Rose Harthtorne.
Never had she imagined a happy life full of laughter and joy.
How could she?
With an abusive father and mother, an older brother by 4 years who turn a blind eye over her suffering, it was no surprise to anyone.
She was only 4 years old at the moment her agony began.
Her father had returned home one day in a frantic manner, began hitting her as soon as their eyes met.
She didn’t know why.
She was just four.
The father who never had hurt her before was now gone.
She could only cry.
.
Her family began to fall apart right after that.
The mother started to get beaten as well after that.
Taking out her rampage on her children.
The little girl who always laughed and smiled had vanished without a trace.
Her brother however, was brilliant.
He was always the favorite.
Their parents worshipped the brother, hoping that one day he would make them prosperous.
He managed to escape their fit of pique, and Rose faced torture alone.
It wasn’t long before the police found out about it, however.
The sound of screeching rackets had garnered negative attention from the neighbors.
They reported, accusing the parents of child abuse.
Both her parents were jailed, but Rose felt nothing.
The siblings were separated.
Rose was adopted by a different family.
They never contacted each other after that.
And Rose never wished to.

Rose Winters, who is now 18 years old, sat alone under a lush tree. She opened her lunch box made from love by her mother, only to close it again. She was satiated from breakfast and felt no need to stuff herself. She grew up to be attractive and pretty, rumored to be every guy’s first crush. Due to her cold and distant personality, she made no friends 3 months after she entered college. It’s not like she didn’t want to, but because no one dared to talk to her. People called her “The Cold Beauty” as she never spoke to anyone in college.
Rose yawned, thinking about her next subject.
Communication.
Rose’s least favorite subject.
Sometimes, the college professor would ask his students to be in groups of two- and bond with each other.
Obviously, no one dared to ask Rose to be in his or her group. They want to, but was afraid to make the wrong move. At last, she was always paired with the same lone person and everything went better than she had expected.
Cane Rowens, 19 years old.
He wasn’t easy to speak with, he would always stutter and choke on his own words. Rose had caught him staring at her on several occasions and wondered why. She began to suspect that she was hated by Cane.
This book was originally published on Royal Road. Check it out there for the real experience.
Rose didn’t dislike him though. She always thought his round spectacles were cute and besides, she liked cute things.
She leaned on the tree and stared at the baby blue sky.
She decided to not care about people other than her adopted family.
She was far away from the crowd but she could still hear chatter. She recognized the voices right away.
They belonged to her some of her college mates. She didn’t know their names but she recognized their faces.
They were talking about the amazing Virtual Reality game called Grande Road.
She could make out that they just started to play.
How exciting it was to have friends to play Grande Road with.
Grande Road.
A popular VMMORPG that was released 3 years ago. The realism of the game was amazing, some say that it was even better than the graphics in real life. On Rose’s 16 birthday, her parents gave her an early access to the capsule or rather, the gaming device used to play Grande Road and other Virtual reality games.
Rose was still alone as ever, even in Grande Road.
She started to play it a month after its release so she was definitely one of the veteran players, stronger then most. She was one of the Top 3 Highest Leveled Players and even the early birds looked up to her.
The very first female user to make it to top 10.
In game, she wore a mask. She never revealed her face to anyone. She even bought one as soon as she entered the game. No reason actually, she just liked to hide.
Rose moved nearer towards the voices, hiding behind another tree where she could hear every word they said. She was interested in the conversation.
“I love my class! It’s so easy to play in.”
“Templars are OP to be honest, I wished people would stop choosing Templar as their class.”
“Pffft, says the person who chose it for himself.”
They all broke into a laugh.
“What about you though?” The guy refuted.
“What about me?” Another guy answered.
“You’re a dancer aren’t you?”
“…”
They laughed again, only this time, Rose laughed too.
The group turned around after hearing the giggle they heard.
Rose with her sick moves and slim body managed to blend with the tree fast enough to avoid being seen.
“Did you hear something?”
“Yeah, something like a giggle.”
“A-a—are you sure you he-heard something?”
A girl with a soft voice asked.
“Gee let’s just get out of here, class is about to start.”
Another female voice.
They left together and headed towards the college building.
Phew-
Rose breathed out a sigh of relief.
She then followed them when she heard the bell ring.
