Chapter 5

The rusted ladder creaked ominously under their weight. Ethan's enhanced vision pierced the darkness above, but the shaft seemed to stretch endlessly upward. Each rung tested his trembling muscles, the strange new strength in his body warring with exhaustion and the lingering effects of the poison.

"Steady," Rhea whispered from below. "Your body's still adjusting. Don't push too hard."

He could hear their pursuers converging on their previous position, voices echoing through the tunnels. The hunters were moving in coordinated pairs - military precision mixed with something else, something that made his newly awakened instincts bristle. Vampires, Rhea had called them. The thought should have seemed absurd, but after everything that had happened...

A wave of dizziness hit him halfway up the shaft. His vision blurred, senses suddenly overwhelmed by the confined space. The metal under his fingers felt too sharp, too real. Every scrape of rust against his skin sent shocks through his nervous system.

"Focus on my heartbeat," Rhea's voice anchored him. "Filter everything else out. Your enhanced senses are like new muscles - you need to learn control."

Ethan tried to concentrate on the steady rhythm below him. It was different from a normal heartbeat, he realized. Slower, more measured, with an almost musical quality. Just like everything else about her, it wasn't quite human.

They were nearly at the top when he caught a new scent - fresh air, but tainted with something that made his hackles rise. At the same moment, Rhea tensed.

"Company above," she breathed. "At least three of them. Lilith's people."

"How did they-"

"They're old, experienced. They know these tunnels as well as I do." She shifted her grip on the ladder. "Change of plans. Twenty feet below us, there's a maintenance alcove. We need to-"

The sound of metal groaning cut her off. The ancient ladder's supports were beginning to tear free from the concrete wall. Decades of rust and water damage had weakened the structure more than they'd realized.

"Jump!" Rhea commanded just as the top section gave way.

Ethan let go, twisting in the air as his enhanced reflexes took over. His body moved with impossible speed, grabbing Rhea and pushing off the wall toward the alcove she'd mentioned. They landed hard on the narrow ledge, metal debris clattering into the darkness below.

"Well," a silky voice drifted down from above. "The little wolf learns quickly."

Lilith's face appeared at the top of the shaft, her crimson eyes gleaming in the darkness. Two more figures flanked her, their movements carrying that same predatory grace he'd noticed earlier.

"The old blood runs strong in this one," one of the others observed. "No wonder the military's so desperate to reclaim him."

"Stand aside, Lilith," Rhea's voice carried a dangerous edge. "You know the old laws. He's under my protection now."

"Laws?" Lilith laughed softly. "The world is changing, little guardian. Your kind's authority means less with each passing generation. Besides..." Her gaze fixed on Ethan with disturbing intensity. "He's not just another stray you've found. The military awakened something special in his blood. Something that concerns us all."

Ethan felt the burning in his veins intensify under her stare. Whatever they'd done to him in that facility, whatever they'd awakened, the vampires could sense it. Just as they could probably sense his growing weakness - the poison was still in his system, and the physical strain was taking its toll.

"You're right about one thing," Rhea said, her hand finding something in her jacket. "He is special. Which is why I came prepared."

She pulled out what looked like a small silver sphere. Before Lilith could react, Rhea threw it upward. The device exploded in a blast of searing white light that filled the entire shaft. The vampires recoiled with inhuman shrieks, their shadows writhing against the walls.

"Move!" Rhea grabbed his arm, pulling him toward a previously hidden tunnel entrance in the alcove. "That won't hold them long!"

They sprinted through the new passage, the sounds of pursuit already resuming behind them. But something was different about Ethan's body now. Despite the exhaustion, despite the poison, he found himself moving with increasing surety. His muscles seemed to remember patterns they'd never learned, his senses mapping the darkness with predatory clarity.

"Your wolf blood is getting stronger," Rhea observed as they ran. "The change is accelerating. We need to get you somewhere safe before-"

A violent tremor ran through Ethan's body, dropping him to his knees. The burning in his blood suddenly became an inferno, and he felt something fundamental shifting beneath his skin.

"Too late," Rhea breathed, dropping down beside him. "The first transformation is beginning. And we're not alone."

The sound of footsteps echoed from both directions now. They were trapped, and Ethan's body was betraying him at the worst possible moment. As another spasm racked his frame, he caught his reflection in a puddle of water - his eyes were beginning to glow with an amber light, and his teeth... his teeth were changing.
