Lost and found

“Another has been detected.” He says, adjusting the scope.

“100% positive?” Says another one, in a khaki suit.

They both stand atop a building, hundreds of miles away.

“You dare doubt the scope’s prowess?” Replies the man, toggling one of the many scopes on the mask he wears.

“Then bring him here.”

“Aye.”

The man removes the mask and puts his index fingers to the sides of his head. He closes his eyes and concentrates.

“Three”

“Two”

“One”

It takes a while for his screams to stop. He takes a moment to breathe, and collect his thoughts.

‘I- I was on the plane.. the helicopter, and then it.. blew.’ He thinks

‘Then why am I here now?’

Before he can think any more, he feels himself become lighter.

He’s drifting. He moves through space, like light rays. He blinks, and he finds himself above a decrepit brown building. Before him stand two men, one of them wearing a peculiar mask, the other in a khaki suit.

The one in the khaki suit begins:

“Carson, Terrance Carson. You can call me Terrance. This here is Ezekiel.”

“Zeke.”

The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation.

“Who the fuck are you two?” Jonathan whimpers.

“We’ll let you know that after we confirm that you’re worth knowing it.”

Terrance begins to walk towards Jonathan. He comes eye-to-eye with Jonathan, a nose’s length away. Then he whispers:

“So make me believe that you’re worth it.”

Terrance takes of the suit, and nods towards Zeke. Zeke nods back, and looks at Jonathan.

“Fight Terrance, and show him that you’re made of more than just flesh and blood.”

Before Jonathan could argue, He feels a strong gust of wind hit him. He turns to see a fist coming straight at him. The moment after the fist makes contact, he finds himself in limbo again.

‘The sheer force of that punch. The sheer fucking force’, he thinks.

He takes a moment to realize that he can now process thoughts while in limbo.

He feels a strong gust of wind hit him. He turns to see a fist coming straight at him. He ducks this time.

“Did I hit you?” Terrance asks.

“No…”

“Did I hit you before?”

“Yes.”

Terrance pulls his arm back. He looks at Zeke.

Zeke simply nods.

“What the fuck is going on? What is happening to me?”

Terrance takes a seat.

“You have…. a sort of power. I, for example, have an extreme amount of strength and speed. So fast that dodging my punches are almost impossible, unless you know the exact trajectory of them, so strong that if you don’t dodge them, you’re probably getting cremated the next day. Zeke here is weird, he can do loads of shit with his mind that relate to detecting others with powers like ours.”

Jonathan is as confused as ever.

“Zeke here says that you have a power. One that we’ve never seen. You see, whenever you die, your conscience shifts to another timeline, another universe. Sometimes the universes are identical, like what just happened. That’s very likely to happen, as there are basically an infinite universes with the most insignificant of changes.”

“sometimes?”

“There are times when your whole universe changes. These are very rare, but they do occur.”

“So…”

“Considering the sheer number of infinitesimal choices you make over the span of your life, and the sheer number of people that make those choices…”

“You’re as good as immortal, ey.” Completes Zeke.

“But you’re worth nothing to us, or anyone else in this universe.”

“A power useless to all but you.” Terrance interjects.

Jonathan falls to his knees.

He holds his head in his palms. He runs his hands through his hair.

“So what is going to happen to me?”

Zeke looks at Terrance. Nods towards Jonathan.

“Tell him.”

Terrance sighs.

“Does it hurt when you die?”

“Yeah…”

“Lets just say you’re gonna hurt a lot more from now.”

***

In the dark, the New Legion learns about the inter-universal immortal.
