Today was just another day in school. The teacher was on the board going on about quadratic equations. Something I've already learned so at the time I was just daydreaming.
My hobby was to daydream constantly. Stuff like getting into fights and winning, how to use a certain super power, or to insert myself in stories and see what I would do in them.
As such, there were more than a few times I got called out by the teacher for dazing out in space.
"Mr. Tray, care to show us how this equation is done?" Damn. Speak of the devil. Looks like he still hasn't learned.
I got up and went to the board and quickly solved the equation.
"...Thank you Mr. Tray. That is all. Did anyone not get how he solved it?" A couple of hands rose up to show that not everyone got it.
Sigh. We're in our final senior year of high school and the math is exceedingly easy for me. I came from a public school where I took calculus back in my junior year so everything
that we were going over right now was just review to me. When I came here because our family had to move, the highest level math class was pre-calc. The school I'm in right now is a
private school that many rich people went to. Because of school fees I had to get in as a scholarship student in order to lessen the burden on my Dad.
Why not a public school?
This private school that I'm in right now is a famous private school where many leaders of today's current society graduated from. I went here in order to make connections so that
maybe finding a job or using those connections will benefit me later in the future.
"...What a waste." I muttered under my breath. When I got here, my expectations were shot down and brutally murdered. Most of the people here got in due to connections by their family
and even if they weren't directly related to a wealthy family they rode on the coat tails of one. Only a few scholarship students were here in this school but unfortunately none were in
my class.
Class ended and it was time to go home for the day as that was the last period of the day.
"Yo, Kyle, you wanna hang out?" One of the groups that were in the corner called out to me. The one who invited me was James Faraway. He was the son of a wealthy businessman and a nice
guy once you got to know him.
"No thanks. I've got plans today."
"Is that so." He had a disappointed look as if to say 'It can't be helped.' His two friends beside him gave a relieved look.
I can see that look you know. At least make that expression where I can't see it.
Its not like all rich people are jerks. I've genuinely made some friends here but if you ask me which group of friends I like to hang out more with it would undoubtedly be my
public school friends. When it came to James, I found out he liked anime by chance and we got to talk about it once we were safely away from school, his friends, and his family. In this
class, James was the only person who I could talk to.
As expected, that type of stuff is looked down upon here. As for his friends that don't like me, I have no idea why they're hostile to me. If it turns out to be some bullshit like
'I don't like you because your pedigree isn't noble enough' I'm going to scream.
As we said so, an angel-like voice spoke up to our ears.
"My, my. What plans do you have for this evening James?" We looked up and saw Veronica Azar staring at us.
"Nothing much. I was planning to go ahead to the mall and waste time there." Veronica Azar is what you call a school idol. Those existences that you only thought existed in anime or manga.
She had perfect grades, her looks could compete with the women in an international beauty pageant, she has money and her athleticism is top notch. Her musical talent
was said to be overwhelming and anything she did she excelled at in the first try. A perfect existence. But I hated her because...
"Then you won't mind if I join you?" She wedged herself between James and me and completely disregarded my existence. Her personality is rotten. James had a displeased look but
reluctantly allowed her to come along. She smiled a brilliant smile that would make anyone have their hearts skip a beat. Alongside her were her posse that did her every whim and command.
"Our princess is going to the mall! Everyone, lets go the mall!" Not only were the guys getting riled up but also the girls who saw Veronica as the perfect figure. It was obvious
at a glance that she fancied James at a glance but James didn't reciprocate her feelings. Only me and James in the whole class...no the whole school would find ourselves displeased
by going with her anywhere.
"Then I'll see you James."
"Ah. Later Kyle."
Today, my friends from my last school are coming over and I honestly feel happiest when we just sit there and play video games all day and talk about what’s been going on in our lives.
I don't need a fancy life, I just want one where I can be content with what I have.
The next morning happened like any other morning. I woke up, got ready in the bathroom, styled my hair, grabbed my locket, put on my uniform and headed out towards school.
The locket was a memento of my late mother. Opening it up would reveal a picture of my mother and I made sure to carry it around so I wouldn't forget how my mother looked like.
Today was really hot so even though I usually kept it inside my shirt, I took it out so that it wouldn't be covered with my sweat. Like this, I arrived at the classroom before homeroom
was about to start.
Inside I saw James sitting alone at his desk which was unusual so I walked up to him to see what was up.
"Yo, James."
"Yo, Kyle."
"I don't see your friends like I usually do in the morning."
The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings.
"They went with Veronica to her penthouse and stayed the night there."
"You didn't?"
"I made up an excuse and went home by 8:00."
8:00? Ah, last night was the premiere of 'Tank Girls' so he probably went back home early to watch that.
I smirked.
"I see you couldn't help yourself to the 'History Channel."
Knowing what I meant, James also smirked.
"You have no idea, man. All those tanks."
At that point, we couldn't help it anymore and started laughing out loudly.
"And what's so funny?"
We turned to the unexpected voice that sounded displeased and found Veronica there. Not only her, it looked like the rest of the class arrived and were staring at us. The teacher wasn't
here, yet so it seemed like he was running late today.
"its nothing." James quickly looked alarmed.
"You." She then turned to me, the existence that she normally ignores. "Tell me what was so funny."
"Its just an inside joke that you wouldn't get unless you know we were talking about." I immediately has a displeased look at the sudden intrusion of Veronica.
"Try me."
"Hold on. Just why are you so angry?" James saw that her attention was on me so he tried to grab back her attention.
"I am not angry." Veronica quickly replied back without lifting her eyes off from me.
"Thats not what I'm seeing."
"You're imagining it."
"If the princess tells you that you're imagining it then you're imagining it." One of the guys who was constantly besides her spoke up.
"Shut up. This isn't your conversation to butt in." I told the guy off and he fumed after hearing it.
"You can't talk to one of my friends that way." Veronica immediately rebuked my response and changed her stare into a hostile look.
"Arrgh. Why are you so up in my face all of a sudden! You used to just ignore me." Unable to contain my growing rage, I let out what I was thinking.
"It's because you."
"Me?!"
"Yes. You. The reason why James doesn't seem to like me is because you're always with him."
"How the hell did you come up with that conclusion." I asked incredulously.
"Wait, It's not be...."
"Shut it!" Veronica immediately interrupted James and then went back to me. "Its all because of you." She now was tensing her muscles and it looked like she was about ready to pounce me.
"I didn't do shit!"
However, Veronica saw the locket that was normally inside my shirt and quickly snatched it.
"Hmph. Seems like this is important to you."
I was immediately alarmed and frantic. I extended my arm to grab my locket back.
I grabbed onto the broken chains of my locket and tried to pull it back from her. Veronica resisted with all she had. I've never felt closer to punching someone in the face than in the
moment I'm having right now.
"The princess is having trouble! We need to assist her!" Suddenly, all of the class got riled up and was getting ready to jump me. I didn't notice such a thing or care about it. All I
cared about was getting my locket back.
That was when a bright white light shined from the floor. The whole class stopped to see the strange phenomena that was happening beneath their feet. Even Veronica stopped to see the
white glowing light that was steadily getting brighter.
Perhaps the only person who couldn't see that light was me.
Taking advantage of her lapse of concentration, I managed to pull my locket free. A smile appeared on my face.
"Got i..." That was all I managed to get out before I was suddenly unconscious.
It was a white area where nothing could be seen for miles. It was here in this white area where 21 souls could be seen. A heavenly figure descended from out of nowhere to look upon those
21 souls.
"Hmm? So these are the heroes." She looked at each of the souls to figure out what abilities they would best be blessed with. Here a soul was gifted with magic so she casted a blessing
of magic upon that soul. Another soul was suited with strong physical capabilities so she blessed that soul with a body that will never be fatigued. Each and every soul was given
a different blessing. She came upon one soul that she thought was excellent and managed to bless him with both a blessing of magic and physical strength. The next soul that she
happened to perchance unto shocked even her with how perfect it was. With this soul, she managed to give a blessing of unimaginable proportions compared to everyone else. Not only
was it blessed in magic and physical capabilities, but she even managed to bless it with all affinities making that soul have no weaknesses when it came to magic. Finally, she came
upon the last soul.
"This is no good." A look of disappointment was in her eye. Especially after the amazing group of souls that she just inspected, this one was too ordinary. There was
nowhere where this soul really excelled at. She can give a standard blessing of mana or strength but it wouldn't nearly be at the same level as the others. Moreover, she could feel
a lot of hostility coming from this soul.
" To be so near such excellent people, its only natural if feelings of jealousy or inadequacy were to
develop and create hostility. If blessings were given to someone with this much hostility then only bad things can happen."
She passed on the final soul and didn't give any blessings to it.
"With these blessings, let it be known that you are heroes that came to save this world. I give you the title 'Hero' and all the advantages that such a title gives."
With a wave of her hand, those 21 souls disappeared into the world below.
