Skyler sighed as she looked over the city. Thousands of cars filled the roads far below her, gently illuminated by the clusters of lightstone placed between the lines.
To the north, she saw the massive magic tower standing in the inner city, a place completely inaccessible to regular people.
Skyler quickly made her way down the huge clocktower she was in. She could use the ladder within the clocktower for the first half of the way but had to climb down the external wall after that.
When she got down she started strolling toward her residence. She reminisced about how things used to be. It was only three years ago that she helped her parents, trying to lead a revolution against the mages.
It was six years ago she first got involved, she was only twelve at that point but intelligent far beyond her years. Her parents secretly got her involved in their group that was called ‘The Mortal Seekers’, the biggest terrorist organization in recent memory.
It only took about a year for Skyler’s ability to strategize to surpass her parents, she began advising her parents on which places to target next, at what times, and for what purpose.
In the following two years they had many great successes. They managed to take down a large number of factories producing low-grade magical equipment and armed themselves with some of the best guns available.
Skyler knew the mages’ biggest weakness. They were extremely cocky and thought they were above everyone else. High-level mages never guarded factories producing magic equipment because they saw it as a lowly job to be done by mortals, it was only in the final few months a few low-level mages started being assigned to guard the factories.
But Skyler got too cocky, when you have nothing but successes for two years straight anyone would become overconfident. She felt as if they couldn’t be stopped and wanted to show the entire city they weren’t just some terrorist group, they were a true force to be reckoned with. They were rebels.
And so she went and convinced her parents to attack the number one factory for magical items. This massive factory on its own produced nearly forty percent of the magical equipment in the entire city. If it were to be taken down, nobody would doubt their strength.
And so they went and attacked. But due to her repeated successes, Skyler hadn’t done a proper job on the information gathering. She didn’t realize the factory had a visit that very night. A group of high-level mages went over to look at the progress that was being made on a new kind of magic equipment. They were in the middle of their negotiations when the factory got attacked.
It was a bloodbath, the dozen-or-so high-grade mages slaughtered a large number of the terrorist group. After just ten minutes they were forced into a retreat. This would’ve been bad enough since many of their forces had perished on this day, but it wasn’t all. One of the rebels was tracked using a spell they hadn’t detected, they led them right to their doorstep.
The next day Skyler heard her parents had been killed, the front page of the papers talked about how ‘The Mortal Seekers’ had been entirely eradicated. This force numbering a thousand well-armed people had been eradicated within a single night.
In the entire organization, she was the only one left since nobody knew she existed other than her parents. But even then, as the daughter of famous terrorists, she didn’t do all that well.
Whoever recognized her would mock her and it was close to impossible to find a job. Now she worked as an independent photographer for the papers, she didn’t have to give her name to anyone and just had to send the pictures online to get her money.
She sighed as she kept walking along the streets, it had been a couple of weeks since she came across something interesting and she was getting rather low on credits. After another hour of walking, she neared the outskirts of the city. There she purposefully went into the darkest and most dangerous alleyways, even showing some cleavage and hanging her expensive camera in an easier-to-spot area.

A few thugs saw her and seemed to be considering robbing her until they saw her face, which caused them to instantly turn tail and run. Skyler cursed again, it had been months since the previous time thugs tried to rob her.
Even since three years ago, when ‘The Mortal Seekers’ were exterminated she had been looking for a purpose. In all honesty, she didn’t completely believe in her parents’ ideology, the only reason she helped the organization was because it gave her an opponent, a purpose.
After this was over she entered an extremely dark place, going from having nearly every day filled with excitement and danger to having a normal life was unbearable to her.
One of the things she ended up doing was purposefully getting attacked by thugs and fighting against them. In the beginning, she got beat up badly a multitude of times even breaking a few bones, but she quickly got better and better and fighting and it got to the point where the thugs in the southern part of the city all knew who she was. As soon as they saw her they would bail since there were a lot of gangs that had already been embarrassed by having their core members getting beaten up by her.
As for killing her? That would just be looking for death! If you killed someone in a city controlled by mages it pretty much meant you would kill yourself in the process. The mages had a non-tolerance on murder and anyone who committed or ordered this crime would be exterminated. Or well, every mortal that was.
Skyler didn’t chase after them as she also felt it really wasn’t worth it. The last couple of times the excitement coming from fights had mostly dimmed since her opponents either weren’t her match or didn’t try to run at all and simply surrendered.
She once more considered moving out of the city and going to some smaller town where nobody knew her. Shortly after the fall of ‘The Mortal Seekers’ she had awakened magic, which meant she had the qualifications to be treated like a mage.
That being said she never even considered using it in the city, if the daughter of anti-mage terrorists were to awaken magic she might be seen as a threat and be exterminated. She felt like in the smaller towns this wouldn’t be a problem and perhaps she could even learn magic even if she didn’t desire revenge.
She smiled wryly when she thought about what her parents would think about her awakening of magic. They would probably instantly disown her and call her a traitor of their cause.
Pulling herself out of her toxic mind she looked at the buildings around her, she was about to arrive at her apartment. But it wasn’t to be, just as Skyler was about to enter the building a massively loud siren spread throughout the entire district.
‘Shit, it’s the calamity alarm!’
The sirens were extremely loud and completely unmistakable, soon after all the lightstones within the city turned a bright red further confirming the situation.
As people rushed out of the apartment buildings sprinting towards the nearest calamity shelter, Skyler stayed in place, she was indecisive currently. On one hand, calamities were extremely dangerous, and depending on what it was hundreds of thousands could die, but at the same time, she recalled an article she read a few months ago after the previous calamity.
A photographer got an amazing picture of the beast horde that attacked the city on that day, he became rich just for selling that single picture.
Steadying her resolve, Skyler began heading back towards the clocktower she was at earlier. The clocktower had an extremely sturdy base and had survived many calamities already, it was probably one of the safer places to be that wasn’t a calamity shelter, additionally, it had a great view of the city and may allow a good shot of the upcoming calamity.
*WHOOSH*
Before Skyler even managed to separate from the crowd she felt an enormous pressure on her back as a heavy wind came from above them throwing most of the people to the ground.
‘Shit, it’s here.’
Even though Skyler didn’t know which calamity had come, she knew it was here. And the fact it had come so quickly after the alarm sounded was a very bad sign.
*ROOOOAAAAAR*
The beast’s roar was so loud that Skyler’s ears instantly began bleeding even though she tried to plug them with her fingers. Massive blasts of wind came from above again weighing heavily on Skyler’s back and shoulders but unlike the others, she didn’t fall to the ground. A bad premonition came over her as she quickly jumped into an alleyway to the side trying to avoid whatever was coming.
“AAARGH”
The crackling of flames soon overtook the sound of the screams and as Skyler looked back at the road she was in moments ago, she could only see death and destruction. The buildings on the other side of the street had melted alongside the street itself, those caught in the blast had nearly all turned to dust save for a few at the very edge of the attack.
Skyler’s breath slowed as she looked up, then she saw them, five enormous dragons two of which had pillars of white flames being shot towards the city causing death and destruction.
