Chapter Two: The Discussion

“Is that blood you are drinking?” Levi excitedly asked the question.

Night Mother gently put down the cup she is holding on and looked in front of her.

‘He’s too laid back. Or rather, he has no etiquette. Clearly no manners too, I could’ve sworn, sophistication was taught in every civilization.’

“Yes it is.” At that reply, Levi’s eyes sparkled.

‘This is getting uncomfortable. I feel like I’m an object for his amusement. Tch… be patient, there are reasons for everything.’

“So, vampires don’t exist in your world?” Night Mother probed Levi, hoping his answer would at least abate her irritation at his behavior.

“Well, Yes, I’m not sure though. I was born when my world’s war decimated every living being on the planet including the planet itself.”

Night Mother’s interest was piqued by his reply.

“If your planet was dead, how come you were alive and well?” Night Mother asked with hope.

“Let’s just say, I am above the humans of my world.”

“ooohhh…. So you’re saying you are more evolved than the humans?”

“I won’t get into specifics but yes, I’m pretty sure I am also above the humans here in this world.”

‘So I see, the world he came from clearly only had humans as the dominant race.’

“So there aren’t any races aside from humans then?”

“Yes, there are no other humanoid races there or non-humanoid races whose smart enough to form civilization.”

“Interesting, so humans there solely dominated your planet yet they still warred with each other even to the point of killing the planet along with their extinction?”

“I think it’s more of a universal rule. Even in this world, if one race dominated, that race would soon fragment from each other and form their own faction and fight each other for dominance.”

Agreeing with Levi, the night mother replied. “You do have a point there.”

“Since you summoned me here and I clearly don’t want to go back to where I came from. I would like to know everything I need to know about this world.” Levi hurriedly said, diverting the questions away from him.

“Well, this world is named Pandora because it is full of monsters. Aside from the higher and middle races, there exists the lower race. There isn’t any difference in power level though among the three races. It’s just words labeled among the races to distinguish themselves and a show of dominance.”

Levi was listening intently and clearly this affected the night mother as she too began to get absorbed in her story.

“The higher races include Dragons, Angels, and Demons. The 3 main races who can fly and as you can guess the middle races are the land walkers. The higher races are into this together, they will never try to mix themselves with us who cannot take to the skies. This is their show of dominance over us, although we are always given a chance to be included among the higher races.”

“So what is this chance they are offering to the middle races? Perhaps exterminate one of the three and take their place? or maybe grow wings ourselves and take to the skies?” Levi said the latter option with a mocking tone.

The Night Mother just stared at him.

After a few minutes of silence, Levi finally got it. “Really!?!?!” he was clearly exasperated.

“Yes, either we take the place of one of the three or grow wings ourselves and add a number to the three.”

“So I’m guessing that the latter option is much harder than the simpler head on approach of the first option?”

“Yes, I could at least say that all of the middle races tried at least once and as you can see, no one has yet to actually win the chance to be included in the higher race.”

“Let me clarify things, you said there are no difference in power between the races right?”

The Night Mother simply nodded to this question.

“The middle races can’t combine their strength to defeat one of the three?”

*nod*

“Is it because of complicated politics? Or is it because of a rule?”

“Both.”

“And even if the Angels and Demons are constantly at war with each other, trying to attack either one of them brings the ire of the other right?”

“Yes, The Demons will conspire with any race to exterminate the Angels, but they cannot be trusted. The Angels on the other hand are too righteous to let a third party intrude upon their personal war.”

“And the dragons are too powerful. Or to say accurately, their powerful beings outnumber ours. If the vampire race has 10 Elder Vampires, the dragon race has most of their race at that level since they were existed first.”

“That’s quite the predicament you have there. So is it correct to assume that there are certain benefits to be labeled under the higher race?”

“That is correct, if one of the middle races gets promoted to the higher race. They would get the support of the other higher races when it comes to settling disputes with other races. And since the current higher races keep to themselves for the most part, meaning it is very unlikely for that promoted race to have any dispute with any of the other higher races. Basically what I’m trying to say is that if you are promoted, that race will be the official bully of the land dwellers.”

Unauthorized use of content: if you find this story on Amazon, report the violation.

“That is a big advantage, so big in fact that I don’t think the other middle race would just let you wage war without getting attacked from all directions.”

“Indeed.” ‘He is surprisingly sharp.’

“So… wings. On that topic, why are the higher races so obsessed with wings?”

“Because it gives them the ability only Gods have, flight. But most of all, wings also signifies power. For a dragon it is different, Dragon’s wing indeed shows how powerful a dragon is, corresponding to their affinity, their wings would be surrounded by that element. Say a fire dragon, his wings would be burning hot. Dragon’s also have horns and scales that also signifies their power. So basically, a fire dragon would look like a literal ‘fire’ dragon. But those are rare; I have only seen a few and hope to never see them again.”

“They must have really scared you huh.. I thought you were the Mother of Vampires? Wouldn’t that make you more powerful than the elders?”

“Sure, but us vampires have our weaknesses, despite our strong points the weakness more than makes up for it, Fire.”

“Oh I see… I completely forgot about that, almost every being have weaknesses. That fire dragon’s weakness would be water or ice.”

“Correct. I’ll get back to that later; let me proceed with the other two. Angels and Demons are the same in shape. Humanoid with wings, the only difference is that Angel’s wings are mostly light in color and demon’s wings are dark in color. There are exceptions though, for example the rebellious angel who defected from the higher race to the lower race, Gladius, has blood red wings. This exception also applies to Demons and Dragons, for demons it’s the same with angels. For dragons, it’s a mix of elements - example, an ice dragon.”

“In any case, the number of wings of an angel and demon also corresponds to their power level, from one pair of wings to three pair of wings.”

“That’s a lot to take in and we’ve only tackled the higher race, we haven’t started on the lower race.” Levi whined.

‘Well this stuff is interesting so I guess its fine.’ Levi encouraged himself.

“Okay then, lets tackle the different race of the middle race.”

“The Middle race has the Vampires, Werewolves, Humans, and Elves.”

Before The Night Mother could continue, Levi interrupted.

“No dwarves!?!?!”

“W-what are those?” The Night Mother stammered due to the suddenness of the interruption.

“You know, little people, stocky, bearded and likes to drink ale?” Levi described with hand gestures.

“Nope, never heard of them.” Night Mother replied a bit too quickly, clearly trying to move on to the discussion.

‘It makes sense though; those guys would be food for the dragons. With their little feet, I doubt if they could outrun them and let’s not forget vampires and werewolves.’ Levi reasoned.

“Okay. So vampires, our power level are determined by our age and the age of our maker. The maker is the one who turned you into one.” Night Mother explained with more life, clearly biased.

As Levi listened, the maker part caught his interest and he asked Night Mother. “You said you were the Mother of all vampires right? So who made you?”

And with a proud smile the Night Mother replied. “You will know soon enough.”

Without giving a chance for Levi to probe more into the subject, The Night Mother continued her story.

“The werewolves, our mortal enemy, are determined by the size of their werewolf form. They are strong being, even in their human form they are strong enough to rival a vampire of equal age. And when they transform, they completely overwhelm the vampire but of course since the werewolves only has their physical gifts, they have none on the magical side apart from their cursed bite and wolf howl. So for a vampire to equally stand against the disgusting beasts, we have to train in both physical attacks and our abilities. Oh and I forgot to mention, all vampires have abilities, some are unique, some are rare. It depends on the bloodline you belong to and your innate skill.”

“So what are your abilities then? Since you are a progenitor, you must have awesome abilities right?”

Levi asked a bit too excitedly.

“hmm let’s see… I will only tell you one of my abilities, it is cloud of bats.” Night Mother replied with pride.

“Wow! So you can transform into a cloud of bats! You can basically fly! AWESOME!”

“Yes, flight, one of the few uses it has.” ‘sigh,, he’s a bit too childish, if he can only focus on the flight use of the ability then it would be a waste.’

“Okay then let’s proceed to the humans, they’re average. Jack of all trade but they have the numbers on their side and they keep on summoning other-worldly heroes. The elves on the other hand keep to themselves, average in numbers but they have high mana talent and they have nature on their side.”

"Now let me get back to what i said before, the weakness of a race is the strong point of the lower race, since it includes everything but the higher and middle race. They have variety on their side. There's really not much to say about the lower race, you'll just have to experience them first hand to know them."

“That’s all I guess, most of the stuff you’ll have to learn on your travels.”

After hearing that last bit, Levi’s excitement soared high and he literally jumped off his seat and excitedly asked. “When can I go adventuring?”

This of course hadn't gone unnoticed and only proved to the Night Mother how immature Levi still is.

‘Well, he is sharp when it matters and he can probably take care of himself when the time comes.’ She thought.
