Nineteen

"Alright, I choose Jolteon as my first."

"I choose Tyranitar."

The towering dinosaur eyed the smaller electric pokemon with contempt. It may be old now, but it's never lost to a weak electric type!

The young lady guard shouted, "Grandfather, kick that weaklings butt!"

'So she's his grandaughter...' Jared realized, as he turned back to see the first attacks sent out.

"Tyranitar, earthquake"

"Jolteon, evade for now, and agility"

In theory, an earthquake should easily spell the end for an electric type, so Jared was intensely curious about why Davos wasn't switching out. What would an electric type even do to a ground type?

Gathering ground energy, the towering Tyranitar slammed his foot. In response, the ground was immensely disturbed, and a shockwave of energy seemed to travel through the floor like the waves of an ocean.

Suddenly the agile Jolteon sped up and moved out of range of the attack.

Seeing this, Bannock was somewhat in disbelief. He had seen the Jolteon fight against his son, but when did it get this quick?

"His pokemon was actually fast enough to outrun Tyranitars earthquake?" Muttered the female guard.

Meanwhile, Davos was giving out a new order. "Good, stay at range, and hit his fat ass with a pin missile!"

While feeling an ominous premonition, Bannock responded in kind, "Tyranitar, cut his mobility with a Rock Slide!"

While Tyranitar was gathering energy, murky green energy began to emanate from the spiky cat, and it was much faster. A moment later, a stream of thin green needles shot forth from Jolteons body.

Seeing it was too late, Bannock waved his hand tenaciously from the stands,"Endure it, don't lose focus! You'll hit him harder in return!"

Pelted by the dozen and dozens of little green needles in his face, Tyranitar was losing focus as he protected his eyes.

"Wait, Tyranitar, he's coming, open your eyes and change to bulldoze!"

Jolteon had rushed forth while his pin missiles were in the air!

"Grwarr?"

This wasn't what Bannock or Tyranitar were expecting. Why would Jolteon be coming? Wasn't the order Davos gave to 'stay at range?'

Meanwhile, Davos was laughing, "Too late, Double kick max speed!"

The moment Tyranitar opened his eyes, a flash of yellow exploded in his vision

With his head knocked back, Tyranitar roared in pain. He swung his massive arms to strike back, but he hit nothing but air.

"Double kick again!"

Hearing that, Tyranitar took the initiative to prepare a bulldoze. Turning around, he found the Jolteon wasn't coming back! Just what was going on?

"The times are changing Bannock, and you haven't changed at all."

Feeling stifled, Bannock tried to adapt, "Tyranitar, it's a feint, begin sandstorm instead!"

"Pin missile!"

Spitting out blood, Tyranitar began influencing the surrounding sand with his rock energy!

Starting with him as the epicenter, a cloud of sand spread out!

Despite the obscuration, people were trying their best to not miss anything, but the sand was thick.

"Tyranitar, the pin missile was also a feint, it's coming in again, bulldoze!"

Canceling the sandstorm, Tyranitar prepared to meet the foe with a bulldoze, but then a stream of green needles pelted him in the face.

"RRRAAAAAARRR" Infuriated, Tyranitar began charging toward his small foe, while the sandstorm began dissipating

"Evade, and continue pin missiling!"

Bannock was feeling helpless, "Tyranitar, stop, you won't catch him. Eat his next few attacks while charging up a sand storm fully! Don't react no matter what!"

Hearing his trainer's voice, Tyranitars fury settled, and sand began to bellow forth once more!

"Hahaha, not gonna react? fine with me, Double Kick!"

A moment later, Tyranitar felt a massive blow that threatened to topple him over.

The large green pokemon roared in pain, as he felt the four times super-effective Fighting-type energy corroding his body

Soon half the stadium was covered in thick blowing sand, and nobody could see what was happening.

"Good, Tyranitar, prepare an earthquake!"

But there was only silence.

When the sand settled, the old gym leader shook his head ruefully. Jolteon was standing atop his pokemons unconscious body.

The young woman next to Jared shouted, "How can this happen? Brinock's tyranitar easily defeated Davos's Jolten last time with an earthquake, why didn't it work for grandfather? and how can grandfather just let Tyranitar take all those double-kicks?!"

A guard consoled her, "Jessica, Elder Bannocks Tyranitar is already very old now, and can't react as quickly"

"Hmph, what are you saying Elitock? Do you want grandfather to lose?"

"No..."

Seeing Jessicas rage still directed at him, the clean-shaven Elitock continued, "In normal cases, the threat of earthquake would prevent an electric type from getting in close. This fear would effectively seal double-kick from ever being used. However, this Jolteon is the ace of Davos, while Tyranitar is old and out of shape."

"So?" Jessica stamped her foot.

"Just... forget I said anything..."

"I call Tyranitars defeat, my next pokemon will be Onix!"

As if the conversation never happened, Jessica turned her eyes back and found her grandfather was holding out a new Pokeball.

"Why doesn't he evolve it to a Steelix, isn't Onix a lot weaker?" a nearby man had commented as if watching a sports match.

"Hrmph, what would a commoner like you know?" the red-haired Jessica couldn't help but retort, "Steelix is no longer a rock type, so it wouldn't benefit from Pewter Cities rock-type energy or the rock-type training grounds of my clan!"

The man was about to tell her to mind her business but instead, he bowed upon seeing who was scolding him, "...Oh, of course, sorry elder Jessica..."

Meanwhile, the remaining three guards helplessly tried to plead with Jessica to remember her status, and to stop arguing with random people.

Suddenly a roar shook the field, which drew all eyes.

Taking a good look, Jared was shocked! Of the five or so onix's he has seen so far, this one was at least double the length of the largest one he'd seen. Taking a guess, Jared thought it likely weighed over two tons.

"Jolteon, return!"

Jessica had a pleased smile, "Hmph, what a coward."

Meanwhile, Davos quickly chose his next pokemon, "I choose Kingler as my second!"

The moment Kingler hit the field, Bannock shouted, " Onix, slam"

Seeing this, Davos quickly replied, "Kingler, bubblebeam-like spikes and back off!"

'Bubblebeam-like spikes? What's he talking about?' wondered Jared.

Moving sideways like a crab, Kingler began releasing basketball-sized orb-like blue globules from his mouth one by one. The orbs floated forth in front of the approaching behemoth, and in just a couple of seconds, there were already ten.

Meanwhile, the two-ton snake rumbled forward while gathering rock energy. He came with such force, that his approach was almost enough to knock the eighty-pound crab off his spiky feet.

Onix then met the globules, but he charged straight through! As he neared one, the bubbles would explode like a little grenade, coating the enormous stone snake in blue burns.

Seeing the Onix getting closer despite the globules, Davos commanded, "Kingler, protect!"

Jared then noticed the same brown energy present on the Onix had coated the crab just before the collision! 'Is that the color of protect?'

Roaring angrily, Onix was finally in range! Rearing up his segments for a moment, he then slammed down with all his weight on the tiny eighty-pound crab.

Then there was an enormous boom, Onix had landed right on top of his much smaller opponent!

"Again, Smackdown!"

"Hahaha, you really are old."

"What are you saying Davos?!"

As the dust settled, Onix reared back to slam again, but the pokemons eyes widened to find that the Kingler was not there.

Seeing the opponent had somehow disappeared, Bannock had a flash of realization. "He didn't use protect?"

He then hurried to say, "Onix, he used your slam to hide the dig, earthquake quickly!"

"Once again, it's too late." Davos smugly pointed out.

Erupting right below the massive pokemon a javelin of ground energy struck one of the massive onix's segments.

Roaring, Onix was rocked by the super effective attack, but he actually completed the earthquake despite the pain!

Jessica cheered, "Good!"

Davos felt helpless upon seeing that Onix didn't flinch, "Shit, that Onix is really too big..."

Jutting stones and gravel exploded into the air!

With a boom, the ground itself rejected Kingler. It was as if mother earth was exerting her vengeance and punishing evil!

Blown fifty meters away by the powerful earthquake, Kingler almost reached the arena walls!

Suddenly there was a stern voice, "Everyone get to another side, the battles moved too close!"

From high up in the stands, Jared took note of how fast and orderly the people evacuated to another side of the arena. 'This must be a common occurrence' he reasoned.

Moving his eyes below, he found the Kingler's shell was visibly broken in many places. Blue blood was oozing, and the pokemon had yet to get to his feet.

With a body cracked by fighting energy, and burned by water element, Onix rumbled forward to finish off his foe.

"Kingler you getting up?"

Even as the Onix moved to slam down, Davos found no response.

'How did a water type even get defeated in one hit by a neutral move like an earthquake? Is it a size difference?' wondered Jared.

"I call Kinglers defeat."

Before the attack could land, Davos regretfully returned Kingler to his Pokeball and put it back on his belt. He then pulled out a new Pokeball and whispered something, but nobody but him and the ball could hear it.

Jessica jumped for joy, "See that? Davos isn't the only one with an ace!" meanwhile Jared was beginning to fear a turnaround. If Davos lost this battle, all the plans would be out the window, and he'd be screwed!
