Chapter 15 - The Cost of Blood

Chapter 15 - The Cost of Blood

As it turned out, from the fierceness of the fight Peluna was able to gain several levels and unlock her class options. The fight had been real and not a training session, so the System must’ve counted it as actual experience for her. She said her chosen class was [Priest of Protection]. This was a support class that fell in the realm of defending and healing her allies, much like she had already been doing. Furthermore, it was a rare status class, giving her ample stat points with each level up. Though he supposed their situation was anything but common, so receiving uncommon classes would at least make more sense. He figured that most people slowly attain levels on the surface or in a dungeon at a normal pace, unlike the pair had done.

Besides getting a class, she was also able to share a couple of the spells she attained. Knowing each other’s abilities would be more than useful if they were going to continue putting their lives in each other’s hands.

*[Area Heal] – Heal all allies within an 8 foot radius of your position for 1/5 of the normal strength of your normal healing strength*

*[Embrace] – Shield an ally with a bubble of protection for 5 seconds. The bubble will be as strong as the magic you have left*

Both of these skills were highly useful in a fight, especially if several people needed healing at once and she couldn’t get to them each directly. The second skill would be a lifesaver as well; it could protect him or others from potentially lethal attacks. Cyrus was having a difficult time giving her any congratulations for getting her class. The way she obtained it was likely to be a sore topic so he chose not to press on the subject.

While she worked with her new class, Cyrus realized this was also a good time for him to work through his notifications. When they left, they were likely to meet danger while pushing for the surface. It would be in his favor to be as prepared as possible for the enemies they would encounter.

*Human – Level 288 killed. Experience awarded*

*Level up to 31! – Free points awarded*

*Level up to 32! – Free points awarded*

*… *

*Level up to 42! – Free points awarded*

*Title: Champion Slayer – Slayed an enemy at least 50 levels higher. +15 strength, +10 constitution*

*Title: Leviathan Slayer – Slayed an enemy at least 100 levels higher. +25 strength, +20 constitution*

*Title: King Slayer – Slayed an enemy at least 200 levels higher. +45 strength, +40 constitution*

Cyrus wasn’t even sure how to react looking at all these stat increases. The titles alone more than doubled, almost tripled those stat areas. The levels from his class also massively increased his worth as well. The levels when you don’t have a class were practically meaningless in comparison. This would explain how Albus had been so easily able to dispatch those giant beasts. Another 140 levels would get you the ridiculous stat points needed to move as quickly and cast such powerful spells.

Stolen novel; please report.

The difference for Cyrus was the titles; odds are these aren’t something that most people obtain. Albus had more than gone easy on him, even if the battle felt like anything but. Plus, Peluna had assisted him the entire fight, without her he wouldn’t have come closer to killing him. For now, it was important that he invested the 84 stat points from his levels as well. Now that he had passed level 30, he gained 5 stat points per level on top of the 2 from his class. With all the gains he acquired from the titles, both his strength and constitution greatly outmatched his dexterity. While unintentional, this was the opposite of his goal as he wanted to have dexterity as his highest stat.

He wouldn’t be able to accomplish that this time though, his intelligence was abysmal and without it his magic would be little more than worthless against higher level enemies. The time in which he could use magic would also greatly increase, as well as his mental fortitude. Cyrus took 50 points and put them into intelligence to start with. Feeling satisfied with that choice, he put 30 of the points into dexterity and the last 4 into luck. His window looked far better than it ever had before.

With all the distribution complete, he closed the window. He really should have been expecting what would happen after the window closed, but he had totally forgotten as he hadn’t leveled like that since the beginning. Cyrus felt as if his whole body was undergoing a metamorphosis, his muscles were becoming leaner and the bones inside his body were steeling over. It was as if more layers of skin were added underneath his flesh to provide walls of tougher defense. The well inside of his body where his magic lay, was dug deeper inside of him. The pit swelled with magical strength and became more potent as well. He knew that if he used his [Void Aura] ability now, it would be stronger than before. If only he could fight Albus the way he was now, maybe it wouldn’t be so one sided.

That was a lie, Cyrus laughed internally to himself at the thought. The robed warrior would send him sprawling regardless of his level the way he was now. He was still 100 or so levels away from becoming any sort of legitimate threat. That kind of thinking could wait for later, for now, he wanted to get the hell out of this dungeon. He figured that he would be able to piggyback Peluna and sprint a great deal of the way past the higher level monsters. Even with these increases, the average level of the monsters down her was around 150, give or take a few levels. He wasn’t quite the match here yet. Closing the stat windows, he went back over to Peluna and waved her down.

She tilted her head while looking at him, as if examining something new. “Wow Cyrus, you must’ve leveled up a lot, I can feel the difference in your aura compared to before.”

“My stats more than tripled, the titles alone from the fight were worth about 150 stat points. I think it’s safe to say that we should get out of here now at our current strength.”

“I agree, I can’t stand to be down here a minute longer.”

The mood was pretty dim between the two, the fight still weighing on their minds even though they knew it had been the right thing to do. There was little point in thinking about it more than they needed to though, it was better to focus on the future in front of them. At least, that’s what Cyrus continues to tell himself.

The pair walked to the edge of the cavern, choosing silence as the walls closed in on them. This would be the final time they were in this place, the memorized the walls, the dim light emitting from the moss on them, the curvature of the hut, the man who lay still inside. That was it; they left the cavern and began their climb to the surface.
