, but also that questions are stupid and chitchat is nonsense... What’s leftover is deep and intelligent conversation... I guess I can-”

“Silence is fine!” Abiss cut her off.

Minima giggled into her hand, “good. Because if I had to provide deep and intelligent conversation all the way to Deim I’m afraid my brain would have overloaded.”

And so silence descended upon them once more and Abiss was feeling ready to die of boredom. Thankfully, some entertainment delivered itself to him.
